How to remove your windows password

Eliminating your login password from your PC is a bad idea—unless you own a computer in your private home that no one but you will ever touch. In that case, why not remove your password and eliminate that initial step?

In the past, we’ve discussed getting rid of the Windows 10 password by tinkering with Windows’ power settings. There’s a better way to remove the password entirely, however, so that you’ll never need to enter it ever again. We’ve tested this with Windows 10 Pro and Windows 10 Home, and it’s worked using the Windows 10 October 2018 Update, the Windows 10 May 2019 Update, and now the Windows 10 November 2019 Update, as well. (There’s no reason to believe it won’t work on subsequent updates, either.)

We have to reiterate that a password, as well as biometric authentication, or at least a PIN, is still a good idea in case your PC gets lost or stolen, or someone wanders by and decides to poke around. (Windows Hello is great for this!) But if you’re confident such risks don’t apply, read on. You can also take our technique below and re-apply the password requirement if conditions change, such as a houseguest or a new roommate.

Run Netplwiz from the Start menu.

First, click the Windows 10 Start menu and type netplwiz into the Search bar and select the same-named program from the results.

After launching Netplwiz via the Start menu, you should see a screen that looks like this, with your account(s).

This window gives you access to Windows’ user accounts and many password controls. Right at the top is a checkmark next to the option labeled Users must enter a username and password to use this computer. Uncheck that.

Next, enter your current password. The passwords must match.

When you click Apply it will prompt you for your current password. Enter it twice and you’re finished. The next time you reboot, or your PC wakes up from a nap, you’ll no longer need to type in your password.

If, for some reason, you enter the wrong password, upon rebooting you’ll probably see an error message, then this odd screen where you’ll have not one but two accounts to choose from. They’re both identical, but you’ll still have to log in with a PIN or (gulp!) password.

Oddly, there’s no mechanism within Netplwiz to actually check the accuracy of the password; as long as they match, Windows is happy. If you manage to type the incorrect password the same way, twice, you’ll see an error message when you reboot. Windows will then show two accounts, both identical, that will require you to log in again. Once you do, just go back to Netplwiz and enter the password correctly.

In an earlier version of this story, a reader pointed out that this technique didn’t work with his Lenovo PC—though a Lenovo tech-support representative said it would. We checked this ourselves on a Lenovo PC recently and it definitely does work. (Keep in mind that if your PC is owned by an employer, your company’s administrator may enforce a password using Windows’ group policy editor, and this trick may not work or may be inaccessible to you.)

If you have one user account on your computer, signing in automatically is a better option than removing your password. However, you must know that this method has a security risk as well. For instance, anyone can walk up to your computer and access the desktop. Keep in mind that when you enable this feature, anyone with admin access can acquire your account passwords.   1. Press Windows Key on your keyboard, then type “netplwiz” (no quotes). Press Enter to open the User Accounts window.
  2. Deselect the ‘Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer’ option.
  3. Click OK to save the changes you made.

Step 1. Download and launch the software on any computer you can access. Insert a blank CD/DVD/USB flash drive into your computer, select it in the software, and click on the Burn button.

For versions of Windows 10 earlier than 1803, local account passwords can’t be reset because there are no security questions. You can reset your device to choose a new password, however this option will permanently delete your data, programs, and settings. If you’ve backed up your files you’ll be able to restore your deleted files. For more information, see Recovery options in Windows.

Press the Shift key while you select the Power button > Restart in the lower-right corner of the screen.

FYI, I just encountered a case where a credential (possibly corrupt, since it showed up under an entry named with only two, odd Unicode characters) appeared only in the rundll32.exe keymgr.dll,KRShowKeyMgr interface, and not in the Credential Manager interface found in the Windows 7 control panel. So it may be worth checking both interfaces for cached credentials.

PC users miss out on many features available while using a local account. For instance, sync and Find my PC features are available only when you sign in with a Microsoft account. For some reason, many users still prefer to use a local user account.

While using a local user account, you might want to change or remove the account password. Sadly, the Settings app although it allows users to create a local user account, it does not yet support changing or removing local user account password.

Because the Settings app does not allow us to change or remove the local account password, we have no option but to use the Control Panel to change or remove the local user account password.

Change, edit or remove local account password in Windows 10

  2. Click the “Windows Credentials” tab near the top.

Windows operating system allows you password protect your user account for obvious reasons. While we always recommend users to use a strong password for a user account, there are users who want to have a password-free user account.

If you have set a BIOS/UEFI password or don’t let other use your Windows 10 PC, you can remove your user account password if you find it troublesome entering the password each time to sign-in to Windows.

Removing user account password is quite easy although Windows 10 doesn’t display a remove password option in Settings. All you need to is set a blank password while changing the user account password to remove password of a user account.

NOTE: You cannot remove the password of your Microsoft account. This method is only for local user accounts and not for Microsoft accounts.   1. Use Windows-I to open the Settings application.

Microsoft notes that there is no other way to reset the password; users have to Reset the PC and delete all data on it to restore it (if they don’t have access to another account that is).

There is another option though as outlined by Professor Robert McMillen on YouTube.

The classic renaming of cmd.exe to utilman.exe does not work directly anymore in new versions of Windows.

Before the latest feature update of Windows 10, Windows 10 version 1809, users could boot into the recovery environment, replace utilman.exe with cmd.exe, and click on the “ease of access” button to spawn a command prompt window to change the user password.

In newer versions of Windows, extra steps are required. Here is the entire process:

Begin by holding down the Windows button and the ‘R’ button together on your keyboard to launch the Run Window.

Now type ‘regedit’ in the text box of the run window and then press enter to launch the Registry Editor window.

Now right click on the right side of the window on an empty space inside the Personalization folder and then select New->DWORD (32-bit) Value.

Now just right click on the newly created value and then rename it as NoLockScreen. This way it would be easy to remember in the future when you want to come back again and change this setting.

Step 8:

Finally, double click on the newly created NoLockScreen value and a pop up window will be opened. Here, just change the Value data inside the text box from 0 to 1 and then hit ok to continue.

But the process differs based on whether you use a Microsoft Account or a local account. At the Windows 10 login screen, click the link for I Forgot My Password (Figure A).

At the screen to Recover Your Account, type the email address for your Microsoft Account if it doesn’t already appear and then type the CAPTCHA characters you see on the screen. Click Next (Figure B).

At the screen to Verify Your Identity, choose how you want to receive a code to confirm who you are. You can opt to receive it via an email to your primary address or by a text to your mobile phone, both of which you should have set up when you created your Microsoft Account. Choose the option you wish and then click the button to Send Code (Figure C).

Check your email or mobile phone for the code. At the next screen, enter that code. Click Next. At the next screen to Reset Your Password, type a new password for your Microsoft Account. Click Next (Figure D).

The next screen tells you that your password has been changed successfully. Click Next. You’re returned to the Windows 10 login screen where you can enter your new password to sign in (Figure E).

You can also reset your Microsoft Account password from Microsoft’s website, which is a handy option if you don’t have access to your Windows 10 device or need to sign into your account on the web. Browse to the Microsoft Account website. Click the Sign In button. At the Sign In window, type your email address. Click Next. At the password window, click the link for Forgot My Password. At the window to Recover Your Account, type the CAPTCHA characters you see. Click Next.

Now, you would choose the option to receive the code by email or text message, but we’ll take a different approach. Let’s say your email isn’t accessible, or the digits displayed for your mobile phone number are incorrect. Instead, click the option for I Don’t Have Any Of These (Figure F).

At the Recover Your Account screen, enter a different email address that you use. Click Next. Check your email for that code and enter it in the next field. Click Verify. Now, Microsoft tries to verify your identity. At the Account Recovery screen, enter the requested contact information. Click Next. At the next screen, enter any previous passwords you’ve used for this account and then respond to the other questions. Click Next. At the next screen, enter the email addresses of any contacts to whom you’ve sent messages. Click Next. Microsoft will now send a message to your alternate email address to let you know if you’ve provided enough information to confirm your identity. If so, that email will contain a link you can click to reset your password (Figure G).

How to reset the password for your local account

Let’s say you use a local account on one of your Windows 10 computers, and you want to make sure you can reset it if you ever forget it. Sign into Windows. Open Settings. Select Accounts and click the setting for Sign-in Options. At the Sign-in Options screen, click the link to Update Your Security Questions (Figure H).

Type your password. Choose the three security questions from each field and type the answers for each one. Click Finish (Figure I).
