Everything basically comes down to a few steps that look simple enough on paper, but might play out differently for you as you’re on your way to monetizing your passion

It’s important to not think of the end goal being only making money.

You can’t sustain a business this way because it’s too narrow of a definition of success. Yes, you want to make money along the way, that’d be terrific, but you also want to share a part of yourself with the world.

Sharing your product, whatever it is, has to mean something to you and your customers.

Your business won’t be sustainable if you only care about how much you’re earning – you have to care about your product, about your customers and the impact your product is having on their lives.

Your customers are your lifeblood in this particular scenario – never dismiss them.

They are real people with real wishes and desires and they are what will either help your business grow or run it into the ground. So, here are a few things to consider as you move ahead with your side hustle:

There are hundreds and hundreds of articles online telling you how to monetize your passion and turn your hobby into something more.

There are life coaches, business gurus, and advisors that will, for a fee, tell you exactly what you need to do if, for example, you want to turn your passion for baking into something that also brings in the cash.

If you don’t have the money to pay someone who’ll coach you through the process, you kind of have to figure it out on your own, with the help of the internet, friends, or acquaintances who’ve done it before you.

Out of all the advice, you’ll hear, both solicited and unsolicited, there are some truths that can not be denied, and some of them might not be what you want to hear.

One unavoidable truth is that starting your own business is hard and the second part of that truth is that you might fail, and fail hard. We rarely want to think about this kind of outcome, but unfortunately, it’s the one thing that’s fairly common.

According to SBA (Small Business Administration), 80% of new businesses actually make it past their first year.

It’s what comes after that is a bit more discouraging – with roughly half surviving the first five years and only one-third making it past the 10-year mark.

There are many reasons why small businesses fail:

  • Not enough initial investment
  • Oversaturated market
  • Your pricing was too high
  • You’ve over-extended yourself, not realizing how much time and sweat will actually go into creating something that will flourish in the long term.

We’re all aware of the success stories out there – of bloggers making millions doing what they love, whether it’s traveling, cooking their favorite recipes or making their own homemade candles, or becoming an interior or a graphic designer.

And sure, they share some of it with us, common folk, but are they really sharing the whole truth?

What it cost them financially, emotionally, and physically to get to where they are.

Some bloggers do share, and that’s nice and all, but all stories and businesses are different. People are different, so each story, including your own, might reflect, but never copy someone else’s.

Probably the very, very first step is to figure out what your passion is and whether it’s actually something you can imagine doing for a living or something that you enjoy doing only occasionally, whether it’s starting a lifestyle blog, SaaS, or something else entirely.

These two are different things – your passion is something that you probably can live without, but it’s not the kind of life you’d want to live, whereas the second thing – what you enjoy doing, but can go without for long stretches of time, that’s not your passion at all.

So, the first step – do some soul-searching and reflection and hopefully come to a conclusion whether you do, in fact, have a passion, and if you do, then move on to the next step.

The next step is… what are you actually trying to sell? As I’ve mentioned before, market oversaturation is a real thing, so be careful.

Are you thinking about monetizing your passion project and wondering how to do it?

Before I share a 4-step process with you that can help you begin to turn your passion project into a side hustle, let’s first explore why it might be time for you to do it.

I recently talked to someone who had started a passion project—writing fiction—a while ago.

This person, let’s call her Astra (not her real name) was wondering if she should continue. While the writing was often fun, she wasn’t sure if her passion project was worth it, given the time commitment and that she made no money from it.

Astra’s experience is not unusual at all.

Her experience is very common. Before I decided to do what I love for a living, I started offering free group calls where I helped people work through the blocks that held them back. It was my version of a passion project.

At first, I felt ecstatic. It was wonderful to help people and practice my skills. It was great to do something that felt aligned and that I felt passionate about.

But after a while, that excitement wore of. I needed to figure out why my feelings about my passion project had changed so dramatically.


Here’s what I learned about the need to monetize your passion project:

Motivation persists when efforts feel rewarding and the perception of reward can change.

In other words: your passion project has to feel rewarding to you, and what that means might develop over time.

At first, expressing you passion or getting positive feedback might be enough. But over time, you might also need other rewards to stay motivated. One such reward is financial compensation.

Get clear on if and to what an extent you want to monetize your passion project

The first step to change is clarity. You need to get clear if and to what extent you want to monetize your passion project.

While turning your passion into a side hustle has many benefits, it also has drawbacks. It can turn something that you feel passionate about into something that feels like a job.

The pressure to earn money from your project can kill off the passion that made you start it in the first place. This is something I experienced when I started charging for some of the things I previously did for fun. So, tread carefully. Not everything should be monetized.

The extent to which you want to monetize your passion project also makes a difference:

  • Do you mainly want to cover associated costs?
  • Or do you want to recover expenses and get some extra pocket money from it?
  • Or do you want to go all-in and turn your passion project into a genuine additional income stream?

The more you want to earn from your passion project, the more effort and time you will likely have to put into it.

Example: “Hmm, I definitely want to recover my expenses. It doesn’t feel good to pay money to do this. I also would like to get some pocket money from it. Would I like to turn it into a genuine additional income stream? Perhaps later. Right now, I first want to start earning some money from it.”

You have to build your business around your passion.

I really believe that passion is the proven path to prosperity.

There are four powerful keys of “Doing What You Love, the Money Will Follow”. Many entrepreneurs have violated them to their own peril. I’ve seen so many people fail in their business because they don’t do what they love.

Some people just copy the businesses they see around them.

Remember the shawarma craze?

Create the course content

So you’ve spent time creating (social media) content and have started building a devoted following.

Is there a way to put that effort to good use and start building income from those accomplishments.

Yes, and quite a few ways actually:

Use Native Ads

This is the easiest and most obvious option, albeit not an ideal one.

Monetizing social media content through a respective platform’s ads doesn’t require any other effort from the creator’s part except for producing content which they do anyways.

Most platforms have some requirements as to the amount of following and engagement an account receives in order to monetize their content through ads:

  • On Youtube a channel has to have at least 4,000 valid public watch hours in the last 12 months and more than 1,000 subscribers to be accepted into the Partner Program which includes monetization options through ad revenue sharing.
  • On TikTok, a creator is eligible to join TikTok Creator Fund (their native monetization platform) if they are at least 18 years old, have 10,000 followers or more, have generated at least 100,000 video views in the last 30 days and post original content.
  • On Instagram you can monetize your Reels and that program is still invitation-only. You can also earn money through sponsored badges followers can buy during your live streams but you are required to have at least 10,000 followers to qualify for this option.

Not all social media platforms have come up with native advertising platforms yet, and not all of those that have offer great terms. Besides, native advertising eligibility and TOS tend to change as the platform grows.

Youtube is one platform that is well-known for changing their advertising platform several times leaving creators confused and desperate. It is also well-known that Youtube’s native ads no longer delivers high incomes, so even the most popular creators are looking for more ways to monetize their videos.

Yet, there is no harm in giving this option a try if you qualify.

Create and Sell Digital Products

Monetizing digital content is another pretty easy option that allows you to make some income from your social media content.

It is not easy to come up with great content that people would buy but in some niches it is a very common way to make money. You can sell worksheets, original recipe collections, food plans, and more.

You don’t have to master any design skills to create something useful. It can be as easy as designing an eBook in Google Docs. It’s the quality of the product that counts.

This option gives you the freedom and flexibility of relying on your own product and your own process.

In some niches, you can even sell your services (coaching, consulting, training, etc.)

Your affiliate program choice will depend on your audience and the nature of your content. So look carefully and try a few products – it may take time to find a perfect fit!

Find Sponsors

If you have a popular and an active social media channel, companies are likely to already be approaching you with sponsorship opportunities. There are platforms to find more.

Don’t promote anything that comes your way though. Insist on trying a product first and promote it only if you genuinely liked it.

Trust and reputation take a lot of time to build but both can be ruined if you start coming up with misleading sponsorships.

Sell Branded Merchandise (Merch)

If you have developed a distinct visual identity, consider coming up with exclusive merch for your fans and followers to buy.

There are a few platforms allowing you to create all kinds of merch, from Tshirts to purses.

The only downside of this option is that you need to build a really excited and engaged audience which is not easy.

Sell Physical Products

Many creators and social media influencers attract their audience due to a distinct talent that shines through their content.

It is often possible to turn that talent into a product. These could be ornaments, paintings or photos, and even make-up lines.

Self-publishing and selling books is another great idea, especially for those who have created enough content to repackage into a book.

How to monetize your passion

Recently, I was strolling through my neighborhood listening to one of Oprah’s Super Soul Conversation podcast episodes (is there a better way to chase away the Sunday blues?!). The guest was Elizabeth Gilbert. Yes, the Elizabeth Gilbert of Eat Pray Love fame; the Elizabeth Gilbert that has inspired us all to follow Big Magic and commit to discovering our passion; the Elizabeth Gilbert of whom I seriously can’t get enough.

How to monetize your passion

Except this time, she had a slightly different message. She spoke about a realization after reading an email from a disheartened fan. It hit her that her years of encouraging people to follow their passion as the surefire road to true happiness, it had actually led to a promise of something that’s not always realistic.

Maybe you don’t have a passion that is meant to be your life’s work. You’re not a painter, you’re not a poet, not a writer, not someone who plans on founding the non-profit that will solve world suffering. And that’s OK. You could be an amazing friend, an incredible mother, or someone who finds joy and curiosity in the everyday. You do not need passion for anything other than life itself.

But, what I actually got out of this podcast was something even greater — something that resonated with the culture we live in today, where we’re bombarded with messages telling us that we haven’t made it unless we quit our day jobs and follow the work that brings us unlimited joy.

Too often, the message of carving out your solopreneur journey is pitched in the same, “You’ve got this, girl!” voice that we’ve come to associate with MLMs and Facebook messages from high school acquaintances that are hawking the next big get-rich-quick scheme. Our passions have become commodified to the point where we’re led to believe that we are somehow inadequate if we haven’t quite figured out a way to make six-figures while sitting on a beach in Bali.

Of course, if that’s your goal, that’s great. Get after it.

But, if it’s not, don’t measure yourself against your ability to make money from something that you enjoy simply for the act of doing or creating. You don’t need to sell your art to derive value from it; you don’t need to leave behind your 9-5 because you have an eye for photography; you don’t need to become a digital nomad to appreciate travel. Your passions can be the exclamation points that punctuate your days, rather than the money signs that drive your motivation.

Don’t measure yourself against your ability to make money from something that you enjoy.

Plus, think about the implications of monetizing the things that bring you joy. When you need a stress release from the grind of the everyday, you turn to painting or writing. What would happen if those things were no longer your retreat, but your primary source of income? While it can be wonderful to share something you love with the world and make money from it, it can also be exhausting. It can suck the inspiration right out of your passion when you feel like you’re on the clock, always trying to meet deadlines and hit sales marks. It’s easy to let your billable hours creep into your off hours when passion and work are one in the same, and while some people thrive in a state of constant creation, others find themselves rapidly approaching burnout.

However, when you release the need to turn your passions into entrepreneurship, you are given the freedom to fully enjoy the act of creating, doing, and finding pure joy. You’re no longer at risk of compromising the unadulterated excitement you get from exploring and growing your talents — you’re permitted to truly pursue your passion for passion’s sake.

Now, I realize this may sound rich coming from someone who is a writer — someone who did find a way to turn their passion into a career. For some of us, like Elizabeth Gilbert has often said and says again on Oprah’s podcast, this was the only choice. But, for many others, we can excel in a career that brings us fulfillment, and we shouldn’t feel pressured to leave it behind just because the blissful concept of full-time pursuit of passion is the bill being sold on social media.

Let me guess…You’ve been working the same boring job for too long. You longingly look out the window on the clock or silently fantasize about what you could be doing instead. Maybe you go home and do some moonlighting into the wee hours of the morning. Whatever the case may be, you’re ready for something new. You’re ready to follow your passion.

“That’s impossible!” you say, as you’re convinced that “there’s no money in that” or “I work too much” or “that’s way too hard.” While being practical is an important piece of the puzzle, I’d like to invite to ask yourself, “What is the cost of my happiness?” The truth is, it’s priceless.

As someone who’s been there, done that, and been up and down the rollercoaster, I’ll tell you that monetizing your passion project is both worth it AND it’s possible. Here’s how!

Where to Start

What IS Your Passion?

This is the most important question of all. Do you know what you want your passion project to be? If you already do, skip this step. If not, try this exercise.

This might give you a little insight into your purpose and passions in life.

What is Your Product?

Now that you’ve found your passion, you want to live it . I’ll go ahead and remind you, it i s possible! Rather than just imagining your dream life becoming real life , you can actually monetize your passion project. Take a moment to find a piece of paper and a pen, maybe even a poster board if you want to go all out, and start brainstorming these three questions.

What is your product?

Remember, you’re turning something you’re passionate about into a sellable product. What will you be selling? Is it a physical object, a service, entertainment, delicious food? The more specific you can be about what your product is, the better!

Who is your audience?

Being clear on your target market is just as important as nailing down the specifics of your product. Who are you selling to? Think about age range, demographics, culture, salary, values, and interests. Create your ideal “avatar” or client and this will help you develop your marketing plan in the long run.

How can you be different?

The market is competitive, that’s just the truth. Chances are, there’s someone out there who is already doing what you want to do. How can you carve out a unique niche for yourself? What will set you apart from the others? What will capture someone’s attention in the middle of hundreds of advertisements?


Your marketing plan is what will bring your passion project to life. It’s how you get the word out, gain clients, and get the ball rolling. Exciting, right?! Take out a new sheet of paper and get started on your marketing plan. Consider these points:


Time to get creative! Now that you know what your product is and who you’re marketing to, you’re ready to brand. A brand is a business’s identity. It includes the company name, logo, color schemes, and overall personality. If you have great branding, you’ll attract your desired niche and stand out in the crowd.


Now for the nitty-gritty. Do some research and find out which platforms best capture your product and audience. Social media is the gold mine of marketing! You can use platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Of course, with the size of the Internet these days, the options are unlimited. Once you’ve decided which platforms to use, create an outline to track how often and what type of content to post. This will keep you on track.


You’ve put in the legwork and are ready to monetize your passion project. The best way to motivate yourself is to set goals. Decide what you want to achieve and by when. For example, you want 20 new clients by the end of the year. Reverse engineer how that would look – Where did you find them? What ultimately made them hit that “buy” button? Does 20 new clients mean you need to revamp your whole system? Would you need to hire support? How do you plan to manage your time at full capacity? Remember to be specific, set new goals when you’ve achieved your old ones, and be gentle with yourself if you don’t reach them.


Baby Steps First

Turning your passion project into a reality can be scary, especially if you haven’t started yet! My advice to you? Start small. Set tiny targets for yourself. You don’t have to go all out at once. Any milestone is huge and will count towards your ultimate goal.

Another point I’d like to make is that being uncomfortable is OKAY. In fact, that’s exactly how you ought to be: out of your comfort zone . You’re setting out on a brand new journey. As you dive headfirst into your fears, you’ll come out much more strong, confident, and knowledgeable.

Fun is Key!

It’s easy to get burnt out, even when doing something you love. Running your own business can look like working crazy hours such as late into the night or ridiculously early in the morning. If this happens, take a step back and a few deep breaths. Think about ways you can incorporate fun into your work time or in between sessions. Remember why you started this venture in the first place…because it’s what you love to do!

Keep Going

Turning your passion into a business will likely lead to occasional setbacks. Don’t let this discourage you. These bumps in the road are great learning opportunities and show you how you can do better the next time around. I encourage all of my clients to keep a Success Journal to capture all of the wins and good moments along the journey. That way, whenever they’re facing a setback, they can look back at the journal for inspiration! With that being said, keep going! It’s worth it.

Getting some extra help (especially if it’s the right help) is a guaranteed way to move forward with your ideas, grow your marketing techniques, and increase revenue. Monetizing your passion project can be a big project, so investing in the extra help will pay off!

How to monetize your passion

It would be ideal if we could all make money pursuing our passions, but there are some jobs that no one seems to have a passion for, which would create serious problems for the rest of us. However, it is possible to follow your passions, monetize it, and make a living doing something that you love.

The question becomes “Where do you start?” That one is followed quickly by “How do you do that?” The answer, as with the answer to many other things, is that it depends. It depends on your passion, what your definition of making a living is, and how determined you are to make that passion into a profession, a vocation, and even a career.

It is nice when someone asks, “What do you do?” to be able to answer with the thing you are most passionate about. But to love what you do and monetize from your passion, there are some steps you need to follow.

Your passion might be photography. However, that is a broad field and there are many types of photography. Some are easy to turn into a way to make a living, others are much harder. To determine how to monetize your passion, you will have to narrow it down. For instance, if you want to be a photographer, you will have to determine what kind of photographer you want to be.

If you like to take pictures of people, there are ways to make a living as a portrait photographer, or you can do something outside the box like Brandon Stanton did with Humans of New York. If you prefer to take landscapes and nature photos, there are other ways to sell your photos and prints online and make money from your photos.

The key is that you need to specialize beyond a general occupation like writer or photographer to what kind of writer or photographer you want to be.

Getting educated does not mean that you have to go to college. It does mean that you need to know something about your passion and the best ways to use it, and that you need to get better at it. It is rare that your first novel will be the Great American Novel That Launches You to Fame. It is more likely that this will come several books down the line if it comes at all, once you have learned more about the writing craft.

The same is true for photography, music, or any other passion. It is unlikely that a self-taught photographer without a mentor or any education, or a musician who has never had lessons, will simply become the next Ansel Adams or Carlos Santana. The most famous writers,

photographers, and musicians have all had mentors and learned from someone even if just from peers, writing groups, or community classes.

Education does not have to be formal, but it does have to exist. Without education it is more likely that your passion will remain a hobby rather than a profession.

One option for monetizing your passion is to get a job. If you can get someone else to pay you to do the thing that you love the most, you’re winning. Of course, for some passions this is easier than others, but you may be able to get someone to pay you to take portraits even if it is just in a small studio. This still creates the opportunity to gain experience.

The same is true for writing. You might get a job writing blogs for different websites. That counts as writing practice and you have the chance to be creative just like if you are writing fiction. It also teaches you to write tight and too a deadline. The same can be said for journalism and other kinds of writing.

The experience you gain in working for someone else can also benefit you in other ways. It can set you up for going your own way and starting your own business.

This is yet another way to monetize your passion. Start your own portrait studio or open a gallery. Open your own coffee shop or embark on a freelance writing or photography career. Whatever you are passionate about, look for a way to turn it into your own business.

A word of caution here: this also means you need to have a mind for business and be self-motivated. This is often the case with our passions, but you need to be sure that you understand there are administrative burdens and tax issues you must deal with when you are self-employed that do not affect you when you work for someone else.

Owning your own business lets you be in charge of your vision and make decisions without placating someone else’s desires and dreams unless you take on partners or investors. This does have its drawbacks though, so be sure you are not ignoring the advice of others who could really help your business grow and thrive.

You’ll need some business education to do this, so besides being knowledgeable in your passion you will also need to be knowledgeable in how to effectively run a business.

Monetization of a blog is another great way to make money with something you are passionate about. It is also a lot of hard work. You will need to first choose and set up a domain name, one that is easy to say, spell, and type into a browser. Then you will have to choose hosting and design your site.

Once you have done those things though, you can start blogging. You will need to build up an audience through social media and even paid ads first, but once you have some traffic coming to your site, you can then look at making some money. * Ads: You can run native ads like those from Google or Amazon, or you can sell ad space on your site, and even through the use of social media.

* Affiliate Programs: These are links, photos, or ads you put on your site that allow you to get paid every time someone makes a purchase.

* Sponsored Posts: Some brands and even SEO companies will want to be featured on your blog and will pay you to place their posts on your site.

* Site Sponsors: When you have enough traffic, a brand or business associated with the topic of your site might want to be featured regularly. This site sponsorship can be a great source of regular revenue for your blog.

You can monetize your passion in a number of ways. Doing what you love and making money at it makes your life richer and more fulfilling. It will still be work, but if it is work you love, you will be a happier and healthier person for it. Follow this guide to monetizing your passion today.

You have to decide these three things before monetizing your passion

I monetized my writing last month.

I started writing back in December 2020, and I wanted to take writing seriously. Six months into writing, I made over 2k from writing on this platform and freelancing gigs.

I had no experience in writing before this.

One of the things I hesitated doing was to monetize my writing. But at the same time, I wanted to learn how to make money as a writer.

I was scared that if I monetized my writing, I’ll fell out of love with it. It would just be another “job.” I’ve done five projects for one brand, and so far, I still love writing. There are days that I don’t write, and my heart feels empty.

So if you’re thinking of monetizing your writing, here are some of the processes that helped me decide.

I published 60 long-form essays and 50 short-form essays before I monetized my writing.

I had to be sure that I liked writing, and what’s the best way to find out? By doing it a lot. For someone who’s multipassionate, I get bored pretty quick and easy. But writing seemed to be sticking with me, so I knew I had to nurture this skill.

I made sure to do that by doing it every day and publishing at least 3 per week on Medium and Twitter platforms.

Before you start thinking of monetizing, you have to be comfortable in writing. Because when you’re not comfortable, it’s going to be hard for you to write for other people.

How to apply this today:

Take some time in figuring out on a scale of 0–10 how comfortable you are with the skill. If your comfort level is below 5, then it’s a sign that you still need to keep practicing for free.

Practice writing until you’re comfortable in doing it for yourself. Eventually, you can figure out how to write for other people.

There are many forms to directly monetize your writing.

You can write long-form blog posts for others (i.e. content writing), or you can help people sell their product with written content (i.e. copywriting).

I was comfortable writing blog posts that I was starting to get bored. But of course, I didn’t want to drop it. Instead of picking up a new skill, I used freelancing as an excuse to help me become a better writer.

Freelancing helps you learn how to cold pitch, face rejections, negotiate contracts, get paid well for your craft. Overall, it helps boost self-confidence.

I do have the luxury to try out freelancing because I have my nursing job, so I’m not worried about putting food on the table. I understand that not many people can afford to try this journey before going all in.

But when you put yourself in a controlled challenging situation, you’re forced to grow.

How to apply this today:

If you want to grow as a writer, you have to learn how to challenge yourself. This can look like submitting your pieces in bigger publications or monetizing. You might not know what to do, but you’re smart enough to figure it out. The only way to know what you need to learn is by diving into the experience.

I’ve always wanted to become a travel blogger.

Before the pandemic, I travelled a lot. But I never took the time to document my travels, which has become one of my regrets. But I realize that it’s because I don’t want to be known in the travel industry.

Diving into the world of creator economy and entrepreneurship, I fell in love.

So I became a creator by being a writer on two platforms, one of them being Twitter. This helped me meet amazing and interesting people in the creator economy.

Now, I want to learn everything that I can in the creator economy. As a self-motivation, I’m using my writing as a service to help creator-focused businesses. You can find companies and brands that target you as their audience.

How to apply this today:

If you know how to write well, you can combine your skill of writing and your personal interests. If you have a love for travel, you can start looking up brands, companies or publications that love to post stories on travelling. When you do this, you showcase your writing skills and you’re forced to learn the trends in the industry you’re interested in. It’s a win-win.

My first freelancing gig fell into my lap, and I’m pretty grateful for it.

If you have no financial worries, you can take the time to decide if freelancing is for you. So far, I’ve had my misconceptions about this world busted. You don’t need to start on UpWork or Fiverr to freelance.

I learned that you could get paid well for your first writing project and use that to get new clients.

But again, this whole experimentation only works if you can afford to. If you still have a day job, keep it and use it to your advantage to fund your side hustles or your passions.

You can always leap later on, so there’s no need to rush monetizing your craft.

How to monetize your passion

You can monetize your passion with some hard work and creativity.

Have you ever wondered how to start monetizing your passion? If you are already living your dream, doing what you truly want to do, and making money doing it, then great. You have already cracked the code. Unfortunately, most people aren’t doing that. Most people are working a job to make money for things like bills, other needs, and a few wants. You may have a few hobbies and interests outside of work that you have a passion for. Why not try to monetize them? Here is an overview.

Focus on Your Passion

Basically, don’t try to make money from something that you are passionate about just for the sake of making money. You have to care about your product or service and about your customers. You are solving a problem by bringing your passion to the market, and truly believing in it is key to success. The money will often follow if you treat your customers properly. Nothing is guaranteed of course, but simply chasing money is often the wrong approach.

Starting a business is hard, and the odds of success are against you. Many don’t realize the capital or hard work required to make a go of things. Others don’t understand the market for their service or product. There are fantastic stories of people quitting their day jobs and making millions on their product, but they are definitely in the minority. You will need a plan and a clear-cut set of goals if you hope to be successful.

Define Your Passion

What is your passion? This might be the most important question that you ask yourself. What is that one thing that you absolutely love to do? It is something that you know inside and out. Something that others have commented how well you know it or do it. Whatever this thing is will be the thing you try to monetize.

Start Small

Instead of diving in headfirst, quitting your day job, and starting a business, think about starting small. There is nothing wrong with dipping your toes in the water and experimenting with monetizing your passion on the side. Working at your product or service at night and on the weekends is an excellent way to refine your skills, learn your market, and see what sort of interest exists in the marketplace.

If things ramp up over time, then you can start to make the shift into pursuing your passion on a full-time basis.

Have a Plan

This includes everything from a detailed business plan to knowing your market to learning how to market yourself.

Being passionate and talented towards doing something is great. But if you can’t bring it to market in a meaningful way, then you won’t be able to monetize it to any significant scale.

To be successful you need to study and learn your market. Is your product already oversaturated in the market? Who is your target customer? How are you going to advertise and market your product? How will you raise capital? Can you make yourself unique and standout from the crowd?

You should always be learning, expanding, improving, and networking. You’ll probably have to leave your comfort zone behind, but always remember your passion and your purpose. Many make the mistake of branching out too quickly or into areas that they aren’t truly passionate about.


Have you ever wondered how to start monetizing your passion? Monetizing a passion isn’t easy, but with a plan, a lot of hard work, and a clear focus you just might be successful at doing it. Making millions is not the norm, but you can at least pursue your passion on the side. Bringing your passion to market and making your customers happy could be enough of a reward.

None of the breathing folks in this world don’t have any passion at all.

If you’re reading this right now, I believe that there’s something that you’re good at. Something that you’re best at doing. And that’s what we call “skill”.

That skill would turn into something worthwhile. Something that when you do it, you experience “flow” — a state in which you’re so immersed in what you’re doing that you seem to lose track of time. Something that when you do it, you feel the sense of fulfillment and purpose. something that you can brag to aanyone else because you know, you excel on that talent. Something we call it “Passion”.

With that being said, you need to hone that skill more. Because the good thing is, you can actually earn money by using that.

By the time you finally identify your passion, determine if it’s something very useful to others or does it fill the lacking.

For instance, if you’re good at baking, you can satiate the consumer’s sweet appetite. You can turn that out into a business when youd decide to put up your own bakeshop and serve the customers well.

When you have this special skill, analyze if if that will serve it’s purpose to people.

In that way, not only will you enjoy what your doing but also you get satisfied to serve people well in a profit.

Your passion might fall into either of these two categories: product or service.

Your passion could be something that creates a product which you can turn into a skill that you can leverage to several people. It could be a skill that is so hard to master and yet you’re specially good at it. That said, you can trade it to people in exchange for money.

Before you have to launch your business out of that skill, identify the ways on how you’re gonna market yourself to your future customers. Identify who are those ideal people suited to avail your business.

You have to do marketing so that people will know thaat your skill exists. There are a lot of ways to advertise your business.

For instance, through the internet.

Having been on the internet, you know that it is the medium where most people spend their time on. Therefore, You can market yourself on various types of social media platforms, where there are lots of traffic going on. Because of the power of the interemt, you can have a great chance of reaching them out.

On top of that, you must be skillful at persuading prospect customers to buy your product or service. Here’s where copywriting takes place.

For those people who aren’t familiar about it yet, Copywriting in a nutshell is “Sales in Print”.

That means you advertise your products or services in the form of writing. It is a persuasive form of writing in which you emphasize to the customers why they need your product and what benefit they can get out of it.

The more compelling your writing is, the more you likely sell to them.

Copywriting comes in different forms, it could be an Email Marketing, Landing Page, Social Media Ads, Web Page, Newsletter, etc.

To understand more of that, I highly recommend to follow these great gurus I’ve been following : Neville Medhora and Dan Lok.

Pricing is a crucial part in establishing a business. Since you have to price your product in a way you can get your profit after spendng on what it takes to create that product/service.

There are lots of things you need to consider in pricing.

It is very complex. You should assess if your product is affordable or expensive. However, it all depends on the quality and the time and effort it take to create what you sell.

This final step is when you have to decide what type of business model you’re going to use to sell. There are actually several types of business models to choose from.

Make sure the business model you’re gonna choose does not clash with the mission and vision of your business.

You have to consider also your personal preference for your business because there are some business models despite of being lucrative won’t work for you. Probably due to several factors such as availability of manpower, the space available, the amount of capital, the availability of raw materials, the time etc.

After you have known all of these, you’d better start resonating on how you can hone your passion into a level where you become exceptional and unique.

You can be the next person who becomes more sharply skillful at doing something than anybody else who does it. The more you have strong passion in what you do, the more income you can generate.

There’s nothing more satisfying than earning money out of doing your passion. Because it wouldn’t be so hard for you to make money. And at every failure you come across, you will never lose enthusiasm. It’s pretty easy to bounce back.

You should utilize that special gift of yours or it will wither. Although it can be a God-given gift, it would be a lot better and satisfying if you learn how to monetize your Passion.

But the thing is, it doesn’t have to be just a dream. With the internet being what it is here in the 21st Century, the opportunities are nearly limitless when it comes to creating income streams online.

Think about it. People are spending money on their hobbies each and every day. Seriously. Collectively, there are billions of dollars being spent each and every day online on all kinds of hobbies.

So my question is, why shouldn’t YOU be the source that people are buying from?

You’re probably thinking:

“I don’t have the money to start a business.” Starting an online business is the LOWEST cost business model on the planet. Heck, I started a lawn mowing business at the age of 12 that had a higher overhead than my internet business did when I first got started!


“I don’t have the technical skills required to set all of this up.” Busted again… I don’t have technical skills either… not at all. But I have been able to find resources and software that allows me to set up websites and campaigns using simple drag and drop methods.

If you are really serious about going after your dream lifestyle, you will not allow the small hurdles to get in your way. If you want it bad enough, you WILL figure it out.

OK, so let’s go over what you actually need to do to set up an online business. You’ll find that it’s actually quite simple.

Starting An Online Business From Scratch

Alright, so at the heart and sole of any internet based business is an email list. A list of subscribers that loves to receive your emails.

I guess you could say that the email list is the business.

All of your marketing, everything you do online should be geared towards building that email subscriber list… NOT getting sales and making money.

Because the money comes in when you market products to that email list. People are not going to buy what you’re selling just because they see it on some random website or Facebook post.

Here’s What You Need:

The first thing you’ll need is a blog. My blog is the central hub of my online business. It’s my most important asset (asides from my email list of course).How to monetize your passion

You’ll want to use your blog as a place to provide amazing content. Depending on what niche you’re promoting, you’re going to either provide regular training on your blog or entertainment. Your blog should provide a pleasurable experience to your visitors… NO SALES PITCHES!

You’ll notice that my blog has opt-in forms in which you can enter your email information.

You’ll need some type of free gift to offer your website visitors to entice them to enter their information.

They’ll get your super cool gift, and you’ll get their email information 🙂 Voila! You’re building your list.

And from there, you can provide that list all types of cool content. You’ll want to provide your email list with a great experience as well. You need them to WANT to open your emails. You need them to trust your opinions so that when you do hit them with a sales pitch, they will trust your recommendation and possibly buy what you tell them to buy.

And then you earn an income.


This is a very simplified explanation of what it takes to build an online business.

  1. Build your list (I like using a blog to do this)
  2. Provide value to that list
  3. Market products or services to that list

Like I said, this is a really simplified explanation. There is a bit more to the process, but this is a VERY simplified explanation.

H ow often would you hear someone tell you to “follow your heart” when talking about money and income? Almost never maybe. Nowadays, people often think that earning money and following your heart are two things that are not mutually exclusive. But what if we tell you that it is possible to do both?

Let’s all agree on something first: we are all born with a passion, a burning desire to do something, something that makes us excited and gives us a natural high. Whether it’s a personal interest or a hobby, it’s something we are actually willing to do for free. But the good news is, we can also make money out of our passion. How then do we make this happen?

What are the things that you love doing? What activities spark joy and truly make you happy? What is something you’d be willing to really work hard for?

Clarissa: I love my job in advertising but I also found joy in teaching and singing. I have my full time job from Mondays to Fridays. Then, on Saturdays, I would teach in the university where I graduated from. And, when I have free time, I would accept singing gigs during weddings, concerts or parties.

Sharon: Selling was a gift I discovered when I was really young and still in school. As soon as I discovered this gift, I grabbed every opportunity that presented itself and sold all sorts of things from shoes, shirts, toys, supplements, even firecrackers.

While we are passionate about doing certain things, it is also important to clearly define how far you will use this passion in generating additional income.

Sharon: It is very important to be clear on why you are doing this. That it’s a business even if you are doing it as a hobby and just for fun. It is important to know that you spend on a hobby whereas business brings in the money.

Clarissa: There’s a part of me that’s scared to make the things I’m passionate about as my only source of income because I have days when I’m not as inspired and I wouldn’t like to be forced into doing them just because I need the money. I don’t want to feel pressured to beat deadlines and meet quotas as I usually just want to do these out of love and fun. So, it’s really important to be clear on why you’re doing this and up to what extent you’re willing to monetize your passion.

Sharon: Sheer passion and burning desire were my only capital. What I just did was source out suppliers who would do business on a consignment basis. There are a lot of them out there who are willing to do this so, I started creating partnerships with them.

Clarissa: Skills and talents do not need start‑up costs at all. Since mine were service‑oriented, all I needed to do was market and sell myself to potential clients. Of course, I had to really think about what gigs I wanted to do and what stints I wanted to sign up for.

Nobody becomes successful with just being passionate and wanting to do things. Make sure you don’t get trapped with perfecting your plans. Accept that your plans will be needing re‑work along the way anyway, so just go and start doing it. Invest your time and effort, and give it your best shot.

During this venture, you will also face countless obstacles. Many times, you will question your worth and be pushed to doubt what you can do. But, never let it faze you. Do not shortchange yourself. The more you utilize your unique gifts authentically, the more people are attracted to what you do. They realize that you can do something that no one else can in the exact same way. You ARE special!

For example, I always wondered how to use my ability of storing lots of random facts and information. Sure, it got me to the quarter finals of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire”, but so what! Also, what would my relentless drive to always “build a better mouse trap” and using humor to teach have to do with anything?

Dream it, plan it, do it, LIVE it!

Create a vision board that includes your dreams, your goals and life as you see it. What does life look like in 6 months, 1 year, 2 years, 5 years? What is the life you want to live? Hi, I’m Abderrahman, 30, a full stack developer from Morocco.

How and why did you monetize your passion?

I started as a freelancer in oDesk (Upwork) when I was 20. So, for about 10 years, I have worked as a freelancer, doing stores and websites for customers, working mostly 10-12 hours a day, and got really tired… Then I had an idea: why don’t I create a service/store that can generate money for me on its own?

At some point, I even tried crypto trading, but the market was unstable then, and things aren’t much better now. I invested $2,000 in it, but all I have from it now is $450! So… I needed to find something else.

To make such a store work, I looked for a WordPress ecommerce dropshipping solution and discovered AliDropship. Its WooCommerce version seemed like a right fit for me as it made things easy for everyone and didn’t have monthly payments: for someone who has just started, it’s a huge advantage.

Do you remember the first sale made from your store?

Yes! It happened in about a week after the store was launched. Shortly before that, I set up some push notifications on my site, and got some visitors – and eventually, customers – from them.

There was a person who asked me a ton of questions on chat support, then he disappeared, and after a few seconds I received a PayPal purchase notification, I was so happy! With a $8 product cost, my first sale brought me $4 in profit. I know it’s nothing, but it pushed me to add more and more products.

What product strategy do you use to monetize your passion?

I work with all sorts of products related to my niche: figures, decorations, clothes… To find new products to add to my store, I look for a specific Anime name and see if there are new product arrivals there. I try to focus on the products related to ongoing and new Anime series, as well as the most popular ones, because that’s what people look for. For the pricing, I go with AliDropship’s default markup formula.

How do you promote your business?

With SEO! I figured out that the best buyers are the ones who come from Google and search engines because they look for these specific products deliberately. As I use Google Analytics to analyse my audience, I can say that my buyers are mostly parents who buy gifts for their children. That’s why there’s no point for me to promote the store on Instagram or other social media. I tested an Instagram shoutout once, but it didn’t work for me. So yeah, I get most of my traffic from search engines (Google, Bind, Yahoo), from push notifications, and from social shares of visitors/customers. That’s why I spend nothing on advertising!

Also, at the beginning of my dropshipping journey, I was promoting my website on forums and in anime streaming websites. I was taking part in episodes discussion in the comment sections and forum boards, and offering a welcome coupon to new customers. Of course I was promoting items related to that particular anime being discussed. So, most of the visitors clicking on my links were truly interested to see the offers!

I also work a lot on creating a good on-site experience. As I was a freelancer for many years, I know what clients like when they shop online, what they don’t like, etc. This is why I created my own WordPress theme and some plugins myself: I wanted to achieve a better optimisation and user experience. I would say that my success is 80% due to the visitors loving the design and UI that is cool and easy for them.

What can you tell about managing your business on a daily basis?

It takes me about 1-2 hours every day to complete the tasks. What I do is search and add new products, process orders and answer customer queries. By the way, I strongly recommend business owners to use a chat support widget on their websites. For users to trust your store, they should be confident there is someone behind the monitor who can assist them and answer any questions at any time.

That’s what I do all the time 🙂 I constantly have to deal with AliExpress orders, lost parcels, delayed shipments, extended shipping times, etc. Now, it’s happening because of Covid as orders tend to be delayed and people keep asking about the reasons, ask for refunds, etc.

It still can be managed, though. I offer buyer protection and 60 days money back guarantee. If my clients don’t receive their orders, I refund them to avoid any problems because I believe customers must trust you. Then I ask AliExpress sellers to refund me, too, per AliExpress buyer protection policy. The funny thing is that sometimes I refund orders because of shipping delays, then my buyers receive their parcels in the next 3-7 days, and they say nothing 🙂

After you figured out how to monetize your passion, has your life changed in any way?

Of course! I don’t have to look for customers to work for them, or stay behind my PC 12 hours a day, 7 days a week. Now, I want to start boosting my second store with general products to make it a success, too. As for now, it seems a bit hard to do, but I view it as a new challenge for me!

Any final words of wisdom for those willing to start their ecommerce businesses?

The most important things in a store are the website theme and the niche! Look for a good and simple theme, avoid popups alerts and fake alert notifications or fake sales boosters, just be honest with visitors! I also recommend using some WooCommerce SMS solutions. If you send a SMS confirmation when order is placed, shipped etc., your store policy will look more professional and people will trust you more

This is probably the most affordable and easiest way to start your cosmetics brand empire. Handcrafted cosmetics simply mean that you “cook” your cosmetics in your own kitchen/ house/space. You do not need a laboratory or cosmetics chemist to help you out with formulations

You however need some expertise in knowing what ingredients to buy,where to buy them affordably and most important how to mix them in right proportions. Our advise on this is to buy small inexpensive sampler packs and practise severally before you can invest in a large quantity. Also give free products to your friends and family to test them out and get feedback on what to improve.

Avoid handcrafting skin care products or digestables unless you have prior knowledge or training as cosmetic chemist/pharmacist. Its advisable to always go for vegan and organic ingredients where possible.

Have you been to a beauty shop and seen the same type of makeup brushes (same quality, same colour, same size) selling under different brand names?

Welcome to the world of private label

Private label is whereby you take a manufacturers already finished formulas or products and simply repackage and attach your labels and logo to them. The manufacturer does not allow you to make any changes to the formulations, scents or colours. Most manufacturers have a large inventory of products and allows private entrepreneurs to choose what suits their customers and repackage .

This is an easier route to take if you are looking to launch your products fast into the market. It is also cheaper as compared to contract manufacturing which we will discuss next.

The biggest disadvantage with private label is that you do not have an opportunity to produce unique products. Many products on private label are mass produced and target a low income consumer and therefore the quality is mostly compromised. It is however possible to get great products on private label, but it is challenging and takes a lot of time. Our advise on private label is to contact at least 30 manufacturers and send out a very detailed email explaining exactly what you are looking for (colours, textures, quantities , budget etc) . Based on their responses, narrow down to at least 10 and request samples. Out of these 10 choose 3 depending on quality, minimumorder requirements , your budget and the relationship you build . After testing the samples, if you are satisfied, you can now plan your journey to visit the manufacturers. If not satisfied, rinse and repeat the process. Remember that your name is on these products, so do not compromise on quality!

Please note that most manufacturers are also producing products for big multinationals that order hundreds of thousands of inventory. As a solo entrepreneur ordering one thousand or five thousand pieces of a product, you might/will be ignored. Look for those willing to work with startups.

Custom manufacturing is whereby you provide a manufacturer with your own recipes, ingredients, scents, custom colours and create formulas that are unique to your product. You do not need a PhD in chemistry to produce custom made cosmetics. However you need to research thoroughly on ingredients, their uses and side effects if any. You need to articulate your vision clearly to the cosmetic chemist on exactly the need you want your product to serve and how you want it to feel, look, and smell. This is a much longer , more expensive but ultimately the best route to take when creating your cosmetics brand. It takes a lot of trials and error , and money to finally get your formulations ready. You also needs to be hands on and work hard in hard with the lab to make sure your vision is clearly represented in the end product.

Make sure to ask for educational credentials and reference of brands that your consultant chemist has previously worked on. You can also ask to see quality control certifications of the manufacturer e.g ISO certifications.

Visiting the lab in the country you are manufacturing is extremely important as you can feel textures, see colours and it is easier communicate and build a personal relationship. In regards to health and ethics, you will also be able to ascertain that the factory is modern and clean, your products are not tested on animals and that no child labour is used in developing your products.

Please note that the (MOQ) or minimum order quantities for custom manufacturing are usually very high. This can run to tens of thousands of dollars.

Quality Control

Developing, marketing and selling your own cosmetics line is definately a long process . In this blog, we have only covered 3 ways in which you can start the process. Marketing, branding and selling is an entirely different topic. The most challenging and rigorous part of the process is making sure your products meet all quality control and customs clearance requirements. In Europé, the requirements to manufacture and the requirements by Amazon to sell in their beauty category is mind boggling! In Kenya, you need a certificate of conformity from the country of origin to have your products cleared by customs and KEBS (Kenya Bureau of Standards).

Asides the obvious fact that the recent economic downturn has forced several young people to have multiple sources of income, it is quite the norm these days to meet people who have a full-time job and are running small businesses on the side.

They are also known as “side hustles”, and even full-fledged companies complete with all the bells and whistles.

Sincerely, it is now a reality that a single income cannot sustain a comfortable lifestyle and this has pushed the average young Nigerian to get creative and take a dip in the entrepreneurship pool.

Here are six ways to convert your many interests to money in the bank:

Leave your comfort zone

Starting and running a business is not for the fainthearted, it will constantly push you out of your comfort zone.

For example, if you have a fear of speaking to strangers, you will have to overcome that when networking and marketing your services to potential customers.

Take on practices that will not only push you out of your comfort zone but also work on improving your weaknesses. You don’t have to be an expert, just be comfortable enough to deliver value that people want and need.

You need more than passion

It’s great to be passionate about your business ideas, but don’t let your enthusiasm blind you from reality. Be honest with yourself!

Ensure there is a market to tap into and you are ready to put in the work. Get honest feedback from people around you; even friends and family by offering your services to them.

You have to be truly good at what you do. Your passion could be making people’s faces up, but are you skilled enough to train others?

Also bear in mind that as a business owner, you’ll be responsible for reporting taxes, marketing your business and sorting out your finances. Are you ready for all the responsibility?

Offer Real Value

What void can you fill in the market? For example, if you are a makeup artist and there is no makeup studio around you, that could be a viable business opportunity.

The goal is to take advantage of the gaps in the market, that way you stand out and enjoy greater returns before the copycats join you in that space.

Ask yourself how you can make the industry better? Is this the business that keeps your entrepreneurial juices flowing?

Let’s say your passion is making furniture. Why are you better than your competitors? Is it because your materials are sourced locally? Or your products are unique and one of a kind?

That would be more appealing to customers as opposed to buying generic mass-produced furniture.

When I started my consulting company, I had used several competitors. I knew what made them great, but I also knew what I wanted that they didn’t offer.

I knew how to better the services. I started it and here we are!

Convert your Passion to Cash

There are several ways to make money off your passions:

  • Selling an actual product such as clothing, beauty products online or in a store.
  • Sharing your knowledge about your passion by blogging, writing books or making videos. Between sponsorships, subscribers and selling your own products, you can make a decent living. For example, Arese Ugwu turned her passion for financial literacy into a book – The Smart Money Woman – into a book that is being sold in several countries in Africa and the UK.
  • Offering consulting services by giving advice on anything from law to skincare.
  • Investing in an idea you are willing to financially support.
  • Creating a software or gadget that makes life easier for people. For example, if you were a makeup artist, you could create an app that helps people find the right makeup products for their skin tones.
  • Start an event around your passion, such as a regular meetup, seminar or a festival.

Make Fun a Priority

Maintaining your passion when starting a legitimate business can be difficult. Some people even forget exactly why they started a business in the first place.

To prevent that from happening, always make fun and passion a priority. Your passion should reflect on your company policies, your passion should be communicated to your employees when you are hiring and they have to be equally passionate about your business as well.

Improve Your Skills

It would be great if you have a lot of experience, however, don’t be too hard on yourself, there’s always room for growth and learning. For example, a furniture maker may be great are creating unique tables, but not so good at creating sofas.

You can learn as you go along your journey, don’t wait till you master the craft before you start your business.

Malcolm Gladwell says it takes 10,000 hours to become an expert in any field. Nonetheless, don’t let the perceived amount of time it would take you to be the best at what you do deter you from moving ahead with your plan.

It may not take you that long to master your craft, as you long as you keep looking for ways to improve your skills. Always ask for feedback and track your progress.
