1. Get an eye exam

Many people don’t realize they need vision correction until they’ve been experiencing blurry vision and headaches for months or even years.

The most common cause of blurry vision is a one or a combination of the four main refractive errors: nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia. All four vision conditions can be treated with corrective eyewear that can be prescribed easily after an eye exam with your local eye care specialist.

If you’re already wearing glasses or contact lenses and still experience blurry vision, an outdated eye prescription could be to blame — another simple fix with a visit to your eye doctor. Your eye doctor also will check for any possible issues outside of refractive error.

2. Take frequent screen breaks

Too much uninterrupted screen time can lead to dry eyes and digital eye strain, resulting in temporary blurred vision and difficulty focusing.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology urges abiding by the “20-20-20” rule: For every 20 minutes of screen time, focus your eyes on an object at least 20 feet away, for 20 seconds.

3. Maintain an eye-friendly diet

Vitamin A: Well known for one eye-friendly food: carrots — but it’s also readily available in sweet potatoes and spinach. Additionally, increasing zinc consumption can help with vitamin A absorption.

Vitamin E: You can find vitamin E in whole-grain cereals, certain nuts (like almonds and hazelnuts) and, again, spinach. Increasing selenium in your diet can aid vitamin E absorption.

Other antioxidants: Blueberries, artichokes and “real” dark chocolate with high cocoa content are among the foods rich in antioxidants. Lutein and zeaxanthin are particularly eye-friendly antioxidants, and have been proven to reduce the risk of developing diabetic retinopathy and certain disorders like age-related macular degeneration. Lutein and zeaxanthin are found in many leafy greens.

Omega-3s: These fatty acids can reduce the effects of dry eye, an increasingly common cause of blurry vision. The most beneficial omega-3s, EPA and DHA, are heavily concentrated in coldwater fish like salmon, mackerel, herring and tuna. Eating fish at least twice a week is often recommended to ensure adequate omega-3 intake.

And the best part about eating these eye-friendly foods? They’ll benefit countless other parts of your body, too.

4. Quit smoking

Smoking increases the risk of developing certain vision disorders and even blindness. Also, smokers are twice as predisposed to dry eye syndrome as non-smokers.

According to the New York State Department of Health, smoking sharply increases the odds of developing age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.

5. Get enough sleep

There aren’t many parts of our bodies that don’t function better with more sleep. Our eyes are no exception.

Sleep deprivation can lead to tired, dry eyes and blurred vision. Whereas adequate sleep gives our eyes a much-needed break from having to constantly focus and allows them to stock up on tears and rehydrate.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends a minimum of seven hours of sleep for adults aged 18 to 60, seven to nine hours for adults aged 61 to 64, and seven to eight hours for adults over 64 years old.

6. Drink enough water

Eyes can get dry, scratchy and uncomfortable when they don’t have the water supply to produce enough lubrication, including natural tears. Again, this problem continues to grow as screen use rises.

The National Academy of Sciences sets optimal, daily water intake at around 2.7 liters for women and 3.7 liters for men. This includes combined fluids from either drinks or food. But note that your exact water intake needs depend on factors like age, weight and physical activity.

7. Wear polarized sunglasses during the day

Sunglasses not only protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet waves, polarized shades can temporarily improve your vision.

Wearing polarized sunglasses reduces or eliminates much of the glare associated with sunny days, which in turn keeps you from having to strain your eyes to see clearly. In the right situation, polarized sunglasses’ haze- and reflection-busting capabilities will almost make it seem as if you’ve supercharged your vision.

8. Exercise regularly

Exercise, which is so clearly good for all other aspects of health and well-being, also appears to benefit our eyes.

Research increasingly suggests that physical activity could play a role in the prevention of eye diseases like cataracts, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration. Exercise also can reduce the risk of developing diseases like type 2 diabetes, which can lead to vision-threatening complications down the road.

Specific “eye exercises” however, seem much less beneficial.

Eye exercise programs occupy a nebulous space somewhere between medical science and folk remedy. Most optometrists and ophthalmologists are dismissive of eye exercise programs that promise you can “throw away your glasses” due to lack of scientific proof of their effectiveness.

Instead, focus on proven, healthy eye and lifestyle habits to give yourself the best chance of maintaining clear vision that lasts a lifetime.

The latter is easily done on the computer, but books can be more challenging. If you are struggling to read small text, you may want to invest in a magnifying strip for reading. These magnifiers can be stored easily in books as they are flat, and will enlarge the text for you.

Exercise your Eyes

While diet and other lifestyle choices can help our eyes function at their best and slow down degeneration, you will need to combine these with eye training in order to see improvement in your vision. One of the most well-known exercises for the muscles around the eye is known as ‘palming’. It relieves muscle tension around the eyes. [4]

Exercise #1: Palming Exercise

To perform this exercise, sit or lie on the floor, propping your elbows on a soft surface in front of you. Place your palms over your closed eyelids with your fingers interlinked on your forehead. Try to relax completely so that all you see is blackness. Then visualize a pleasant memory and relax your head and shoulders. This would complete the exercise.

Exercise #2: Pencil Push-Up Exercises

Another exercise is known as the ‘pencil push up’. This exercise involves focusing and refocusing your eyes repeatedly and can help correct double vision. [2] Mark a pencil half way down with a sticker or dot. Focusing on the mark, hold the pencil at arm’s length.

Then slowly bring it towards you in a straight line. Stop when your vision doubles, and focus on something else for a few seconds. Then bring your focus back to the pencil so that you are not seeing double.

Then slowly move the pencil away from you again. Repeat this exercise daily for five to ten minutes. If you are still struggling not to see double, rest your eyes for longer or close them for a few seconds. [2]

There is no ‘Miracle Cure’ for Eyesight

Be aware that there is only so much you can do to improve your eyesight. While diet, adequate rest and eye exercises may be able to help, it is important to visit your eye doctor if you continue to experience problems with your vision.

Many eye diseases and problems cannot be ‘cured’ from home and need treatment. If you have concerns about your eye health, seek advice from a medical professional.

A specialized part of the retina is called the macula – this part of the eye is responsible for central vision, and it is protected by a kind of natural sunscreen to prevent the sensitive vision cells from being damaged by the energy from blue or UV light. This natural sunscreen is made up of a yellowish ‘macular pigment’ – a mixture of three light-absorbing compounds; lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin. Our bodies cannot make these three compounds – in fact they are made by plants to absorb light in order to carry out photosynthesis, by which they capture energy from the sun. So we get them from our diet.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are found commonly in dark green leafy veg such as kale and spinach, and also bell peppers, corn and saffron. Meso-zeaxanthin is generally not found in plants – it is thought to be made in our bodies from lutein (although it is also present in some fish, especially in their skins, so we may be able to take it in in our diet too).

These pigments, once we eat them, appear to be important in our vision and in helping keep the macula healthy.

Recent work, such as that by Professor John Nolan and his team at the Waterford Institute of Technology, south east Ireland, suggests that increasing the levels of these three compounds in our diet can improve our eyesight. So we put this to the test.

But the doctor said something to me that quite frankly pissed me off. She said “Wait till you’re 40, your vision is going to suddenly decline. It happens to everybody”.

I remember walking out of my appointment vowing to find a way to “hack” my natural vision into my 40’s and 50’s.

Before I share with your my top two tips to keep your eyes as healthy as possible in your 40’s, 50’s and beyond, let’s explore what goes wrong.

Presbyopia: Hard to focus on nearby objects

Presbyopia is the slow but gradual loss of your ability to focus on nearby objects. You might notice this loss in vision when you’re trying to read the labels on a supplement bottle or reading a newspaper up close.

It’s quite annoying, but why does it happen to your eyesight?

Your eyes have a lens which changes shape as you shift your focus. The lens relaxes when you look at faraway objects. The lens flexes to help you focus on objects near to you.

As you get older, the lens gradually loses it’s ability to flex, which makes it harder to see nearby objects.

Cataracts: clouding up your eyesight

Cataracts are a condition where the lens of your eye (and your vision) gets cloudy. This causes you to feel as though you are looking at the world through a foggy window.

Cataracts happen because age-related changes causes tissues in the eye to break down. Some experts say that this is the result of oxidative and glycolysis related damage to the eyes.

Sunlight exposure over the years can also cause oxidative damage to your eyes, just like it does to the rest of your body.

Excess glucose in your body attacks cells in your eyes and gums them up (render them useless).

Another challenge with the eyes is that blood flow is not abundant as in other areas of your body, so it’s harder to send help in the form of nutrients to clear out the damage.

As you can see, there are many assaults on your eyesight.

So what’s a solution?

One of the best ways to delay the signs of aging in your eyes is to use an effective antioxidant. L-carnosine can serve as a strong anti-oxidant and anti-glycolysis agent.

You can get N-Acetyl-Carnosine (or NAC) eye drops from your favorite retailer and use them 1-2 times a day for a few months to see a difference. L-Acetyl Carnosine converts to it’s active form, L-Carnosine, in your eyes and helps slow down or even reverse cataract and damage to the lens.

Scientific studies are still ongoing to determine the exact efficacy of NAC drops for eye vision, but I have already started using them to stave off potential aging of my eyes.

Rods and Cones for Night Vision

Your retina is like the sensor on your phone’s camera. It senses the light coming in, converts it to biochemical signals and sends them to your brain through the optic nerve. The brain then converts these signals into images, creating “eyesight”.

It’s quite neat how this all works.

The receptors on your eye lens come in two forms: cones and rods. Cones respond to the wavelengths of light and are responsible for sensing color in the environment. Rods respond to black and white light but they are very sensitive.

You guessed it, during the aging process the rods and cones start to accumulate damage and get less sensitive. This leads to poor vision at night.

So what do you do about it?

An anti-oxidant created in Russia called SKQ1 has shown promise in getting to the rods and cones in your eyes. It can help reverse some of the loss of your night vision.

In scientific studies, this antioxidant has shown to reverse mitochondrial damage in cells very effectively, thus improving eyesight.

The Russian scientists even created eye drops called Visomitin (based on SKQ1), which are widely sold over the counter in Russia.

So how do you get them?

  1. The company behind SKQ1 is doing phase 3 clinical trials in the US right now, so Visomitin should be available at your favorite pharmacy in a few years.
  2. You could purchase Visomitin eye drops from Russian websites online. I just ordered some on eBay.

Repeat this exercise up to 10 times a day.

Eye Exercise #2:

  • Roll your eyes in a clockwise direction for 3-5 seconds.
  • Next, roll your eyes in a counterclockwise direction for 3-5 seconds.

Repeat this exercise 5 times, making sure to blink your eyes in between each round.

3. Fennel

Fennel has been regarded as the herb of sight by the ancient Romans and rightfully so. This superfood is loaded with antioxidants and nutrients which is beneficial for overall eye health. Studies have also shown that fennel can also help slow down cataract progression.

Remedy:

  • Combine 1 cup each of sugar candy (misri), almonds, and fennel.
