What’s the Difference Between Iced Coffee and Cold Brew?

Iced coffee is made from regularly brewed hot coffee that’s chilled and then served over ice.

Cold brew, on the other hand, is made by steeping grounds in room temperature water to create a coffee concentrate that you then need to dilute with water or milk. No heat is used, which means the concentrate has none of the bitter notes in iced coffee. How to Make Iced Coffee

To make iced coffee, you need to do a little planning ahead. We recommend brewing your coffee at least 1 hour (and up to 12 hours) before you want to turn it into iced coffee to give it time to cool down.

1. Brew Coffee

2. Cool the Coffee

Let the brewed coffee sit out until it’s cooled to room temperature. Or, to speed up the chilling process, stash the coffee in the fridge. A third smart make-ahead option? Pour the coffee into ice cube trays and freeze it. When you want to enjoy it, simply let the iced coffee cubes melt in a glass.

3. Serve Cooled Coffee Over Ice

To serve the ice coffee, fill up a glass with ice and pour the cooled ice coffee over it.

4. Customize

Can You Just Add Ice to Coffee to Make Iced Coffee?

You might be wondering: can I simply turn hot coffee into iced coffee by adding ice? Skip that whole step where you wait for the coffee to cool to room temperature? And the answer is yes, but you need to follow the steps below, otherwise you might end up with watery iced coffee.

1. Brew Extra Strong Coffee

Brew your coffee with half the amount of water as you normally do, to make a strong concentrate.

2. Cool to Room Temperature with Ice

Pour the hot coffee into a pitcher or glass that’s filled to the top with ice. As soon as the iced coffee reaches room temperature (test it by sticking a clean finger into it; the ice will look mostly melted at this point), transfer the coffee to a new cup of ice.

How to Make Iced Coffee with Instant Coffee

If you’re looking for a shortcut, you can easily use instant coffee to make iced coffee. This method is also a fast way to make a single serving of iced coffee. Here’s what to do.

1. Brew the Instant Coffee According to Package Instructions

The container will tell you the correct ratio of instant coffee to boiling water. 2 teaspoons instant coffee to 1 cup of boiling water is a safe ratio. Dissolve the instant coffee in the boiling water.

2. Cool the Instant Coffee

Allow the instant coffee to cool to room temperature by letting it sit on the counter, or speed up the process by stashing it in the fridge.

3. Serve Over Ice

Serve the cooled instant coffee over ice with your favorite mix-ins.

How to Make Keurig Iced Coffee

Making iced coffee in a Keurig is as easy as making a cup of hot coffee with K-cup. There are some K-cups sold that are intended for iced coffee, but they aren’t necessary to make a great glass of iced coffee. There are also some Keurig coffee makers that have a setting for iced coffee, but any machine will work. Follow these steps for making iced coffee with a standard K-cup and machine.

My go-to coffee shop order is iced coffee. It gives you a morning energy boost, but with the refreshing quench of an iced beverage. It’s truly the best of both worlds. There’s just one problem – it took me a while before I could replicate coffeehouse-quality iced coffee in my own home.

You see iced coffee, unlike cold brew, is brewed hot. It’s then poured over ice, which can often leave you with a watered down, subpar coffee drink. So how do you avoid this? Use these methods to make full-flavored iced coffee at home.

How to Make Iced Coffee 2 Ways

Use one of these two methods to make fabulous iced coffee using what you have on hand.

1. How to Make Iced Coffee Using Room Temperature Coffee

This is probably the easiest way to make iced coffee, assuming you have the time. All you need to do is brew coffee as you normally would, allow it to cool, and pour it over ice. Let’s break it down here:

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • A tall glass or travel tumbler ($12, Amazon)
  • A long spoon
  • Ice
  • 1 8-ounce cup of coffee (brewed however you would normally)

Instructions:

  1. Brew an 8-ounce cup of coffee using whatever brewing method you prefer.
  2. Allow the coffee to sit out until it reaches room temperature; you can even place it in the fridge once it’s cooled down slightly.
  3. Fill a tall glass or a travel tumbler to the rim with ice.
  4. Pour the room temperature or chilled coffee into the glass. Leave room for cream and sugar if you take it that way.
  5. Add any additional ingredients you like in your coffee (simple syrup is a great way to sweeten up iced coffee), and stir. That’s it! And of course you can’t drink iced coffee without a cute reusable straw ($10, Amazon).

2. How to Make Iced Coffee Using Coffee Ice Cubes

If you really want to make sure your coffee will not be watered down, there’s only one solution: coffee ice cubes! This method takes forethought, but once you have coffee ice cubes on hand you don’t have to wait for the coffee to come to room temperature before you pour it over ice.

Who doesn’t love coffee? Tell me something more fulfilling than having a cup of caffeinated iced beverage? And it tastes even better if it is served to you instead of you brewing it yourself.

However, for something as simple as iced coffee, there has been a lot of discussion on making the best version of it. Some believe preparing Iced coffee is as simple as brewing some coffee and adding ice to it, while for others, it is a never-ending path to perfection.

This community of individuals who believe in doing everything perfectly also agrees to the fact that there is a perfect way to brew your Iced Coffee. As a lover of caffeinated drinks and iced coffee, in particular, I too believe in that ideal recipe to brew iced coffee. I somehow do not find the coffee that I buy or even the ones I make up to the mark. It is at best mediocre and somehow exposes the wrong flavours. It is a fact that cold coffee makes the flavours more prominent than hot coffee.

Over the years, there have been many advocates of perfect iced coffee recipes. While some gave high marks to the process of brewing cold coffee where coarsely grounded coffee is left to steep in room temperature water for many hours before being stained, others had to say that cold water was never a suitable medium for extracting the desired coffee flavours. Instead, it was pointed out that the Japanese method was better because here, highly concentrated coffee was poured directly into the ice, chilling it immediately while diluting the coffee to the right amount.

The best way to brew your iced coffee – The espresso way

You can get a bland taste if you brew your iced coffee with cold water. The problem exists with hot water as well. If you pour hot coffee over ice, it melts the ice and adds too much water to your coffee and makes the mix very dilute. There are chances that the flavour of your drink would get lost. In the Japanese way, since the concentrated coffee is poured on the ice, the water content is appropriate, and also the flavours are retained, making it a more dynamic drink.

The espresso way of preparing iced coffee is, however, the deviation. If you own an espresso machine at home, then the preparation becomes more effortless. The concentrated coffee shots drip directly into your cup containing the ice with few ounces of water to make it the perfect American style iced coffee. This process is simple, but if you need more perfection and have a craving for Italian style of coffee making then an extra effort is required.

Get a cocktail shaker for this process. Pour your coffee shots into the shaker full of ice, seal the shaker, and shake it strenuously till such time your shaker container is cold to touch from the outside. A few seconds is required for the completion of the process. After this, strain the shaken coffee into a glass full of ice. What you would get is a drink that is frothy, full of flavours, and very cold. This is the basic process of preparing an iced coffee. You can customize your iced coffee if you want to have it in some other way. You could also add the syrup before shaking your coffee for that extra sweetness. If you are one of those individuals who prefer iced coffee with milk, consider adding sweetened condensed milk for the flavour of your choice. Garnishing your iced coffee with orange peels or mint sprigs can also be considered for adding that “extra something” to your beverage.

The best iced coffee for you depends on your preference for coffee brewing. For someone who prefers espresso like me, I would always go for the espresso way of brewing iced coffee and then customize it as per my preference. Meanwhile, if you like the pour-over style of coffee making, then the Japanese style of iced coffee preparation is the best suited. However, you can substitute 40 percent of the water to be used in an iced coffee with ice. This would help in having the exact water content in your drink and the chilling effect of iced coffee. Also called cocktail syrup, simple syrup has long been the best way to layer sweetness into drinks. This doesn’t mean making drinks overly sweet—it means adding just enough syrup to put your other ingredients into smoother conversation, to give them ideal balance. Cocktails often have bitter, herbal, floral, fruity, citrusy, smoky, and many other bold flavors that, with some sweetness, can be softened. That said, even the most old-school minimalist will always want a homemade batch of syrup at the ready.

Here’s everything you need to know about this magical cocktail ingredient, plus a few of our favorite ways to make simple syrup for different cocktails.

What Is Simple Syrup?

Simple syrup is a 1:1 solution of white sugar and water. To make classic simple syrup, add 3 cups of sugar to 3 cups of water and simmer over low heat, stirring until no visible trace of sugar remains and the syrup is syrupy. The process takes just a few minutes. Simple syrup is an easy means of dissolving sugar into liquid, and that’s why it beats adding white sugar.

Simple Syrup vs. Sugar

The role of sweetness in cocktails raises a question. If sweetness has such potential, why not create it by adding sugar? The answer is easy: simple syrup is far better at blending into a cocktail.

After half a minute of shaking or even quick stirring, your simple syrup will be integrated, its sweetness dispersed through your drink. Granules of sugar, on the other hand, are much harder to dissolve into a cocktail. Using them, you’re likely to get a graininess here and there, especially near the bottom. With plain sugar, sweetness will be less evenly spread through the drink.

Plain sugar, though, has its place. In some drinks, like a mojito, grains of sugar can give a cocktail rusticity, and a link to how the drink was made before modern mixology. In a pinch, too, adding sugar crystals beats adding no sugar. But having a syrup batch ready to go makes things easier and more fluid—plus you can use your batch of simple syrup in iced coffee, cold brew, or iced tea.

Simple Syrup Substitutes

Moreover, simple syrup is just one cocktail syrup. It’s the most universal, the most neutral. At the stage of making syrup at home, you have a chance to introduce other flavors.

When simmering simple syrup, you can think beyond white sugar. Brown sugar adds richness. Mexican brown sugar, piloncillo, creates notes of molasses perfect for some tiki drinks. You can also add spices like cinnamon and herbs like rosemary to syrups. You can even make syrup by skipping sugar and mixing the water with honey instead.

And instead of using water, you can use other liquids. (You’re probably beginning to sense the possibilities!) Try mixing sugar into leftover white wine. This creates a syrup of stunning nuance. Try it instead with a red wine, even a rosé. Or try making a white-sugar simple syrup with a few pieces of fruit added to the pot or pan, then straining the solids out before bottling. You can even use food that would otherwise go to waste in cocktail syrups. You know the fibrous middle of a pineapple? Sliced thin, it can imbue syrup with gentle tropical flavor. Already-squeezed citrus can flavor syrup the same way.

Make this classic treat at home with our iced coffee recipe. Brew 200ml strong black coffee and let it cool completely. Blend with 50ml milk and a couple of handfuls of ice.

Sweeten with homemade sugar syrup or maple syrup. Feel free to swap traditional milk with oat milk or almond milk.

Whip up a frappé for a tasty coffee shop favourite. Pour 200ml brewed coffee, 50ml milk and a couple of tablespoons of sugar syrup into a blender. Blitz with a handful of ice cubes until foamy and the ice is broken into slush.

Why You Should Make Your Own Iced Coffee

Lately, I’ve perfected my strategy on how to make the perfect iced coffee at home. A major benefit of this is that it has kept me out of the Starbucks drive through, lately. This isn’t a 100% of the time thing, but even before social distancing, I was trying to reduce my dependence on Starbucks for my coffee fix. I found that I was often going to Starbucks out of habit, not because I was actually wanting to go. It’s one thing to spend money on a store-bought coffee when you really want it, but it began to feel wasteful (even if I brought my own reusable cup). So, I’ve been ramping up my at-home coffee production for the perfect iced coffee.

Can You Just Add Ice to Coffee?

Theoretically…yes. This is not my preferred method, as I find it generally waters down the coffee too much and depletes the flavor.

There are different strategies out there to avoid this problem. However, I prefer to batch the coffee ahead of time and skip this issue all together.

What You Need to Make the Perfect Iced Coffee

Iced coffee is simple. You really only need ground coffee beans, a coffee maker, filters, and some kind of carafe to chill the brew in.

Why Cafe Bustelo is my Coffee of Choice for Iced Coffee

My personal favorite coffee for iced coffee is Cafe Bustelo ground espresso. Cafe Bustelo is a rich, dark, strong coffee, which makes it work well for iced coffee. Plus, it’s super affordable. Most of the time, I can find it at the grocery store or on Amazon for under $2.50 for a vacuum-packed brick.

Alternatively, Starbucks has some great options for at home. If you like stronger coffees, this whole-bean set – including Starbucks’ Caffe Verona, French Roast, and Sumatra blends – is pretty great. If you prefer something a bit less intense, this medium roast variety pack looks great. I sometimes switch away from my favorite Cafe Bustelo for a seasonal Starbucks blend.

Simple Drip Coffee Makers do the Trick for the Perfect Iced Coffee

As for a coffee maker, you don’t need anything fancy. As much as I want to invest in a fancy espresso maker, I do like using my Mr. Coffee 12-Cup Coffee Maker for iced coffee. If you’re planning to make larger batches of iced coffee, like I do, definitely go with one of the larger pots, though, as opposed to the mini coffee makers.

Mason Jars are Simply the Perfect Canisters for Make-Ahead Iced Coffee

To chill the coffee, I simply use three-cup glass mason jars. I’ll typically brew 10 cups at a time, according to the coffee maker’s metrics; this fills two of the three-cup mason jars at a time.

Measurements for the Perfect Iced Coffee

Typically, when I make iced coffee for the next few days, I’ll brew 10 to 12 cups, according to the coffee maker carafe, at night before I go to bed.

For 10 coffee maker cups, I use 10 tablespoons of ground coffee. Simple enough.

Like I said, 10 coffee maker cups fills two of the mason jars I use.

Before pouring the coffee in, I add a handful of ice cubes to each jar — probably five or six each. If you want to retain the full strength of the coffee, skip this step. However, the little bit of ice doesn’t water it down too much.

Lastly, let the coffee chill in the refrigerator overnight. Then, you’re all set in the morning!

Note: Can use skim milk, 2% milk, whole milk, sugar, artificial sweeteners, syrups. adapt to your liking!

  1. In a large container, mix ground coffee with water. Cover and allow to sit at room temperature twelve hours or overnight.
  2. Line a fine mesh strainer with cheesecloth and set over a pitcher or other container. Pour coffee/water mixture through the strainer, allowing all liquid to run through. Discard grounds.
  3. Place coffee liquid in the fridge and allow to cool. Use as needed.
  4. To make iced coffee, pack a glass full of ice cubes. Fill glass 2/3 full with coffee liquid. Add healthy splash of half-and-half. Add 2-3 tablespoons sweetened condensed milk (can use plain sugar instead) and stir to combine. Taste and adjust half-and-half and/or sweetened condensed milk as needed.

Iced coffee is my life. When I wake up, often around the time party animals on the west coast are just heading home, I start each day not with a cup of freshly brewed hot java, but with a tall, blessed glass of creamy iced coffee in a glass. I’ve been an iced coffee freakazoid for years and years. To say I couldn’t live without it is an understatement. It gives me the tools I need to cope.

Iced coffee is a complicated thing, and there are many different approaches. One would think that one could merely pour brewed coffee into a glass full of ice and call it a day…but I find that method extremely flawed. First, no matter how packed with ice the glass is, once the hot coffee hits, some of the ice is bound to melt. This has two disastrous results:

1. The overall strength of the coffee flavor is diluted.
2. The iced coffee isn’t as cold as it could (or should) be. The finished glass of iced coffee should be frigid, not sorta cold with half-melted ice cubes floating around.

Given the previous set of facts, one would assume that the logical solution would be to brew hot coffee, then transfer the brew to the fridge, allow it to cool, and use it to make iced coffee from there. It’s an okay solution, one I subscribed to for quite awhile…until I picked up an issue of Imbibe Magazine three summers ago. It contained a huge spread on the subject of iced coffee, and suggested the following cold-brew method for creating a sort of iced coffee concentrate. I tried it immediately, have made it this way ever since, and can tell you that there is no better (or simpler) method for having the most delicious iced coffee at your fingertips.

There are reasons this method results in a smoother, richer, more delicious concentrate than simply brewing strong coffee and refrigerating it. I would take the time to explain them to you if I knew what they were. But since I don’t, I’m just going to show you instead.

(Note: I’ve totally adapted/tweaked coffee/water amounts to suit my own tastes. Experiment to find your own perfect ratio.)

I start with a big ol’ container. I love these food storage containers, by the way. I got these at restaurant supply, but Sam’s Club had them last time I was there.

You can use a big bowl, a large pitcher…even a really clean bucket will work if you’re going for a huge quantity. (Or you can halve the original quantity and use a pitcher.)

Rip open a pound of ground coffee. Any kind will do; the stronger and richer the better.

Iced cold brew coffee is the best cure for hot weather! Here’s a simple guide to making cold brew super easily (and timed perfectly for the hot afternoon)

The easiest brewer for cold brew is definitely the French Press! Get the job done & easy to clean up 😚

First thing first, use medium or darker roast coffee for cold brew. Light roast coffees are not as soluble and very difficult to extract with room temperature water. We highly recommend espresso roast coffee for cold brew.

Use 25g of coffee (or more if you prefer stronger brew) & grind slightly finer. The coffee we used in the clip is a medium roast Kenya coffee, so the grind size is pretty fine (about Aeropress grind size) for a sweeter cold brew.

Then pour in 300ml of water & let it steep for 15-18 hours. We started the brew in the afternoon and steep overnight, then filter the next morning & put it in the fridge so that it’s cold in the afternoon 😍

The brew time is very forgiving, you can’t really taste the difference of 1-2 hours. We prefer room temperature for cold brew, it makes a much sweeter coffee!

Lastly, serve with ice & enjoy 😋

Cold brew to pair with milk? Yes absolutely! However, there are a few things to take note.

Use espresso roast coffee, preferably Blends! Blends are specially designed to pair with milk, you’ll get a better body & good complexity to pair with milk!

Also, use MORE coffee, between 1:6 to 1:8 are perfect! There you’ll get a more intense cold brew to pair with milk.

Lastly, always pour milk to taste. You can always add more milk in, but you can’t reverse if you pour too much.

Iced coffee — the cooler and more refreshing relative of your morning cup of joe — is a blessing come summertime. Not only does it provide you with your much needed caffeine fix, but it cools you down during those unbearably hot months. While it sounds deceptively simple to make (just pour coffee over ice, right?), there is an art that’s worth perfecting when it comes to making iced coffee; you wouldn’t want to suffer three months of not-so-good coffee just because it’s served over ice.

There are two schools of thought when it comes to iced coffee, the hot-brewed and the cold-brewed. While they adhere to very different methods, there is one point both agree upon: pouring regular-brewed coffee over ice is nothing short of a travesty. Coffee is a fragile beverage, and it doesn’t sustain extreme change in temperatures well. Often times, this will result in a coffee that is acrid, sour or weak.

So, how do you make a good iced coffee? Well, it depends on your tastes and the way you perceive iced coffee. If you want an iced beverage that tastes like regular coffee, the hot-brewed method will give you that result. If you see iced and regular coffee as two separate entities, you may be a fan of the cold-brew variety. The hot-brewed method will result in a more robust flavor while the cold brew is mellow and naturally sweet.

Hot-Brewed
The hot-brew iced coffee method originated in Japan. Using an old-fashioned (and now very much in style) pour over, the coffee is brewed directly onto ice so that it’s instantly cooled. The idea behind this method is that hot water coaxes out the natural acidity and delicate floral flavors and since it’s immediately chilled, it doesn’t experience a change of flavor when the temperature is altered.

The hot-brew method accounts for a certain amount of ice melt during the brewing process so you don’t have to worry about a watered down cup. For the exact ratios, check out the New York Times recipe. The best coffee bean option for this process is a light, fruity roast.

Cold-Brewed
Cold brew requires a little extra planning, but it’s well worth the wait. It’s mild, smooth and just a tad sweet. While the hot-brewed coffee has gone through a chemical change which affects the flavor of the bean, the cold-brew method “extracts more slowly and selectively” and doesn’t alter or enhance the original flavor profile.

Some people prefer this method because it has a softer and less acidic flavor — approximately 67 percent less acid than hot-brewed coffee. And since it has a milder flavor, a full darker roast is recommended for brewing. Get the cold-brew recipe here.

Once your iced coffee is made, you can alter it to your liking. Milk, cream or even condensed milk lighten its flavor. Add sugar, which is best if using in a simple syrup, to your liking. And if you’re feeling a little fancy, flavored syrups work well here.

When the temperature reached over 30 degrees in my flat one of the best remedies against the heat was drinking ice cold coffee. I tested a few recipes but considering that I only have filtered coffee not all of them tasted great. But in the research process I came up with this recipe that can be made with filtered as well as regular coffee.

All you need is:
– 150 ml fresh (very strong) coffee
– 1 Tsp sugar (or more if you like it sweeter)
– 3 Tbsp hot water
– 1 cup of fresh milk

After you brew the coffee, add the sugar and stir well. Now put it into an ice cube tray and let it freeze completely.

Put the ice cubes into a glas and add the hot water. This will melt some of the coffee to jumpstart the melting process.

Now add the milk to your liking and that’s it. The ice cubes will melt slowly keeping the drink cool and making a more strong coffee.

Enjoy in the afternoon to keep your cool.

This drink is one of my favorite lately and it helped me get through the hot days.

A Little Lesson on Lattes

Before we jump into the instructions on how to make an iced latte, let’s learn a little bit about the drink itself. Having decent foundational knowledge will help you tinker with the recipe and make perfect lattes.

A latte is simply coffee and milk. Known as a cafe latte in Italy, where it was originally made, it directly translates to milk coffee. Big companies have shortened the name to simply latte. While most shops you go to will make a latte with espresso, the name suggests that you can use any type of coffee or coffee extraction. Lattes are also typically prepared with steamed milk for a couple of reasons: mouthfeel and flavor. The steamed milk adds a creamy texture to the drink when properly steamed. It also stretches the milk, releasing sugar enzymes and effectively sweetening the drink.

For an iced drink, we won’t be steaming the milk because the iced latte has a feel all its own. It could also be a bit of a health risk, as there’s a small risk that steamed milk could grow unhealthy bacteria when introduced to the ice.

Now that we know all this, we can see that the iced latte is a pretty simple drink. The most important part is the coffee itself, as everything else is added after the coffee is brewed. So, let’s make an iced latte!

How to Make an Iced Latte at Home:

Making an iced latte is a fairly easy project, so we’ll only need:

Savoring that crackling sound of freshly brewed tea being poured over ice is a daily tradition here in the South, and the luckiest iced-tea drinkers have at least one person in the family who makes “the best iced tea.” But what does “the best iced tea” even mean?

Well, it’s clear (not cloudy), smooth tasting (not overly bitter), at the perfect brewing strength (not too strong and not too weak) and, if desired, flavored with something citrus and/or something sweet. And while making iced tea is a pretty simple process, there are still a few things to know about before you brew, so your tea turns out perfect, every time.

Be picky about your tea.

High-quality tea that’s specially blended for iced tea is your best option. Luzianne ® Iced Tea contains orange pekoe black tea, which is the preferred tea type for the classic Southern iced tea we’re talking about in this article.

Use good quality, “soft” spring water or filtered water.

Tap water is often “hard,” with minerals that can cause the tannins and oils in the tea to separate out, which could make iced tea cloudy, especially after it’s chilled.

The temperature at which you steep the tea does make a difference! Steeping tea in water that’s still boiling will get you some bitter tea. Black “iced tea” tea, like our orange pekoe blend, is best steeped at 200-212 degrees Fahrenheit.

Watch the clock. (Don’t let the tea steep too long.)

Check your package instructions, but typically 3 to 5 minutes of steeping should be enough for any black tea being used to make iced tea. Beyond that, you’ll lose some of that delicate tea flavor and will be getting into bitter tea territory.

Add sweeteners while tea is still warm.

If you want real, bona fide Sweet Tea, that’s how it has to be. Sugar, honey and other sweeteners (and subtle flavor additions such as orange or lemon zest) dissolve and disperse evenly when you add them to warm tea.

Cool to room temperature before refrigerating.

Putting hot tea straight in the fridge is another surefire way to end up with cloudy tea. For best results, refrigerate within one hour.

Coffee that’s been left to go cold usually tastes horrible, yet an iced coffee can be a delicious and refreshing way to stay cool on a hot day. So, what gives? Well, it all depends on the type of coffee you use and how your drink is prepared. Here, I’ll show you how to make iced coffee with Nespresso in a variety of ways.

Iced coffee starts with hot coffee, brewed in the normal way, so the choice of coffee is important. You need one that’s strong, with enough flavour so that when it cools down, you’re left with a tasty drink.

Coffee choice

Low-acid coffee, with strong flavour and a dark, more intense roast is normally the best option. In terms of Nespresso, this may mean picking a type of capsule that you wouldn’t normally consider for a hot drink. For regular Nespresso pods think of the Kazaar, Arpeggio or Ristretto. For the Nespresso Vertuo, Stormio or Odacio are interesting choices.

Ultimately, you can use any coffee you want, but if you don’t get very tasty results with one type of capsule, try a different one. My guide to the best Nespresso Vertuo capsules can help you choose the right flavours for the larger pod machine.

Nespresso has also created its own line of iced coffees, designed specifically for pouring over ice. For the Vertuo line, you can choose between three capsules.

Tropical Coconut Flavour over Ice (230ml, or a mug full) uses a blend of two beans: light-roasted Brazilian Arabica for sweetness, and a darker Ethiopian Arabica for the more intense texture. There’s a hit of coconut and vanilla, too; this smells strong during brewing, but is more mellow and subtle in the final cup.

Ice Forte (230ml) is a regular coffee that uses Indonesian Arabica for that deeper, woody and peppery taste, mixed with a Colombian Arabica to help round out the final cup.

Ice Leggero (80ml, double-espresso) is a more gentle coffee for ice, delivering a smaller amount overall. This uses Peruvian coffee for the deeper, cereal taste, plus Ethiopian to bring a bit of lightness.

For the original Nespresso lineup, there are three new coffees, all designed to be dispensed as a 40ml shot of espresso. Coconut Flavour over Ice is similar in flavour to the Vertuo version. Here, Brazilian mid-roasted beans result in a more mellow finish, with Central American mid-roast beans for a rounded taste, and a final hit of coconut and vanilla for a refreshing drink.

Freddo Delicato, a more gentle iced coffee, has a refreshing and slightly sweet taste, using a combination of Kenyan and Indonesian Java coffee.

Freddo Intenso is a more intense and rich version, using Peruvian coffee (cereal notes) and Indonesian Java to add a bit of sweetness. Both are medium-dark roasted for a bit more bitterness.

How to make Vertuo iced coffee

With a Vertuo machine, you generally get a longer cup of coffee. The dispensed amount can be found on the side of the box and on the underside of the capsule. I recommend going for a glass (not a mug) that’s roughly twice the size of the drink you want, giving room for the liquid and the ice.

Making iced coffee with the Tropical Coconut Flavour over Ice, I started with a 500ml glass. Roughly fill it with ice – you’re looking at around six regular-sized ice cubes (more, if you’re using small ice). Adjust ice and cup size depending on the size of your cup – if you use Vertuo espresso capsules, then check out my advice for making coffee with an original Nespresso machine below.

Next, put the glass under your Vertuo machine (I’m using the Vertuo Next), and insert your chosen capsule into the machine. Tap the button and let the coffee brew as normal, over the ice. Given that there’s a lot of ice in the cup, the hot coffee brews as normal but will cool instantly.

Once the coffee has brewed, you’re ready to drink it. You may want to leave it a few minutes to fully cool. Generally, as the ice floats to the top, you get a warmer section at the bottom of the glass that can take a while to cool.

How to make original Nespresso iced coffee

With original Nespresso, you’re best using espresso capsules (40ml). You need to pour them over ice; I recommend a regular tumbler or an old-fashioned glass for this.

Start with a few ice cubes (three or four should do it, but add more if you’re using particularly small cubes).

Load up your Nespresso machine with your choice of capsule and then pour a shot of espresso over ice. Once finished, your drink should be cold and ready to drink.

You may find that the drink is a bit too intense, but you can adjust the flavour by adding water or cold milk into the glass. Don’t add more than around 90ml of additional liquid, or you’ll just have a rather horrible cup of coffee-flavoured water.

How to use the Nespresso Barista to make iced coffee

My personal favourite way to make iced coffee is with the Nespresso Barista. You can make lots of recipes in this machine, from hot coffee to an iced frappuccino – but it’s the Iced Nitro that I particularly like.

As with the original Nespresso iced coffee above, start by taking three ice cubes (or around 90g of ice) and dropping them into the Barista’s jug. Brew a shot of espresso over the top.

Nespresso says you can add sugar if you want it sweeter, but I prefer using a flavoured syrup (around 15ml should do it) to taste – although I wouldn’t use one with a flavoured Nespresso capsule. Then, top up the water to the maximum level marking.

Select the Iced Nitro option, hit the button and the Barista blends your drink, syrup or sugar, water and ice cubes into a fine drink that you can pour out into a tumbler. You’ll get a thicker, fuller head to your drink that gives your coffee a smoother and more intense flavour.

A thirst-quenching glass of iced tea is a lovely antidote to the summer heat and surprisingly easy to make. Just combine two ingredients—tea and water—using one of our easy-to-brew methods, then tailor each cup by adding sweetener, seasonal herbs, and fruits. Follow these guidelines for an icy and vibrant summer sip.

Start with the Best Tea (and Water)

Unquestionably, tea is the flavor that anchors the drink. High-quality teas work best, so choose the same types you’d gravitate towards when brewing a hot cup for drinking. Any flavor works, and while black iced tea is the one you likely know best, green tea, herbal tea, or fruity teas are all equally delicious chilled. Another option? Opt for a combination, like Martha does in one of her favorite iced teas, which combines lots of Red Zinger with English Breakfast in one pitcher.

Both tea bags or loose leaf tea are suitable for making iced tea. Just make sure to remove the bags or strain the tea before serving. A note on water: It’s important that the water tastes great, too. If you love tap water, go for it. However, to avoid off putting flavors in water that can come through in tea, we generally suggest opting for filtered or spring water.

Pro Tip: If you are brewing a pitcher with multiple tea bags, tie the bags together before adding them to the pitcher so it’s easier to fish them all out at once. The next-level option is to drape a wooden spoon over the top of the pitcher and tie the strings to the spoon, letting the bags hang in the water.

Select a Brew Method

There are three general ways to brew iced tea: hot, cold, and sun. No matter which method you select, iced tea is diluted by melting ice and the cool temperature numbs the flavor on the palate, so iced tea needs to be brewed a bit stronger than hot. To brew iced tea without a recipe, start with these standard ratios. Use two tea bags per cup of water for hot brew and one tea bag per cup of water for the cold and sun teas methods.

How to Make Iced Tea Using a Hot Brew Method

For iced tea that you can drink right away, choose this method. It starts out just like making hot tea, but the difference is that the hot brew will be twice as strong. Steep the tea bags in boiling or almost boiling water for three to five minutes, depending on box recommendations. Strain or remove the tea bag. Add an equal amount of cold water to this hot tea concentrate to cool it down, then serve immediately over ice or chill in the refrigerator until ready to drink.

Pro Tip: To prevent cloudy iced tea, make sure that the hot tea mixture is cooled to room temperature before refrigerating.

How to Make Iced Tea Using a Cold Brew Method

Cold brewing extracts flavors gently from the teas, releasing less tannins which are the more bitter notes in tea. The result is a smooth, refreshing cup of tea that is easy to drink, but requires advanced planning. Combine the tea and water in a pitcher and refrigerating it covered overnight (at least eight hours and no more than 12 hours). Strain or remove the tea bags and serve on ice or keep refrigerated until ready to drink.

On a sunny day, brew your tea using the power of the world’s largest natural energy source, the sun. Combine tea and water in a covered pitcher and place outside or in a window with direct sun for at least six hours. As the sun warms the water the tea slowly releases its flavor. Strain or remove the tea bags and serve on ice or keep refrigerated until ready to drink.

Unsweetened tea is a favorite for some, but others find a touch of sweetener creates an irresistible drink. If you want to sweeten your tea, know that sugar and honey don’t dissolve in cold liquids. Stir them in while the tea mixture is still hot, or make a simple syrup by simmering one part of either with one part water in a saucepan until dissolved, then cool the syrup and stir it directly into already chilled iced tea.   • MY FAVORITE GLASS MUGS: I absolutely love these glass mugs and I use them for both coffee and tea. They’re microwavable and large.
  • TALL GLASSES: I use these for iced tea and iced coffee and any drink where I want to add ice in a tall glass.
  • TALL PLASTIC GLASSES: I also have this set of plastic, non-breakable glasses since we have a pool area and use them outside often in warmer weather. They are dishwasher safe.
  • TALL SPOONS: These are a must if you use the tall glasses!
  • SILICONE ICE CUBE TRAYS: Even if you have an ice maker built-in to your refrigerator, you would totally love these ice cube trays. I love the shape of the cube molds (they look pretty in a glass), and they come out super easy with bendable silicone. You may also choose to make ice cubes out of coffee, so these are perfect for that.
  • COFFEE STIRRER STICKS: We have a little coffee station in our kitchen, and since I don’t always like to get our spoons dirty… these wooden stirrer sticks come in handy.
  • GLASS MEASURING CUP: You might already have one of these in your kitchen, but it’s definitely a must-have (I’m pretty sure I have 3 or 4).
  • RE-USABLE STRAWS: I use these for everything I drink these days. This set comes with a straw cleaner, which is a nice thing to have!
  • MY FAVORITE NO-CALORIE SWEETENER: I just started using this sweetener for tea and coffee, and I’m obsessed with it. No aftertaste!

  2. If using whole beans, grind the beans to a uniform consistency similar to granulated table salt.
  3. Meanwhile, put a filter in the brewer and rinse with hot water. This removes the papery residue on the filter and warms up the brewer, keeping your coffee hot for longer. Discard the water used for rinsing.
  4. Add the grounds to the filter, making sure the surface is level. When the water is between 195°F and 205°F (about a minute after removal from the heat), slowly and steadily pour just enough water over the grounds to saturate them completely, starting from the middle and working your way outward. Stop pouring before the coffee begins to drip through. This is called the “bloom” pour, which allows the coffee to de-gas.
  5. Slowly pour in the remaining water, keeping the water in the dripper between half and three-quarters full. This should take 3 to 4 minutes. Carefully remove the filter, then serve and enjoy.

How to Use a French Press

Caffeinate like a European and make your morning coffee with a French press.

  1. First, bring water to a boil in a kettle.
  2. If using whole beans, grind the beans to a consistency similar to breadcrumbs (coarser than you’d want for pour-over). The grounds should be uniform in size, without a lot of fine grit. Add the grounds to the French press.
  3. When the water is between 195°F and 205°F (about a minute after removal from the heat), add it to the French press and stir it vigorously into the grounds. The brew time is about 4 minutes, then slowly plunge the press, separating the grounds from the coffee.
  4. Serve and enjoy. Note: if you’re not planning on drinking the coffee immediately, do not leave it in the French press, as it will continue to sit on the grounds and become bitter. Instead, pour the coffee into a carafe to enjoy later.

How to Make Drip Coffee

On a hectic morning, nothing beats the simplicity of a drip coffee machine. Depending on your machine, you could make up to 12 cups at a time!

  1. If using whole beans, grind the beans to a uniform consistency similar to regular table salt. Transfer the grounds into a filter-lined filter basket, then place it in the drip machine. Swivel the water spout over the center of the grounds.
  2. Pour clean water into the back of the machine (not over the grounds) and press the on button.
  3. Turn off the machine as soon as the coffee is done brewing (it will stop bubbling) to avoid a burnt taste. Be sure to clean your machine once a month by filtering through a mixture of water and vinegar, which removes any built-up residue.

Tips for Making the Best Coffee

Rule 1: Buy Fresh Beans

Without question, coffee is best when used within days of being roasted. Buying from a local roaster (but you can roast coffee yourself) is the surest way to get the absolute freshest beans. Be wary of buying bulk coffee from supermarket display bins. Oxygen and bright light are the worst flavor busters for roasted beans, so unless the store is conscientious about selling fresh coffee, the storage tubes get coated with coffee oils, which turn rancid. Coffee beans packaged by quality-conscious roasters and sold in sturdy, vacuum-sealed bags are often a better bet.

Rule 2: Keep Coffee Beans Fresh

Always store opened coffee beans in an airtight container. Glass canning jars or ceramic storage crocks with rubber-gasket seals are good choices. Never refrigerate (roasted beans are porous and readily take up moisture and food odors). Flavor experts strongly advise against ever freezing coffee, especially dark roasts. Optimally, buy a five- to seven-day supply of fresh beans at a time and keep them at room temperature.

Rule 3: Choose Good Coffee If It’s Within Your Budget

Snobbism among coffee drinkers can rival that of wine drinkers, but the fact is that an astonishing world of coffee tastes awaits anyone willing to venture beyond mass-marketed commercial brands. Specialty coffees that clearly state the country, region or estate of origin can provide a lifetime of tasting experiences. There are two major beans on the market–Arabica and Robusta. Arabica beans are more widely produced, have a wider range of flavors and are generally considered the “better bean.” By all means, look for 100% pure Arabica beans. The cheap alternatives may contain Robusta beans, noted for their higher caffeine content but harsh flavors. “Nasty” is a term commonly linked to Robusta coffees by Arabica devotees. But these types of coffee can be expensive. If your barista budget has taken a hit, there are plenty of good grocery store brands that deliver your morning buzz at half the price of fancy beans.

Rule 4. Grind Your Own

Coffee starts losing quality almost immediately upon grinding. The best-tasting brews are made from beans ground just before brewing. Coffee connoisseurs prefer to grind in expensive burr mills, but affordable electric “whirly blade” grinders like Bodum will do a serviceable job, especially if the mill is rocked during grinding to get a fine, even particle size. But before we jump all in, we need a basic iced coffee recipe — the kind that we can adapt as and when we want, and work from there.

With that in mind, we asked coffee expert and Modern Standard Coffee founder, Lynsey Harley, how to make the best iced coffee and she’s filled us in on a few tips and tricks, as well as given us the down-low on our favourite caffeinated bev.

How do you make iced coffee?

It’s easy, really. All you need is a tall glass filled with ice, brewed coffee and some vanilla syrup (if you fancy). Mix it all up and there you have it! A decadent glass of homemade, no-fuss iced coffee.

If you really feel like pushing the boat out, you could make it using a shaker. Chuck all your ingredients in and shake, like a cocktail. Think of it like a non-alcoholic espresso martini!

What’s the difference between iced coffee and cold brew?

Iced coffee is, well, iced… coffee. It’s as simple as serving regularly brewed coffee over a glass full of ice. But if you want to get a little more technical, Lynsey says, “Iced coffee is made with espresso that’s brewed for around 25 seconds.”

Cold brew is a little less straightforward and requires a lot more time. Rather than simply serving regularly brewed coffee over ice, cold brew involves leaving course ground coffee steeped in cold water for a minimum of 12 hours.

The longer the coffee sits, the stronger (and tastier) the flavour.

Lynsey describes cold brew, as a “concentrate, that you dilute with whatever you want; milk, water or tonic.”

Should you add sugar?

If you’re after a sweet kick, then yes. But it’s worth adding the sugary element in through syrup form (like vanilla or hazelnut syrup), especially if you’re adding it directly into cold coffee. This is because standard sugar granules won’t dissolve. If you’re wanting to use proper sugar, then dissolve it into your hot water beforehand.

Are freshly ground coffee beans a better choice?

Let’s face it, freshly ground coffee beans always taste better. But we’re not coffee snobs. So, if you’re in a rush or need that caffeine fix ASAP, there’s nothing wrong with using instant coffee.

What add-ins can you use?

Like anything, you can add your own spin on things. If you’re looking for something sweet, add a drop of vanilla syrup. You could even amp things up with a spoonful of ice cream (float-style or blended through, your choice).

Fancy something more indulgent? Add a couple teaspoons of cream.

What can I do to prevent my iced coffee from going watery?

To make sure your iced coffee doesn’t turn out to be a cold watery mess, try doubling down on the amount of coffee you’re using. Or, if you like, make your own coffee ice cubes. Simply make a batch of coffee, allow to cool, pour in an ice tray and freeze.

Fans of NCT are sure to know about Jaemin‘s infamous iced americano order: a Venti-sized iced americano with no water and 4 extra shots! On a recent appearance on Eric Nam‘s podcast, K-pop Daebak w/ Eric Nam, Jaemin elaborated on his order, and gave fans an update on his coffee intake.

Eric asked Jaemin if it was true that the coffee lover drank 6 cups of coffee a day. Jaemin admitted that he does love coffee, but he didn’t have 6 cups a day.

This is how I drank coffee — when you go to Starbucks, there’s a Venti size, and I would make an order: I would tell them to put in only ice, without water, and put in 8 shots of espresso.

The idol explained how, when the ice melted from the espresso, it would perfectly fill up the Venti cup. While he didn’t drink 6 cups of that a day, Jaemin revealed he would drink 2 or 3!

Eric jokingly asked, “And you didn’t have a heart attack?” Jaemin explained that no, he didn’t have a heart attack, but it did raise his tolerance for caffeine. He stated that when he had a normal cup of coffee, it didn’t feel like it had any caffeine!

Because fans were concerned about the idol’s caffeine intake, Jaemin said he began to cut back little by little. He told Eric that he now drinks an average of 2 to 3 cups of “basic” coffee a day.

As with all speciality drinks it is important to get the espresso right, but there is also a knack to frothing your milk, something which Paul explains.

With a latte, it is important not to introduce too much milk foam to the drink. Instead, you should be aiming for a nice, thin layer of foam to top off the latte.

First, fill your filter basket with the correct level of coffee and set your espresso to brew into your latte glass. Whilst this is happening and the machine is working its magic, you should start to heat the milk.

Given that milk makes up about 2/3rds of a latte, it is vital to get this stage right.

Top tip: If you’re starting out, don’t be afraid to split the espresso making and milk frothing into two separate tasks.

Just as you would when creating a cappuccino and other speciality beverages, we suggest only 1/3 filling your milk jug.

This is because there needs to be enough space in the container for the milk to expand but, on the other hand, there needs to be enough present to achieve the required foaming motion.

Give the steam arm a quick purge and then place the arm just underneath the surface of the milk in order to introduce a little bit of air into the liquid.

After a few short, sharp ‘chirps’, raise the milk jug an inch or so and position the steam arm to the side which should initiate a nice swirling motion as the milk begins to evolve. Before the milk gets too hot and begins to lose its taste, turn off the steam arm and prepare to pour.

Pour the milk into your glass. Initially, start from a relatively high position – about an inch or two above the glass – and then gradually work your way down until the jug is almost resting on the glass, steepening the angle of the jug as you do so.

  • Keep it in the fridge. It should last around 30 days.
  • Make the Iced Coffee
  • Use double the coffee grounds, preferably 100% Arabica beans, to brew a strong pot of coffee.

  • Pour the brewed coffee into the ice-filled pitcher right after it’s brewed.
  • Then, add the simple homemade syrup (or one of the four flavors presented below), and the cream, and stir everything in the pitcher.

  • ¾ cup of water
  • 1 cup of sugar

  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract

Preparation

  • Pour only ¼ cup of water in a small pot, and add the sugar.
  • Stir the sugar until it completely dissolves and bring to a boil.
  • Once the mixture starts to boil, put the lid on, and cook for two minutes.
  • Stir well until the mixture turns a light amber color.
  • Once you notice the mixture gets this color, set aside from heat and pour the remainder of the water. While stirring, add the salt and the vanilla.

Hazelnut Syrup

Ingredients

  • 1 cup granulated white sugar
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 tsp. hazelnut extract

The Best Way to Make Iced Coffee

Forget cold brew and forget pouring your coffee over ice. The best iced coffee is brewed hot and concentrated with an Aeropress, slowly cooled down, then served like a cocktail.

First, let me answer a few questions:

Why do you hate cold brew?
I don’t hate it, in fact I even drink it from time to time. It is just this method is better. Cold brew takes more beans, takes much longer to brew (12 hours!), and is messier to clean up. I always have to strain mine because I don’t like sludge. The taste is a bit off, too. Brewing coffee with hot water releases oils and compounds that you won’t get by brewing it at lower temperatures. This means that cold-brewed coffee is missing part of its essential flavor profile. Why would you settle for that when you can have better?

Why can’t I just pour my hot coffee over ice or brew my V60 over ice?
Well, you can. I won’t stop you. I probably won’t drink the result, either. Pouring hot liquids over ice melts the ice and dilutes the liquid. Unless you have exceptionally great ice, it will also change the favor even if you start out with a concentrate. Let ice melt in a glass and then drink it. It probably doesn’t taste nearly as good as the water you made the ice with. It picks up flavors in your freezer, and not the kind of flavors you want in your coffee.

So what can we do?
The answer is to make legitimately good, hot coffee and then cool it down without diluting it.

I was first introduced to this method on Marco Arment’s blog. He gets the credit for coming up with the idea.

If you don’t have an AeroPress yet, get one. It is only $30 and makes one of the best cups of coffee you can possibly make at home. Here is what the contraption looks like:

  1. Measure out 40g of coffee beans on your kitchen scale. (For reference, this is quite a bit. It will look comical. I use between 15 and 25g of coffee for a normal cup. The goal is to make it concentrated here.)

Grind the beans like you normally would for an AeroPress (about as fine as table salt). Consult Google for the correct grind setting on whichever grinder you use.

Put the grounds into the AeroPress and brew it as your normally would. Here are regular instructions and here are instructions for the inverted method that I use.

Pop out the puck/clear out the grounds from the Aeropress, then repeat steps 1-3 until the your container is full. I use this 16oz glass jug that fits the AeroPress perfectly and will hold 3 full brews. That is 16oz of liquid from 120oz of beans. Quite the caffeine jolt!
How to make iced coffee perfectly

  • Cover and refrigerate this container until it is chilled. I like to make it before I go to bed and let it chill overnight.
  • Serving

    While I prefer my hot coffee unadulterated by dairy and sugar, I almost always put dairy and sugar into my cold coffee. No matter how you brew it, coffee will always have some compounds that don’t taste very good when they are cold.

    This coffee concentrate is very strong. It was made from 120g of ground coffee beans. For reference, for a pour over I use the same amount of liquid (

    16oz) but only 30-35g of coffee beans. Go easy on this stuff. If you overdo it, you’ll be jittery (and you’ll be sorry.) I treat it like liquor.

    I make this the same way I would a cocktail. In fact, I usually make it in a rocks glass. Bonus points if you use a gorgeous Mazama glass. Here is what I mix up:

    • 1 large ice cube
    • 2-3 oz of concentrated coffee
    • Half and Half to taste
    • Simple syrup made with demerara to taste

    With two coffee drinkers in the house (one a full-blown caffeine addict and one who enjoys coffee but doesn’t always need it), we go through a full batch approximately every three days.

    I typically make a batch of this after dinner and put it in the fridge. It is fully chilled and ready to go in the morning.

    Combine 2/3 cup of coffee grounds and 3 cups of cold water in a glass jar or French press, stir, and let the brew sit overnight. In the morning, pour it through a sieve (or lower the French press plunger) to strain out the grounds. Combine this concentrate with an equal amount of cold water. As for the cubes? Make them with the concentrate: As they melt, your joe gets better.

    You’ll want to make your coffee cubes ahead of time. Just brew some really dark coffee, pour into an ice cube tray, and freeze.

    Fill a large cup with your coffee cubes.

    Pour in the half-and-half.

    This is my favorite right now!

    Pour in your syrup.

    Then pour in your extra dark coffee.

    Give it a little stir.

    The coffee cubes keep your iced coffee from watering down. You can even try a couple of frozen espresso shots in there!

    Iced coffee — the cooler and more refreshing relative of your morning cup of joe — is a blessing come summertime. Not only does it provide you with your much needed caffeine fix, but it cools you down during those unbearably hot months. While it sounds deceptively simple to make (just pour coffee over ice, right?), there is an art that’s worth perfecting when it comes to making iced coffee; you wouldn’t want to suffer three months of not-so-good coffee just because it’s served over ice.

    There are two schools of thought when it comes to iced coffee, the hot-brewed and the cold-brewed. While they adhere to very different methods, there is one point both agree upon: pouring regular-brewed coffee over ice is nothing short of a travesty. Coffee is a fragile beverage, and it doesn’t sustain extreme change in temperatures well. Often times, this will result in a coffee that is acrid, sour or weak.

    So, how do you make a good iced coffee? Well, it depends on your tastes and the way you perceive iced coffee. If you want an iced beverage that tastes like regular coffee, the hot-brewed method will give you that result. If you see iced and regular coffee as two separate entities, you may be a fan of the cold-brew variety. The hot-brewed method will result in a more robust flavor while the cold brew is mellow and naturally sweet.

    Hot-Brewed
    The hot-brew iced coffee method originated in Japan. Using an old-fashioned (and now very much in style) pour over, the coffee is brewed directly onto ice so that it’s instantly cooled. The idea behind this method is that hot water coaxes out the natural acidity and delicate floral flavors and since it’s immediately chilled, it doesn’t experience a change of flavor when the temperature is altered.

    The hot-brew method accounts for a certain amount of ice melt during the brewing process so you don’t have to worry about a watered down cup. For the exact ratios, check out the New York Times recipe. The best coffee bean option for this process is a light, fruity roast.

    Cold-Brewed
    Cold brew requires a little extra planning, but it’s well worth the wait. It’s mild, smooth and just a tad sweet. While the hot-brewed coffee has gone through a chemical change which affects the flavor of the bean, the cold-brew method “extracts more slowly and selectively” and doesn’t alter or enhance the original flavor profile.

    Some people prefer this method because it has a softer and less acidic flavor — approximately 67 percent less acid than hot-brewed coffee. And since it has a milder flavor, a full darker roast is recommended for brewing. Get the cold-brew recipe here.

    Once your iced coffee is made, you can alter it to your liking. Milk, cream or even condensed milk lighten its flavor. Add sugar, which is best if using in a simple syrup, to your liking. And if you’re feeling a little fancy, flavored syrups work well here.

    Greek frappe coffee is really easy and quick to make at home, so we have put together this authentic Greek frappe coffee recipe with everything you need to know to master the art of making the perfect frappe as served traditionally throughout Greece.

    History of Greek Frappe coffee

    Greek frappe or Nescafe frappe was invented in 1957 in Thessaloniki at the International Trade Fair, where Yannis Dritsas, the representative of the Nestlé Company was exhibiting a new product for children. The product was a chocolate beverage, which was produced instantly by mixing with milk and shaking in a shaker.

    Dimitris Vakondios (Dritsas’ employee) was looking for a way to make hot instant coffee during his break, but couldn’t find hot water. So he decided to mix in a shaker instant coffee with cold water and ice cubes in a shaker.

    What is Greek Frappe coffee (Greek iced coffee)?

    Greek frappe coffee is an iced coffee made using instant coffee (Nescafe) and water, that has been shaken to produce a foamy, and refreshing drink. You can add ice cubes after beating the coffee and also sugar and milk, according to preference. Greek iced coffee can be “sketos”, “metrios”, “glykos”, ‘me gala”, according to the proportions of the ingredients and personal preference.

    Variations of Frappe coffee according to proportions of ingredients

    • “Sketos” (plain, no sugar, no milk): If you like your frappe coffee without sugar and milk, then add only 1-2 tsps of instant coffee, depending on how strong you want your coffee, and cold water.
    • “Metrios” (medium sweetness) : 1-2 tsps of instant coffee, depending on how strong you want your coffee, 1-2 tsps of sugar (equal amount of coffee and sugar)
    • “Glykos” (sweet) : 1-2 tsps of instant coffee, depending on how strong you want your coffee, 2-4 tsps of sugar (double the amount of sugar than coffee)
    • “Me gala” (with milk) : 1 tbsp evaporated milk (the amount of milk can vary according to preference)

    Frappe recipe – How to make Greek frappe?

    To prepare a Greek frappe coffee you will need a frappe mixer. A standard cocktail shaker will be ok, but you can also use an electric milk frother or a milkshake machine to achieve a creamier froth.

    We find the best way to make Greek frappe is first to get a tall glass, a teaspoon and an electric whizzer. Then add instant coffee (Nescafe), sugar and a shot of cold water. Whiz the mixture until a thick, creamy foam is made. Pour the mixture into the serving glass. Then add 3 ice cubes and milk if you like, fill up the glass with cold water and serve with a drinking straw.

    There you go! Your Frappe is ready to serve and enjoy!
