If you recently deactivated your account and are trying to reactivate it, you might need to wait a little while until the deactivation process is complete, which could take up to 24 hours (according to Snapchat).

  • You no longer snap or chat with friends, open snaps or chats from friends, post stories, or view friends’ stories.
  • You want to change your Snapchat username.

The automatic deletion policy is what made Snapchat famous (and popular). If you’re still scared of embarrassing snaps, deactivating or deleting Snapchat may be on your agenda to protect your privacy.

Why Should I Delete Snapchat?

Snapchat is a social media platform that prides itself on privacy. However, many users began to question the platform when they remained silent over the Cambridge Analytica scandal that saw data harvested from millions of Facebook users.

It seemed strange that an app promising superior privacy protocols and data protection wouldn’t capitalize or at least comment on the failure of their competitor. Particularly odd, as Facebook has been copying their most popular features for years.

In April 2019, Snapchat announced a host of new features, the most interesting of which is called App Stories. This allows you to share your content directly from your Snapchat camera to a ‘Story’ of another app.

This poses privacy questions, as Snapchat data is supposed to be temporary. But how can this be the case if it’s accessible to the likes of Facebook and Tinder? What will prevent another Cambridge Analytica fiasco if data is up for grabs after it has left the safety of Snapchat?

This guide will help you restore some of your digital privacy by showing you how to delete your Snapchat account permanently.

Deactivating vs Deleting: What You Need to Know

After you have gone through the process to delete your account, you will have 30 days where your account is deactivated. You should hold onto your username and password during this time in case you change your mind and want to reactivate your account.

Over the 30 days of deactivation, those on your friends list will not be able to interact with you or contact you on Snapchat.

To reactivate your Snapchat account, simply log in with your username and password. You can’t log in to a deactivated account with your email address, or change your password. It should be noted that it may take 24 hours before you can reactivate your deactivated account.

30 days after deactivation, your Snapchat account will be deleted for good, along with your account, settings, Snaps, Story, Chats, and location and device data. Snapchat may retain some personal data in their main user database, for security, legal, or business reasons.

Downloading Your Snapchat Data

Before you delete permanently, you may want to download a copy of your Snapchat data. To do this you will need a verified email address. Follow these simple steps to download your data:

  1. Log in to your personal account at accounts.snapchat.com and click ‘My Data’.
  2. Click the link that says ‘Submit Request’ at the bottom of the page.
  3. An email will be sent to your verified email address with a link when your data is ready to be downloaded.
  4. Click the link to download your data.
  5. Your data will arrive in the form of a ZIP file entitled ‘My Data’.

Snapchat has long made a name for itself among other popular instant messengers. Its biggest draw? Pictures, videos, and stories that you send or receive from contacts are only available for a few seconds and are deleted immediately after viewing. These so-called “snaps” can also be edited with various filters, stickers, and effects. How could you not like the app? Maybe it’s because you aren’t satisfied with its lackluster data protection or because you’ve outgrown their younger target group. Maybe your hoped-for Snapchat fame didn’t work out, and you’ve lost interest in the app.

Depending on the individual case, it may even be sufficient to deactivate your Snapchat account temporarily instead of deleting it completely. We offer detailed, step-by-step instructions for both.

The longer way to delete your Snapchat account is through the menu item “Support” in the app settings.

Unlike other social media platforms, Snapchat does not allow you to temporarily disable your account. The only way you can deactivate your Snapchat account is to go through the deletion process, which gives you 30 days to reactivate your Snapchat account.

If this is a route you want to go down to see if you can live without the social service, then follow our how-to-delete-Snapchat advice below. You could then set a reminder a few days before the 30-day deadline in order to make your final decision as to whether you want to de- or reactivate your account.

Before you decide to delete Snapchat…

Before you delete your Snapchat account you may wish to download your Snapchat data. This is perfectly within your rights and relatively simple to do. In fact, you can choose to do this anytime, not just because you’re on course to delete your account.

Do be aware, for security reasons, you’ll need to have a verified email address to download your data.

You can’t download your Snapchat data via the app, you need to do it via the Snapchat website at accounts.snapchat.com.

Log in. If you don’t log in on the website often, you may get a “Suspicious Login” page appear.

This page will then ask you to prove it’s you by entering a code the site will send you via text message or your registered email address. Follow the process, then on the account homepage you’ll see, click on “My Data.”

The next screen explains what kind of data Snapchat has on file for you. If you scroll to the very bottom of the page you can click on “Submit Request.”

Now you should receive a copy of your Snapchat data as a ZIP file to your verified email address, usually within 24 hours. Do note you need to wait to receive this before you delete your account, otherwise, the ZIP file will not be sent through.

Permanently deactivating and deleting your Snapchat account

As we’ve already explained, the Snapchat deletion process gives you a 30-day cooling-off period which means you can change your mind within that timeframe. To kickstart this process, go to the Snapchat account management screen at accounts.snapchat.com.

From here, look down the page to see the “Delete My Account” option.

Click this, you’ll then see a “Delete Account” page that gives you an insight into the process.

If you’re happy to go ahead, then enter your username and password and hit up that big, yellow “Continue” button.

And that’s it! Your Snapchat account no longer exists to the wider world. Your Snapchat account has now been officially deactivated, which means friends won’t be able to contact you on Snapchat. After 30 days, your account will be permanently deleted.

If you have verified your email address with Snapchat, you will get a confirmation email when that finally happens.

Exercising the right to change your mind and reactivate your Snapchat account

If you do change your mind within the 30-day deactivation period, you can reactivate your Snapchat account. To do this, simply login to Snapchat using your username (not email) and password.

This can sometimes take 24 hours before a deactivated account can be reactivated, if you attempt this within the 24-period, you may see a “Cannot find the user” error message. Wait, then try again.

Can I reactivate my Snapchat account after 30 days?

If you want to get back into your old account, we’re sorry to say it’s impossible. According to a Snapchat spokesperson, a permanently deleted account means all of the account settings, friends, Snaps, Chats, Story, device data, and location data is deleted from the main user database.

If you want to get back on Snapchat in general, you can make an entirely new account – but you won’t be able to use your old username, even if it hasn’t been snatched up. Any previously owned usernames cannot be claimed by new users, according to Snapchat’s spokesperson. And because all that data was deleted, you’d have to manually add back all your friends and remake any content you might have had. So make sure you really want out before you pull the plug!

More Ways to Protect Your Privacy

In addition to deciding to delete Snapchat, you can take other steps to protect your privacy online when using social networks. The first step is awareness, and you should be aware of the following:

  • Even if you manage your privacy settings, there are still privacy concerns “behind the scenes” as Snapchat may be collecting data on users.
  • There is often metadata associated with photos you post, which includes revealing details like the location the photo was taken and the time and date.
  • Understand how your social media applications connect to other apps, and that data sharing may occur across programs.

To protect your privacy while using social networks, you can also do the following:

  • Think before you share: Information shared on social media is publicly visible, so remember it is visible to a large amount of people.
  • Read the privacy policy: Be sure to understand the privacy policy of the social network and adjust your settings accordingly, and be aware of how your data is being collected, used or sold.
  • Adjust your privacy settings: Set your privacy settings within applications to control how your information is shared and what is kept private.

How to delete your snapchat account

Removing your phone number from Snapchat and unlinking it from your account can be very important.

Perhaps you got a new phone number, or you simply don’t want people using your phone number to look you up and find your account.

Whatever the reason, unlinking your phone number from your Snapchat account is a fairly straightforward process, and there are several working ways to do it in 2022. I will go over each of them in this article!

Table of Contents

Can You Remove Your Phone Number From Snapchat?

How to delete your snapchat account

Snapchat doesn’t make it easy to unlink your phone number, which has left some people wondering if it’s even possible at all.

Fortunately, the answer is yes. Removing your phone number from Snapchat comes down to either replacing it with a new phone number, or reassigning the number to a new Snapchat account (which you could promptly forget about, if you want.)

There are also a few other actions you can take if absolutely necessary, that will ensure your phone number is removed.

Let’s now cover each method in detail.

1. Swap It Out With A New Phone Number

The first and easiest method is to swap the phone out with a new phone number.

The new phone number will replace the old one, effectively wiping it out from your account entirely.

You can access the area to change your phone number by doing the following:

  1. Open the Snapchat app.
  2. Click on your Bitmoji icon to pull up your page.
  3. Click the gear settings icon in the top-right corner.
  4. Scroll down to ‘Mobile Number’ and tap on it.
  5. Enter in your new number. You can also disable people finding you with your mobile number in this section.

Note that while you’re in the settings, you may want to temporarily deactivate two-factor authentication, as some users have reported that it may cause issues.

What To Do If You Don’t Have A New Number

Speaking of issues… What are you supposed to do if you don’t have a new phone number to replace it with?

In these instances, you have a number of options, though they are not without their drawbacks.

First of all, you could try using a free texting app (that assigns you a phone number) and try signing up with that. You could also try signing up with a Google Voice number, which is free if you have a Google account.

The problem with this is that there’s no guarantee it will work – Snapchat may block these numbers, or they may have already been registered by another account. Additionally, if you ever lose access to the phone numbers, it can potentially pose a security issue as someone may be able to recover your Snapchat account using the phone number.

Alternatively, you can buy a cheap prepaid phone (such as a Tracfone) and use that phone number to sign up. The cheapest Tracfones run for around $30 and can act as a backup phone if you ever need one.

2. Reassign The Number To A New Account

The next option is to reassign the number to a new Snapchat account. This should remove it from your old one, instead giving it to the new account.

Note that you may need to turn off two-factor authentication in your settings in order for this to work. This is a critical step to ensuring this works correctly, and is the part most people list. Additionally, this method does not seem to work for everyone.

Let’s go over the full steps now:

  1. Open the Snapchat app.
  2. Click on your Bitmoji icon to pull up your page.
  3. Click the gear settings icon in the top-right corner.
  4. Scroll down to ‘Two-Factor Authentication’ and temporarily disable it.
  5. Go back to settings, scroll all the way down to the bottom, and click ‘Log Out’.
  6. Start creating a new Snapchat account and follow all of the on-screen instructions.
  7. When it comes time to enter in a phone number, put in the number on your original account.
  8. Snapchat will send you a text message with a verification code. Put it in to prove ownership of the phone number, and continue the instructions.
  9. Congratulations! The phone number will now be tied to this new account, and not your old one.
  10. Log back into your original account. You can verify that the number has been removed by going back to settings, and visiting the ‘Mobile Number’ section.

If Snapchat refuses to let you make an account because the phone number is ‘already linked to another account’ or it blocks account signup due to ‘suspicious reasons’, this could be caused by a few things.

  • You’ve already created a bunch of accounts with this same phone number.
  • You’re using a VPN or signing up in a location where you don’t usually use Snapchat (such as while traveling in a different country.)
  • You’ve previously had accounts closed for rule violations.
  • You forgot to disable two-factor authentication on the original account.

If Snapchat still isn’t letting you use the phone number for a new account, unfortunately you will need to try one of the other methods.

3. Delete Your Account

This one’s a little bit drastic, and should only be used as a last resort.

If you’re unable to acquire a new phone number to replace your current one with and Snapchat isn’t letting you use the same phone number for a new account, the only way left to remove it is to delete your Snapchat account entirely.

This means you’ll lose all of your contacts, your Snap Score, your streaks, memories, and everything else associated with your Snapchat account.

Therefore, make sure you have backups of everything before you do this, because the information won’t be recoverable. Download a copy of all of your memories if you haven’t done so already, and make sure you’ve saved everyone’s Snapchat users that you want to readd.

Note that for the first 30 days after requesting account deletion, it will simply be deactivated, and the data should be retained. After 30 days have passed, it will be permanently deleted.

Therefore, this is not a decision that should be taken lightly!

Conclusion

Removing your phone number from your Snapchat account is easy, and only takes a few minutes.

While it’s frustrating that Snapchat even requires your phone number at all, in this article I’ve shared a few different working methods to successfully unlink it from your account.

If you have any difficulties, please feel free to let me know using the comment form below, and I will try to investigate.

Perhaps you’re moving on to another platform that has better features and is more popular amongst your friends. Or you’re concerned that third parties might be spying on accounts and you want to remove those embarrassing photos you’ve sent to your loved ones that were supposedly “deleted” after a short while.

What Is Snapchat?

Snapchat is an ingenious invention of a messaging app that allows users to take photos or videos and send it to their friends. Unlike other messaging apps or social media platforms, messages sent on Snapchat aren’t permanent. Once they are viewed, or after a specific time limit, they are automatically removed.

You can download Snapchat on both Android and iOS devices. In 2019, Snapchat boasted 218 million daily users and the number is still growing. The app was built to allow users to experience more spontaneous conversations.

The culture of Snapchat users gravitates towards photos and videos. Texting “hi” to your friends is replaced by sending a quirky photo as a greeting. Need a visual shoutout for the glorious cupcakes you’ve baked? Turn on Snapchat and start sharing.

Like any other messaging platform, since its launch in 2011, Snapchat has evolved by adding features such as lenses and filters, live-chat, and a text messaging option.

In 2016, Snapchat introduced Memories, which allows users to store private snapshots on the app, in an apparent shift from being an exclusive platform for sending temporary photos and videos.

Is Snapchat Safe?

The idea of sending self-destructive photos projects a sense of privacy. In a world where anything you post on social media stays around forever, Snapchat is seen as a beacon of privacy protection.

Yet, is Snapchat as safe as you’ve imagined? Or should you be concerned before you start sending photos on Snapchat?

Snapchat’s privacy policy offers a firm message that it doesn’t store nor make your private messages public.

However, don’t let your guard down when using Snapchat. The photos that you’ve sent can be kept by the recipients. While you’ll get an alert of a snapshot, there are apps that will record the images without you knowing about it.

Snapchat’s employees are also armed with a backend tool called SnapLion. The software allows access to Snapchat’s user data, including saved Snaps. At least one incident of abuse by Snapchat’s employees has been recorded.

In all fairness, Snapchat is enforcing stricter restrictions and control to protect its user’s privacy. However, you’ll need to refrain from sending overly-sensitive photos of yourself over the app, as you can’t be sure who’s spying.

Snapchat bought Bitmoji in 2016 and since that, the app got integrated into almost all places of the Snapchat app. It is not possible to have your own picture inside the ghost icon as your profile picture. Snapchat forces you to have a Bitmoji there or you can have it empty.

The users who didn’t create a Bitmoji avatar can have their usual profile picture. But once the avatar is created, your picture is gone for good. The same goes for Snapcode.

If you are looking to unlink or remove Bitmoji from Snapchat, we’ve got you covered. If you’re in the opposite situation and want to add Bitmoji or wish to use Bitmoji in your snaps then head over to this post about adding and using bitmojis.
