Welcome to CANCELED, Motherboard’s series of helpful guides on how to stop paying for the subscription services you probably signed up for years ago but don’t use (or feel guilty about using).

Spotify Premium, with more than 100 million subscribers, seems to have it all: no ads, the ability to download music and podcasts on-the-go, and an algorithm that pretty accurately guesses your taste in music.

Spotify works by collecting your data, which is what makes it so good at making customized playlists, but if you’re trying to protect your information, Spotify may not be the move for you. Also, streaming doesn’t benefit artists all that much. For each streamed song on Spotify, artists are paid $0.00397, falling behind Tidal and Apple Music’s per-stream payouts.

And so if you regret subscribing for whatever reason: Whether you don’t want to pay $10 a month to not own any music or you simply forgot to cancel before your free trial was up, here’s how to cancel your Spotify Premium subscription.

Cancelling through the website or desktop app

Unfortunately, you can’t cancel your subscription through the iOS or Android app. You’ll have to crack open your laptop and log on to the website or desktop app.

The process is the same for both.

  • First, sign in to your account and head to your account page. It should look something like this:
  • To the left, there’s a sidebar menu. Click “Subscription”—it will take you to a page showing the type of subscription you have.
  • Scroll a bit and click on “Change or cancel.”
  • Verify that you want to cancel your Spotify Premium account by clicking “Cancel Premium.” Because two times isn’t enough, click “Yes, cancel.”
  • Your account page should now tell you when you’ll be returning to free Spotify.

Cancelling through a different service provider

If you got Spotify Premium through a different company (like through your phone or internet provider), you’re going to have to visit that company’s website to cancel. If you don’t remember who manages your subscription, head back to your account page and click on the subscription menu option on the left.

However, if it’s through your iTunes account, the process is much more complicated. Here are the steps to cancel subscriptions on an iPhone, iPad, or, God forbid, iPod Touch:

  • Tap on Settings, then your name, and scroll down to iTunes & App Store
  • Tap on your Apple ID at the top of the screen and view it. You might have to sign in (hopefully you remember your password!).
  • Scroll down to Subscriptions, click on the Spotify Premium subscription and tap cancel.

Switching to a student discount

Okay, maybe you’re a college student and made the mistake of signing up for regular Spotify Premium. All you have to do is apply for the student discount. After Spotify and SheerID verifies that you’re a student, you’ll start paying $4.99 started the next billing period.

I cancelled Spotify Premium but I’m still being charged

It’s likely that you have multiple Spotify accounts, but just didn’t know it. There are two ways you can check: enter every email you have through Spotify’s password reset page or check Facebook’s apps and websites under settings. Then proceed with the normal cancellation process. Here’s a guide on how to unlink Spotify from your Facebook account, should you so desire.

    How to cancel spotify premium

Is it time to cancel Spotify? Maybe you don’t use it often enough, or you’ve switch to another music streaming service that doesn’t try and force podcasts in your face when you’re trying to listen to some tunes.

Whatever you’re reasoning, you might need to cancel that recurring Spotify Premium susbscription and save yourself the $10 per month. We’ll show you just how to do that in this guide, so keep reading.

    Cancel Spotify Premium

Spotify generally makes this process pretty simple. Since the service is prepaid, you’re not locked into any contracts or anything, but you do want to remember to nix the subscription before your payment date so you don’t get charged any extra after you’ve stopped paying.

    1. The first thing you’ll want to do is log into Spotify’s account page. Don’t remember your password for this? Definitely follow their instructions to reset that first.
    2. Once you’re logged in, you’ll need to scroll down just a bit to see the “Your Plan” section. This will show you exactly what plan you’re on, whether that’s a regular streaming plan, family plan, or anything else that might be offered. Click that box that says “CHANGE PLAN.”
    3. Scroll down to “Spotify Free” and you’ll see a box that says “CANCEL PREMIUM“. You guessed it, that’s what we’re looking for to cancel Spotify Premium. Click that plan and follow through with the confirmation prompts.
    4. Once you get through those prompts, you’re all set. You’ll keep your Premium plan until the end of your billing cycle, but after that it’s back to the free-tier. You can still listen to music, but you will lose some features.

    What does Spotify Premium do?

If you’re on the free version of Spotify, you’re probably already familiar with how the service works. You’ll get ad-supported music, and you can only play music in shuffle mode. That limits your ability to pick and choose specific songs, or listen to albums.

If you are willing to sign up for Premium, you’ll get a few more features.

    • Choose your music, even on mobile
    • No ads
    • Unlimited skips
    • Build a premium library of music
    • Download for offline playback, including on Samsung Galaxy Watch

    How much does Spotify cost?

Spotify has a few different pricing options, and you can pick and choose the best option based on your circumstances.

The free tier is totally ad-supported, and limits some features like higher audio quality.

A regular Spotify Premium account costs $9.99 per month. If you’re wanting to set up a family account, you can do that, too, and save some cash in the process. The family tier is $14.99 and covers up to six accounts, while there’s a discounted Duo plan for two premium accounts that even offers a curated playlist for both listeners. That’s much less than the $9.99 per account on the individual plan, but you’ll obviously have to sign up in a group for these plans.

Lastly, Spotify offers a student plan at a nice discount. For just $4.99 you get all of the benefits of Spotify Premium, plus an ad-supported Hulu account and SHOWTIME. Considering ad-supported Hulu is more than $4.99 by itself, this makes a ton of sense if you’re enrolled in an eligible school.

Unfortunately, Spotify’s HiFi tier is still MIA, so you won’t get lossless streaming on any of these plans (yet).

    You can sign up here.

    What if Spotify didn’t cancel?

If you don’t see the option to cancel Spotify Premium with this guide, that could mean a few things. You might already be on the free plan, so there’s nothing to cancel; additionally, you could be paying for Spotify through another account, like iTunes, PlayStation, or your cell phone carrier.

In those cases, you’ll have to go through the other account to stop paying. In the case of your phone carrier you might not really be able to “cancel” that since it’s just baked in to the bill. Might as well enjoy the music at that point.

    Spotify Alternatives

If you’re looking for something to switch to, there are plenty of other options in the proverbial sea. Everything is priced fairly similarly these days, but different services have key points to help them differentiate.

    YouTube Music

If you’re already invested in Google’s ecosystem, YouTube Music might be a good fit for you. You’ll get pretty much all of the same features as Spotify, but with a huge tie-in to YouTube and all of the music, remixes, and other songs that it offers.

You can also pay for the upper tier that includes ad-free YouTube Premium, which I personally prefer to both Hulu and SHOWTIME.

    Apple Music

For a music collector, or someone that’s not really interested in videos or social playlists, Apple Music has quietly become one of the best streaming options for Android users. It does offer HiFi music streaming in its base $9.99 plan, and still includes tons of custom-made playlists for music discovery.

Want to stop paying for Spotify, or close your account altogether? It’s not as easy as you think.

Spotify is the leading music streaming service, but its Premium membership might not be for everyone. Maybe you have a better deal with Apple Music or Amazon Prime Music. Maybe you don’t want to support Spotify because of the Joe Rogan fiasco . No matter your reason is, if you’re looking to break up with Spotify, the process is a little more complicated than it should be.

You’ll first need to cancel your Spotify Premium plan so that Spotify stops charging your card each week. Once you’ve done that, only then can you delete your entire account, should you wish to.

How to cancel your Spotify Premium account

Just like when you’re signing up for Spotify Premium, you can’t actually cancel your subscription from within the Spotify app itself. You’ll need to use the Spotify website.

Open the browser on your smartphone or computer, and head over to the Spotify Account page . If you’re already logged in to Spotify on the web, click the Profile icon, and choose the “Account” option.

From the Account Overview page, scroll down to the Your Plan section, and click the “Change Plan” button. Scroll through the available plans, and click the “Cancel Premium” button. Next, click the “Yes, Cancel” button to complete the cancellation process.

This move doesn’t delete your Spotify account. Instead, you’ll switch over to the free tier once your current subscription ends. You’ll still have access to all your playlists and saved music, so you’ll be able to move it to another service , if you choose to.

How to permanently delete your Spotify account

If you want to completely delete your Spotify account and data—including along all your playlists, listening history, and recommendations—you can do that from Spotify’s Support page .

The process works in two different ways. If you’re using the free plan, just head over to the Support page and click the “Close Your Account” button to start the process. If you’re a Premium member, you’ll have to contact Spotify customer support (so if you want to avoid time on the phone, it makes sense to switch to the free tier first and wait for your Premium account to expire before proceeding). Go to the Customer Service page, and send them a message that you want to close your account. Spotify will guide you from there.

You can recover a deleted account within seven days (using a link that Spotify will email you). But after those seven days, your account is gone forever.

    How to cancel spotify premium

Spotify Premium is a paid-for service that costs $9.99 a month. As a paid subscription, users are billed every month for the service until it is cancelled.

Cancelling your Spotify subscription takes a minute to navigate and many users have wondered “how do I cancel Spotify Premium?” Below we have listed the various methods for cancellation along with a few benefits of the premium service.

    What Does Spotify Premium Offer?

Before cancelling your subscription to Spotify premium, let’s review the benefits of the service. Although you can still continue to use Spotify Free, the Premium version allows you to make playlists, download songs for offline listening, and skip songs without a limit.

The ability to pick any song you want to play with no ad interruptions is appealing. Premium also offers higher music quality than the free option. If you’re ready for the free version of Spotify read on for detailed instructions to cancel your subscription.

    Spotify Billing Options

It is important to understand how you are being billed for the service to ensure that it is canceled properly. Users of the premium service can set up payments several ways. For direct billing within the application, you can set up with a debit/credit card or through PayPal.

Users of iOS and apple products can setup payment options directly through iTunes. In this scenario the monthly payment is taken by Apple. You will need to cancel your subscription through Apple to stop billing.

If the subscription was obtained as an offer by a different provider, you will need to contact that provider to cancel. If you don’t know who provided the service, log on to your Spotify account page and check the Subscription page.

If you’ve just subscribed to Spotify Premium and are wondering if you can share your account with family and friends, we’ve got the answers you’re searching for.

Spotify is a prominent music streaming service with millions of songs from musicians all over the world, as well as a large library of immersive podcasts covering a wide range of themes.

Spotify has a number of features, including the ability to propose songs based on your own listening habits, lyrics on the screen, and personalised daily and weekly playlists.

    How to cancel spotify premium

Despite the fact that Spotify is free, you will have a restricted experience unless you upgrade to a premium account. Reasons to subscribe to a premium membership include numerous commercial interruptions, the inability to skip songs and lower audio quality without it.

Spotify is an excellent platform for enjoying music and podcasts, and it’s even better when you upgrade to a premium membership. It would be even better if we could share it with our friends and family.

Can A Spotify Premium Account Be Shared?

Unfortunately, it is not permitted to use the same account on more than one device simultaneously. However, there are premium plans that provide better value if you sign up multiple accounts at once.

You’re allowed to use more than one device yourself, of course, but if you open Spotify on your phone while it’s playing on your PC, you’ll be asked which device you want to play the music from, and you cannot play music or podcasts out of both at the same time.

The good news is that if you and somebody else, or even a handful of people would like to sign up for Spotify Premium together, you can select an alternative package that offers greater value.

    Spotify Premium Plans

Depending on how many users want to sign up to Spotify Premium together, there is a selection of premium plans to choose from.

There is also a separate plan available for students which offers half price on the standard premium plan for up to 4 years.

Here are each of Spotify Premium plans that are currently available to choose from:

    • Spotify Premium: $9.99/£9.99 per month – There are no restrictions, and you may download albums and songs to listen to when you’re not connected to the internet. There are no advertisements and you may skip as many times as you like!
    • Spotify Duo: $12.99/£13.99 per month – 2 Premium accounts for two persons living in the same house
    • Spotify Family: $15.99/£16.99 per month – This includes one monthly reduced membership that may be shared by up to six family members. All of the subscription features are available, including unlimited, high-quality streaming access to over 30 million songs.
    • Spotify Student: $4.99/£4.99 per month – If you are a student enrolled in an approved institution or university and above the age of 18, then you qualify for this plan. Premium for Students is available for up to four years.

    Spotify Duo And Spotify Family

Spotify Duo and Spotify Family membership plans offer a cost-effective way to enjoy Spotify ad-free just through sharing a subscription between two or more people.

Spotify’s Premium Family membership can be shared by up to 6 family members in the same household, or a Premium Duo account can be used by just two individuals who also live in the same home.

Multiple people may use the Duo and Family services, which include options for sharing music, playlists, and suggestions. Spotify can even create automatic collaborative playlists that incorporate the favourite tracks from each member of the plan.

Spotify has added a sharing option to provide value to its subscribers, which is a terrific method to entice those who would not otherwise be able to purchase the premium service.

How To Add And Remove Users From Spotify Family

In order to manage people on your Spotify Family account, you’ll need to utilise a web browser. Go to spotify.com/account and choose “Create Account.” To add or remove individuals from your account, go to Manage your family accounts. You may invite someone to an open place by contacting them or sending them a direct link.

Regrettably, you can’t just disable someone’s Spotify Family account access. Instead, you’ll have to invite someone new or make a new invitation link. Then, the previous user’s account will be removed from having access to that particular Premium plan, and their Spotify Premium access will be withdrawn until they sign up again individually or as part of another Duo or Family plan.

How To Accept A Spotify Duo Or Spotify Family Invitation

Spotify has made it easier for invitees to participate in the invitation process.

Depending on how you were invited, you’ll get a link from the person who invited you or an email from Spotify alerting you that you’ve been approved as a Spotify Premium subscriber.

To get started, just click on the link provided. Alternatively, if you were invited through email, you may accept the invitation by clicking the Accept Invitation button inside the email. Sign in or create an account, and then click Redeem to confirm your subscription to the service.

When users accept the invitation, they’ll be asked to prove they’re living at the same address by permitting temporary access to their location on Google Maps. Users may be asked to confirm their address again at random times throughout their Spotify Premium memberships.

Do Spotify Duo and Spotify Family Users Have Their Own Accounts?

You may be sharing a subscription with other people, but the particular account you use will be entirely yours. You’ll have your own username and password to sign in with on your own account.

The only person that has access to all of the accounts on the plan is the primary user that pays the bill. This person will not be able to see your saved songs, podcasts and playlists, though, unless they’re set to public for the world to see.

Whether you’re trying out Spotify and don’t want to be charged after your free trial or you’re done with the streaming music scene, here’s how to cancel your subscription.

How to cancel on iPhone or iPad

Unlike most of the other streaming music services available for iPhone or iPad, Spotify no longer allows you to subscribe or unsubscribe directly via the Spotify app. Instead, you’ll have to do it from the web.

If you happened to sign up for Spotify before the company discontinued subscriptions through Apple and want to cancel your subscription, here’s how:

How to cancel Spotify via the web

You can cancel your Spotify subscription at any time from Spotify’s website. Here’s how.

    Visit Spotify.com.

    Press Change or Cancel.

  • Select the Switch to Free button.
  • Confirm by pressing Yes, Cancel.
  • That’s it! You’ll be automatically returned to Spotify’s ad-supported free service.
