How to sell your mac

Macs are expensive, but they have a higher secondhand value than PCs. Here’s how to sell your Mac hardware, whether you’re upgrading to a new Mac or you just want some cash for old MacBooks you have lying around.

Back Up and Delete Your Old Data

How to sell your mac

It’s obviously not a great idea to sell a device with all of your personal information stored on it. The first thing you’ll need to do is get rid of all of that data and reset your Mac back to factory settings, to protect yourself and also make it easier to set up as a new computer.

You’ll probably want to keep a copy of your data somehow. If you’ve just bought a new Mac, you can migrate your data from your old one to the new one. If you want to start fresh, or are switching to a Windows machine, you can keep a backup of your files in case you need them in the future.

Next, you’ll want to wipe your Mac’s hard drive. You can read our guide on how to do this from Recovery Mode, which shouldn’t take more than an hour or so depending on how much data you have and how securely you want to wipe your hard drive. Afterward, you’ll probably want to reinstall macOS, or else it won’t be usable to whoever you sell it to.

Find Your Specs

Apple releases new Macbooks nearly every year and usually has a dozen models for each launch. You’ll want to find out exactly which one you have to make an accurate listing.

If you know the year your laptop was made (not purchased), you can look it up on Apple’s tech specs database to get a full listing that you can link to. Otherwise, you can click on the Apple logo in the top menu bar and select “About this Mac.”

How to sell your mac

This will open up a dialog which will list out all of your computer’s specifications.

How to sell your mac

The main things you’ll want to note are the model name (e.g., “MacBook Pro”), the year it was made, the screen size, and the amount of RAM your system has. If you paid for a processor upgrade in your Mac, be sure to list that as well.

Option 1: Sell it Yourself for More Money

If you like money and have time to spare, selling it yourself is the way to go. In general, you won’t get close to retail price for your Mac, even if it’s in mint condition. Buying used comes with a discount, and it has to be significant enough for people to consider. You should look up how much your particular device is selling for on these websites and list yours at or below that price point.

Make sure your Mac is clean, and take good pictures of it for your listing. Make sure to include all relevant information in the listing. You should also include a link to the product’s retail page so buyers can both see how much of a discount they’re getting and view more specs of the machine.

Note: there are plenty of electronic scrap businesses out there claiming to buy your devices for top dollar only to offer you well below market value. You’ll have to wade your way through a sea of scams and stick to trusted sources.

Selling Online vs. Selling Locally

You have two options: sell it online (and ship it to the buyer) or sell it locally. If you’re selling online, you’ll be competing with resellers, official vendors, and thousands of other people looking to make a quick buck. It can be much easier but also leaves you prone to return scams when the service takes the side of the buyer.

Selling locally gets a bad reputation, but it’s quite safe if you know what you’re doing. The basic rules to avoid being scammed are:

  • Meet in a busy public place, so you don’t get mugged or robbed. You can even meet at a police station if you’re paranoid.
  • Do not ship the item. This is a scam—you’re selling locally for a reason. Always meet in person.
  • Cash only. Anything else is likely a scam. Scammers can commit check fraud, writing you a check that appears to deposit correctly at first only to bounce.
  • You’ll likely get a few responses that sound like robots repeating your full post title. Don’t bother responding to these; they’re scams.

Use some common sense, and don’t trust people asking more than they should of you. There are plenty of scammers out there, but once you get past those meeting someone in person is the only way to ensure everything goes down smoothly.

Local Options

Craigslist is a very good site for selling your old electronics to interested buyers. Despite it being a local marketplace, as long as you don’t live in the middle of nowhere, you’ll find people looking to get a deal on used devices or prospective resellers looking to take it off your hands.

Facebook Marketplace is like Craigslist, except a bit less underground and sketchy. If you’re afraid of Craigslist, post your listing here.

LetGo and Offerup are two honorable mentions.

Online Options

eBay is the go-to option for selling used goods online.

Amazon, generally used by more permanent vendors, also allows you to list your own products much like eBay

Swappa: like eBay, easier to use, smaller user base.

Option 2: Trade it in For Quick Cash

If you can’t be bothered creating a listing or selling your machine, you can trade it in for store credit (and sometimes cash). Apple has its own trade-in program that’s much faster and easier than selling it yourself. Of course, they’ll only give you gift cards to buy new Apple products, but if you’re looking to upgrade, you can sell your old devices to finance your new ones.

This process is only really worth it if your computer is in good shape. Apple offered us $490 for a 2015 13″ MacBook Pro, which is below the $800 or so that you may get selling it on a site like Craigslist. However, if your device has a lot of scratches, or is generally damaged, you won’t get close to that amount. Apple would only give us $160 for a scratched up MacBook—an abysmally small sum—limiting us to the accessory bin at the Apple Store.

You can sell it to other trade-in programs, like Best Buy, but in our testing, they offered less than Apple did. Gazelle offers similar amounts, but at least pays in cash. You could try your luck at a local pawn shop if you’re seriously strapped for cash, but however you trade it in, you’ll always get less money than if you were to sell it yourself.

We recommend putting a listing up on Craigslist or Facebook for a few weeks, and then resorting to a trade-in if it doesn’t sell. The best use case of these trade-in programs is if you’re the kind of person who buys a new iPhone every year, but in that case, you can just use the iPhone Upgrade Program.

Looking to trade up to a newer model? Here’s how to maximize what you get for your old one.

Rick Broida is the author of numerous books and thousands of reviews, features and blog posts. He writes CNET’s popular Cheapskate blog and co-hosts Protocol 1: A Travelers Podcast (about the TV show Travelers). He lives in Michigan, where he previously owned two escape rooms (chronicled in the ebook “I Was a Middle-Aged Zombie”).

Matt Elliott, a technology writer for more than a decade, is a PC tester and Mac user based in New Hampshire.

Whenever Apple trots out new hardware — as it did most recently with the new 13-inch MacBook Pro earlier this month — it’s only natural to look at your old hardware and think, “Time for an upgrade!” Just one problem: You’re not made of money. And you already sank a hefty chunk of it into your current MacBook.

So what’s an upgrade-hungry user to do? Simple: Sell that old machine to help subsidize the new one.

Of course, when you do that, you’ll want to squeeze every last dollar out of it, to get the absolute best trade-in deal you possibly can. Here’s your handy guide to doing exactly that. This story is updated periodically to keep it current.

Know your hardware

Before you can figure out how much your MacBook is worth, you need to know exactly which MacBook you have. You can find the model number on the bottom of the system or, if it’s handy, the box it came in. Either way, that number will reveal most of the key specs about the system: processor speed, RAM, storage and even color name.

For example, if it’s a MacBook MJLQ2LL/A, you’ll know it has a 2.2GHz Core i7 processor, 15.4-inch display and 256GB solid-state drive. Head to Apple’s Tech Specs page to get the full details regarding your model, or just peruse this list of MacBook Pro models.

Now that you know exactly what you’re selling, you have two main options for selling it.

Option 1: Sell it yourself

As with selling your car, you’ll most likely get the most money if you sell your used MacBook yourself. And there are three effective ways to do that:

Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace

The venerable free want-ad site Craigslist makes it pretty easy to create a listing — just write up the details, add some photos and you’re done.

Now for the downside: A MacBook is a big-ticket item, and that greatly increases your risk of getting ripped off or mugged or worse . Think about it: Do you really want to meet a stranger in a parking lot and hand over your MacBook in exchange for a big wad of cash? The current coronavirus pandemic only complicates such an in-person transaction .

If you do decide to try this option, at least make sure to meet your buyer in a well-lit, public place. (Some police departments offer their parking lots as transaction sites .) Make sure to be completely honest about the condition of your hardware so the buyer doesn’t feel surprised or taken advantage of.

Then there’s Facebook Marketplace , which operates very similarly to Craigslist, with one key difference: It’s linked to your Facebook account, so there’s less anonymity. (It also has a snazzier interface, if that matters.)

Selling an old MacBook is one way to pocket some extra cash.

It takes more work, but eBay is definitely the safer way to sell a used MacBook than Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. It also exposes you to a much wider audience of potential buyers, meaning you might fetch a higher price — though you also have a lot more competing sellers as well.

The cost of creating an eBay listing is quite low, but the company takes a hefty 10% of the final selling price. And if you accept payment through PayPal, you’ll be charged an additional fee of 2.9% (3.9% if sold internationally) of the final value.

You’ll need to decide whether to auction off your MacBook or set a Buy It Now price. The latter can help you make the sale more quickly, and it also gives you greater control over what you’ll make. Best bet: Check the Buy It Now prices that others have set for your same model, then undercut them by a few bucks.

Just be sure to take note of eBay’s buyer and seller protection policies, which tend to favor the buyer in the event that, say, your MacBook won’t boot or arrives with a cracked screen. In other words, sellers need to do their homework, too.

Option 2: Trade it in

Apple has a trade-in program for many of its products, including MacBooks. Plug in the details of your machine and you can get money for it in the form of an Apple Store Gift Card or a credit toward your next purchase. To give you an example, my MacBook Pro with a 13-inch display and Touch Bar from 2016 that’s in fine working order would fetch me $520. If Apple determines your ancient MacBook holds no value, it’ll let you recycle it for free.

Trading in your MacBook to a store or to Apple itself could let you recoup some money from an older laptop.

You can mail in your MacBook or bring it to an Apple Store to trade in or recycle it, but it’s unclear how in-person trade-ins will work as Apple begins to reopen its retail stores . You can stay home and use Apple’s online service to get a quote and complete the trade-in, however, or call your local Apple Store for more details.

Apple’s not the only trade-in option. Best Buy accepts used MacBooks in its trade-in program , although you’ll need to mail in your machine because Best Buy has temporarily suspended in-store trade-ins due to the coronavirus outbreak. I entered the details for my 4-year-old MacBook Pro on Best Buy’s site and was told it’s worth $461 — not a small sum but still $59 less than Apple’s quote.

If you prefer cash as opposed to credit, check out sites like BuyBackWorld , Gazelle and ItsWorthMore — they will pay for your MacBook via check, PayPal or Zelle. But the process can be a little time-consuming, because you have to ship your system and wait for it to be evaluated. And if the company finds any problems with it, you may get less money than you were originally quoted.

To prepare your Mac for a new owner, use these steps restore it to factory settings.

Should you use these steps?

If you’ve upgraded to macOS Monterey on a Mac with Apple silicon or a Mac with the Apple T2 Security Chip, follow the steps to erase all content and settings instead of the steps in this article.

For any other Mac or macOS, follow the steps below.

Back up or transfer your files

Use an external storage device to back up your files, or use Migration Assistant to move your files to your new Mac.

Sign out of iTunes

If using macOS Catalina or later, you can skip this step.

Open iTunes. From the menu bar at the top of the screen or iTunes window, choose Account > Authorizations > Deauthorize This Computer. Then enter your Apple ID and password and click Deauthorize. Learn more about deauthorizing.

Sign out of iCloud

If using macOS Catalina or later, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Apple ID. Select Overview in the sidebar, then click Sign Out.

If using an earlier version of macOS, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, click iCloud, then click Sign Out.

You will be asked whether to keep a copy of your iCloud data on this Mac. You can keep a copy, because you’re erasing your Mac later. Your iCloud data remains in iCloud and on any other devices that are signed in to iCloud with your Apple ID.

Sign out of iMessage

Open the Messages app, then choose Messages > Preferences from the menu bar. Click iMessage, then click Sign Out.

Optional: Unpair Bluetooth devices that you’re keeping

If your Mac is paired with a Bluetooth keyboard, mouse, trackpad, or other device that you plan to keep, you can unpair it. This optional step prevents accidental input when the Mac and device have separate owners but remain in Bluetooth range. If you do this on a Mac that doesn’t have a built-in keyboard or trackpad, you will need to plug in a USB keyboard and mouse to complete the remaining steps.

To unpair a Bluetooth device, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Bluetooth. Move your pointer over the device that you want to unpair, then click the remove (x) button next to the device name.

Erase your Mac and reinstall macOS

After macOS installation is complete, your Mac restarts to a setup assistant. Press Command-Q to shut down instead of continuing setup.

Reset NVRAM and shut down

Turn on your Mac and immediately press and hold these four keys together: Option, Command, P, and R. Release the keys after about 20 seconds. This clears user settings from memory and restores certain security features that might have been altered. Learn more about resetting NVRAM .

After resetting NVRAM, your Mac starts up to the setup assistant again. To leave the Mac in an out-of-box state, press Command-Q to shut down instead of continuing setup.

No matter the model or condition, we can turn your device into something good for you and good for the planet: Learn how to trade in or recycle your Mac with Apple Trade In.

Macs hold their value in the second user market very strongly compared to competing platforms. These are the steps you should take to prepare a Mac for sale.

Before you begin, you need an idea of the potential value of the Mac you want to sell. Look at similar models on eBay and use Mac2Sell’s online quotation site to help.

Typically you’ll clean up the exterior of your Mac, but you should also securely delete your data from your system, which means restoring it to factory settings.

Follow these seven steps:

Stop

Before you delete your data you should back your existing information up. Time Machine users should have this backed up already, but it still makes sense to create an additional bootable clone of your Mac.

To achieve this use Carbon Copy Cloner ($39.95) or SuperDuper ($27.95) to create a complete copy of the contents of your Mac on an external hard drive. You will be able to boot up this clone as and when you need any of the data the Mac you are selling contains. Then move to the next step.

iTunes users should remember to de-authorize iTunes before selling their systems. This is because you can only have five systems linked to your account.

On the Mac you intend selling launch iTunes and select Store>Deauthorize This Computer. You will be asked for your Apple ID and password to complete this process. You can use the Deauthorize All Systems command within your iTunes account if you forget this step, but will then need to set all your existing Macs up all over again.

FileVault

Some Mac techs advise you check the status of FileVault encryption on a drive you intend to sell. Launch System Preferences and select Security & privacy>FileVault. If FileVault is not turned off on your Mac then click the padlock, enter your password to unlock the preferences and turn it off.

iCloud

Most Mac users run iCloud, Apple’s system that keeps your contacts and other information synced between your Mac and iOS devices. If you are selling your Mac, then sign out of your account in the iCloud section of System Preferences, using the Delete from Mac command to remove all your synced data from your Mac.

Recovery

Restart your system while holding down the Command and R keys until the Recovery Mode Utilities window shows up on the display. You will be using its tools to erase your drive.

Erasure

Launch Disk Utility in Recovery Mode and choose your Startup Disk in the left hand sidebar. Once you’ve selected the correct disk click the Erase button. While it takes longer, it’s advisable to use the Security Zero Data One-Pass option, as it cleans your Mac most effectively. However, both commands will erase the data on your drive. This means that data will not be easily recoverable, which is why we recommend cloning the drive in step one. When the deletion process is complete, exit Disk Utility.

System, system

You now have a Mac with no easily accessible data — not even an OS. You should reinstall the operating system for the next owner.

  • When you exit Disk Utility select Reinstall OS X.
  • In Recovery Mode your Mac will download and install a fresh copy of OS X Mavericks.
  • When installation is complete you will be asked for your Apple ID and password: don’t enter this information — let the next owner use their own credentials to take complete control of their new Mac.

Following these steps will ensure you leave no personal data on any Mac you sell.

Simply select the make, model, and condition of your Mac, and you’ll receive an instant quote.

The quote will be valid for 28 days, allowing you time to find a replacement. Plus, you’re guaranteed to have the first price they offer or you can request your item back for free.

Once you’ve completed your order, find a box and pack your Mac. It doesn’t need to be the original retail box, just as long as it keeps your item safe during transit.

You’ll then receive a welcome pack with a free shipping label once you’ve completed your order. Print this out and tape it to your box and you’re ready to go. Shipping is free.

A few days after Declutter has received your order, they’ll send payment—not quite as quickly as the other sites on this list, so that’s something to keep in mind.

5. Swappa

Swappa is another popular website to resell you used Mac. Swappa has a huge selection of Mac devices listed for sale on their website by other owners, and they make it easy for you to select the exact model that you want to sell.

Swappa prides itself on giving you the exact amount they quote for your MacBook. And you’ll get paid instantly as soon as your laptop sells rather than waiting over a week or a longer period for a check.

There’s no fees to sell with Swappa as the buyer pays a small percentage to the website to cover any costs.

Ways Maximize Your Mac’s Value

Before you hand over your Mac to any one of the above sites, there are some factors to consider to improve its condition and overall value.

Clean it

Your Mac’s appearance can have a huge impact on its value. Use an alcohol-free cleanser and a microfiber cloth to clean the screen, case, keyboard, and trackpad. This will make it more attractive and far more desirable to sellers.

Know Exactly What You’re Selling

This sounds obvious, but making some small mistakes on specifications can damage the Mac’s value. Many of the best websites to sell your Mac make this process simple by selecting the exact make and model number on the navigation center.

Make sure to check the correct model number on the bottom of your device. Making an error when choosing the model can cost you (potentially) hundreds of dollars.

Use the Original Box

For some buyers, it makes a huge difference when you can offer your Mac in its original box. Not only will this keep it safe during transit but it’ll enhance its legitimacy to buyers.

Create a Backup

Finally, you’ll need to restore your Mac to factory mode before letting go of it. Before you do that, make sure that you have a current backup of your important files and sign out of everything—including iTunes, iCloud, etc.

From the menu bar at the top of the iTunes window, select Account. Then, choose Authorizations and select Deauthorize This Computer. Click Deauthorize.

Summary

Make sure you do the prep work to get your Mac ready to sell for top dollar. The sites listed above are a great reference to get started. Sites like SellCell offer a one stop shop to compare best rates and save you time.

No matter where you sell your Mac, remember they are a high demand items so do your research to get top dollar.

I’m getting rid of my MacBook. It’s nothing personal; I have to swap out my G/O Media-owned device for another, slightly slower MacBook. It’s an annoying process, but it doesn’t take a lot of time. In fact, it probably took me more time to come up with the “checklist of things I should do before you get rid of your MacBook” than to do the actual work.

And now, Lifehacker readers, I impart that knowledge to you. Regardless of the reason, there will one day come a time when you’ll be looking to get rid of your MacBook. When you do, there are a few things you’ll want to do to your trusty laptop before you send it off into the sunset—to ensure data security, a smooth transition, and no hiccups for whoever owns it next (unless it’s going right into the recycling bin ).

Turn off FileVault

If you’ve been using FileVault, your Mac’s handy full-disk encryption feature, you’ve been living life secure and happy. However, now that you’re getting rid of your MacBook, it’s time to turn this off. It sounds like the exact opposite of what you’d want to do, I know, but you’ll be wiping your drive and reinstalling a fresh copy of macOS. Disabling FileVault will ensure this process goes smoothly—and it’s a good step to take if you’re looking to reset your Mac back to “ factory default ” settings.

Click on the Apple logo in the upper-left corner of your MacBook and click on System Preferences. From there, click on Security & Privacy, and then the FileVault tab, to turn the feature off. Depending on the speed of your MacBook and how much data you have, the decryption process could take anywhere from tens of minutes to a few hours.

Before selling, gifting, or recycling a Mac, you’ll want to take a number of steps to properly prepare it. Here’s how.

Whether you have your eye on a new M1 Mac or you just want to get rid of an old macOS device in an environmentally responsible way, it’s important to properly sign out of certain services and delete your old data before doing so.

The process is fairly straightforward but may take some time, so be sure to budget some time to preparing your Mac before getting rid of it. Also, these steps only apply to Intel-based Macs, since a couple of steps are a bit different on Apple Silicon machines.

With both of those things in mind, here’s how to prepare your Mac device before you get rid of it.

Step one: Back up your Mac

How to sell your mac

If you’re planning on selling, regifting, or recycling your Mac device, it’s likely that you’ve already thought about the data stored on it. If you haven’t, let this be a reminder.

Preparing a Mac for transfer to a new owner should involve deleting all the data on it for both security and privacy reasons. If you don’t want to lose that data forever, you’ll need to back up your device before you proceed to any additional steps.

The simplest method of backing up your Mac is using Apple’s built-in Time Machine feature. There are other options to consider, and more information is available here.

Sign out of your services

How to sell your mac

Erasing your Mac will typically ensure that your data stays in your own hands. But, depending on the version of macOS that the Mac is running, there are a few additional steps you may want to take.

If you’re on OS X Mountain Lion or earlier, then it’s a good practice to sign out of iMessage. Here’s how.

  1. Open the iMessage app on your Mac.
  2. Choose Messages from the top menu bar, and then select Preferences.
  3. In this menu, click on iMessage.
  4. Finally, click Sign Out.

If you plan on transferring a device running macOS Mojave or earlier, then you’ll want to sign out of iTunes, too.

  1. Open iTunes.
  2. In the iTunes window, select Account and Authorizations.
  3. From that drop down menu, select Deauthorize this Computer.
  4. You’ll be prompted to enter your Apple ID account credentials and password.
  5. Once you do, hit Deauthorize.

Finally, it’s a good idea to sign out of iCloud on any Mac device before you go about erasing the drive.

In macOS Catalina and macOS Big Sur, this is done by clicking on the Apple icon in the top menu bar, then navigating to System Preferences > Apple ID. From here, select Overview and then click on the Sign Out button.

It’s a similar but slightly different on macOS Mojave and earlier. Choose the Apple icon in the menu bar, select System Preferences, click iCloud, and then click Sign Out.

You may be asked if you want to keep a copy of the iCloud data on your Mac. It doesn’t really matter one way or the other, since you’ll be erasing your drive and any iCloud data will remain synced to your Apple cloud storage.

A couple of additional steps

How to sell your mac

One step that many people miss is to reset the nonvolatile random-access memory (NVRAM) and parameter RAM (PRAM) before reinstalling macOS.

It’s a best practice, however. Resetting the PRAM will clear certain user settings from your Mac’s memory. It’ll also restore certain deeper-level security features that may have been changed. Here’s how to do it.

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Turn on your Mac and immediately press and hold Option, Command, P and R.
  3. After about 20 seconds, you can release your keys.

You’ll know that the reset worked if you see the Apple logo appear and disappear for a second time on T2-equipped Macs. On older Macs, you’ll hear that signature startup sound.

Do note that resetting the NVRAM and PRAM using this method only works on Intel-based Macs. There’s no option to manually reset NVRAM on Apple Silicon Macs.

In addition to resetting your NVRAM, you may also want to manually unpair any Bluetooth devices from your Mac.

This step isn’t strictly necessary, but it could avoid confusion if you live with the person you’re transferring the Mac to. It could also mitigate any Bluetooth security concerns you may have.

Just navigate to Apple menu > System Preferences > Bluetooth. Hover over the devices you’d like to unpair and click the X icon next to them.

Finally, erase and reinstall macOS.

How to sell your mac

Now that all of that is done, you’re finally ready to erase your Mac’s drive and restore it back to its factory default settings.

There are a number of ways to go about this, but the easiest is to use Disk Utility to format your drive and reinstall macOS.

Here’s how to do it.

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Turn on your Mac and immediately press and Command and R.
  3. You may be prompted to select a user and log in with the password for that account.
  4. From here, you’ll be presented with a utilities window. Select Disk Utility.
  5. Select Macintosh HD from the sidebar.
  6. Click Erase and input a new name and format. For simplicity’s sake, you can leave both to Macintosh HD and APFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
  7. Next, click Erase Volume group. If that isn’t an option, click Erase.
  8. If you have Find My enabled, you’ll be prompted to deactivate it with your Apple ID and password.
  9. You may want to delete any other internal volumes besides Macintosh HD. Just click the minus icon next to each volume.
  10. Finally, quit Disk Utility

Now that your disk has been erased, you can select Reinstall macOS (Version Name) from the utilities window.

Once macOS finishes installing, you’ll likely be faced with a setup assistant. It’s at this point that you should shut down your Mac and leave the setup process to whomever is receiving it.

No need to go anywhere – we will send a courier to you, wherever you are in South Africa. Your Macbook will be safe every step of the way. The couriers take one working day to deliver to us if you are in JHB or PTA. It takes two working days from other major cities, and might take up to five working days if you live on top of a sand dune somewhere in the Kgalagadi.

To keep things simple, and for safety’s sake, we courier the devices to a secure warehouse that is not open to the public.

If you really don’t want to courier your Macbook, and you live in JHB, we can arrange for you to drop your device off at our partner business – Platinum Repairs – in Woodmead. Please contact us beforehand to make arrangements.

We bank with FNB. FNB to FNB payments typically clear immediately. We make payments every work day, at 4 pm.

Payments to other banks may take one to two working days to clear. You could also use the money we would have paid you right away as credit on EpicDeals.co.za , if you wanted to buy another device.

There’s some bad behaviour that goes on in our industry – offers are inflated and then when they receive your device they might tell you “the market price suddenly dropped” or “do you see this tiny scratch? That halves the value of your device”.

Select your MacBook model to sell

How to sell your mac

How to sell your mac

How to sell your mac

It’s important to get your MacBook model correct prior to selling it as prices between different MacBook models can very significantly.

Your MacBook model information can be found by doing the following:

  1. Choose “About This Mac” from the Apple () menu in the upper-left of your screen.
  2. You should now see some information about your laptop, including the model year.

If you couldn’t find your model information by following the above steps, we recommend following the steps above again and noting down your serial number. As an alternative, the serial number can be found on the back of the MacBook or on the original packaging. You can then visit the Apple Check Coverage website, log in with your Apple ID and input your serial number. The model information should appear on the page.

Another alternative is to paste the serial number on the EveryMac.com’s Ultimate Mac Lookup page.

It depends. There’s no one right answer. However, MacBooks hold their value very well and if you’re an experienced seller on eBay or Craigslist, you will likely get the highest value for your MacBook on those platforms. However, they do require more effort from the seller, charge fees, and come with risk of fraud that novice sellers may not know how to protect themselves from.

For those customers, we recommend using a trade-in site such as ItsWorthMore. Trade-in websites leverage their volume discounts and industry know-how to provide a smooth streamlined experience; for a slightly lower payout.

Another alternative is to trade-in your MacBook directly with your big-box retailers or with Apple. These typically offer lowest payouts and often come in a form of a gift card.

Some older MacBooks especially non-functional ones, do not have much of a resale value and you can choose to recycle them. Recycling in an environmentally friendly manner helps keep toxic pollutants, such as lead, out of the environment. Keeping us all healthier and happier!

The best time to sell your MacBook is usually as soon as you can. Trade-in prices for MacBooks rarely trend up so it’s best to prepare your MacBook for sale as soon as you’ve received your replacement and transferred over all your data.

If you’re looking to get the latest MacBook right when it’s released, the best time to trade-in or lock-in an offer would be right before the announcement.

Apple has a very handy step-by-step guide on What to do to before you sell or trade-in your Mac you can reference to ensure you’ve taken all the necessary steps to prepare your MacBook.

The very first step to take is to backup your MacBook with Time Machine. This is really easy to do, and all you need is an external drive or an iCloud account. It will save all your information by backing up your info periodically on whatever drive you pick. You can gain access to your backed up files from your iCloud or external drive. And you can also use Migration Assistant to move your data and files into your new Mac.

Your MacBook could be connected to a external Bluetooth device such as a mouse or keyboard that you want to keep with you. The best thing to do in this case is to unpair it. While this is optional, it is important because it can prevent an accidental input from the new MacBook owners that are still within range.

To unpair a device from Bluetooth:

  1. go to your system preferences
    • from the Apple Menu
  2. click on the device you want to unpair
  3. remove it

The next step is to sign out of iCloud, iMessage, iTunes and remove your passwords. All you have to do is go to the overview to find a sign-out. Depending on your operating system, it might be different but just look for the sign-out.

After signing-out, you can go to your System Preferences and iCloud to check off Find my Mac. When you turn it off, you no longer need to worry about it attached to your iCloud. You have to make sure you sign out of everything, so you don’t have problems later. If you just reset the MacBook without clearing out it will be locked to your account and the buyer will not be able to use it.

This will erase everything, so make sure that you are backed up and signed out of everything. Then you will erase everything and start from scratch.

  1. Restart your computer.
  2. While it is rebooting: press Command+R
    • right when you see the Apple logo
  3. It will take you to the Mac OS utilities.

This is where you erase your hard drive and choose Disk Utility, which is the last option. It is going to let you erase your disk and hard drive. You will lose everything using this option, so be very sure to have files backed up. Let this process complete before you can press Done after seeing the checkmark.

Buying a new computer means you can choose a new OS or restore the one from the Time Machine backup. If you follow the first step of backing up with Time Machine, recovering your files on the new Mac will be easy.

Reinstalling the OS means you have to agree to the terms and conditions. After which, you will choose the disk-like Apple SSD that has already been formatted. Next, you will press install. This will take a little time because it is uploading directly from the internet.

Selling your MacBook may seem like a complicated process. But doing it right from the beginning will save you and your buyer time and work.

Choose the Macbook Pro or Air model you want to sell.

Selling your old Apple MacBook is fast and simple with BuyBackWorld’s Macbook trade in program. Our Apple laptop buyback program provides you with an upfront instant cash buyback price quote, free shipping label, free shipping kit, and super fast cash payment through check or Paypal. You can use the money earned from our Apple trade in program to upgrade to the latest release, pay bills, save it for a rainy day, or spend it on whatever you’d like.

To begin, select the series (Macbook, Macbook Pro, Macbook Air) of your device, then follow the step by step process to select the specs of your Macbook. You can also enter the serial number of your Apple device and the specs should populate automatically. You will need to know the specs such as the screen size, processor speed, release year and hard drive capacity. Then, choose the exact model and condition to receive our buyback price quote for your trade-in. You can also search by model name or model number using the search field above. You’ll be surprised to know that we’ll even buy back broken, water damaged, and cracked laptops as well. Believe it or not, we even buy back old Macbooks dating back to 2006! If you are having difficulty determining the exact model of the Macbook you wish to exchange for cash, please contact our customer service team for assistance. An honest and accurate assessment is very important since a difference in the specs, model, or condition can have a significant impact on the trade in value of your Macbook.

How much is your Macbook worth?

The trade in value of your old Macbook depends on many different factors, such as the model, release year, specs, and condition. The most important specs are the processor type, speed, memory, screen size, and hard drive capacity. Apple computers with larger screens, retina displays, solid state hard drives, and faster processors such as Intel i7 or i9 are typically more valuable. Take good care of your Macbook to earn the highest price quote. Dents, cracks, heavy scratches, blemishes, and defects will cause the value to drop. It is very important that you keep your laptop dry and safe from sources of liquid or spills. Water damaged Macbooks will be evaluated at the poor and broken trade in value, lowering the cash back that you would return from selling your Mac.

To get the most accurate quote, make sure you identify the model and exact specs of your laptop. If your computer powers on, you can find the basic specs by clicking the Apple logo on the home screen and selecting “About This Mac” to reveal the system information. If you are having trouble, don’t hesitate to contact our customer service department and provide your Apple serial number. We can provide you with the correct link to our buyback catalog or provide you with a custom quote to recycle your Macbook for money.

You will receive money for your Macbook exchange within a few business days. A data wipe and full restore will be performed by one of our trained Apple Mac computer technicians. Sell Your MacBook Pro for Cash Selling your used, old, or broken Macbook Pro online is now very easy with our Macbook Pro trade in program. Apple first released the Macbook Pro in early 2006 and marketed this new line as the premium version of the Macbook laptop. The body and design have changed over the years but still feature an aluminum silver body with black keyboard known as the Unibody style. The latest release features a Retina display screen which is available in two different screen sizes: 13″ and 15″. The larger 17″ screen size has since been discontinued by Apple. Apple typically releases a new version of the Macbook Pro every year with upgraded versions of the processor, RAM, hard drive storage capacity, graphics card and screen quality.

Our Macbook Pro trade in program is the only one of its kind that actually allows you to sell your Macbook for cash, not credit, and accepts new, used, or broken models as old as 2006. To receive an upfront price quote for your trade-in, you will need to identify the model and technical specs of the Macbook Pro you wish to exchange for cash. We suggest that you identify the specs of your Macbook by booting your computer, loading the “About this Mac” screen from the Apple Menu, and clicking “More Info.” You should be able to locate the model number and list of hardware specs there. You can also run the serial number of your Mac on Apple’s warranty website to find out the model name and release year. Identifying the correct model, specs, and condition is vital to obtaining an accurate trade in value for your Macbook Pro.

Select excellent if your Macbook is 100% functional and has signs of very minor wear or light use and average if it is 100% functional but has heavier signs of wear, such as scratches on the screen, and dents, deep scratches, scuffs on the body. We will still buy back your Macbook if has water damage, a cracked screen, or other functionality issues, but only for the poor price. Please select poor as the rating if your Mac has any functional defects or heavily damaged parts. If you are happy with the cash trade in value of your Macbook, simply complete the checkout process for your free return mailing kit. If you have a Macbook or laptop that has no value, you can include it in your shipment and we will recycle it for free.

There are six steps for preparing most Mac computers for sale, but if you have a MacBook Pro with Touch Bar, then there’s one additional step to add to your checklist. We’ll go over all of those in this piece.

What to do before selling your Mac

We recommend all of the following steps to prepare most Macs for a new owner:

1. Back up your Mac

By backing up your Mac, you create a snapshot of your computer’s applications, files, and settings so that transferring everything to your new Mac is quick and painless.

Time Machine is the best way to back up your Mac, and we’ve made extensive tutorials on how to use it that should make it easy to back your Mac up.

2. Sign out of iTunes and the App Store

By deauthorizing your computer to use your Apple ID for iTunes (on older macOS versions) and Mac App Store purchases, you free up a device slot on your account and prevent any future discrepancies from occurring.

Curious about how to deauthorize your Mac? Our full tutorial takes you through every step of the way.

3. Sign out of iCloud

Just as it’s essential to deauthorize your Mac for Apple’s digital content stores, you should do the same for iCloud too. These are two separate services provided by Apple. Signing out of iCloud on your computer keeps your Mac’s new owner from accessing your sensitive iCloud data.

To sign out of iCloud on your Mac, follow the steps in this tutorial under the section entitled “How to deactivate your Apple ID account on Mac.”

4. Sign out of iMessage

You should also sign out of iMessage on your Mac if your messaging privacy means anything to you. This step can be deployed on any Mac running Mac OS X Mountain Lion or later.

To sign out of iMessage, follow these steps:

1) Launch the Messages app.

2) Go to Messages → Preferences in the Menu Bar.

3) Click on the Accounts tab and select the account(s) you wish to sign out of.

4) Click on the Sign Out button on the right side of the window:

How to sell your mac

5. Unpair Bluetooth devices

Apple says this step is entirely optional, but we’ll go ahead and recommend it anyway. Unpairing your Bluetooth devices is said to prevent issues where your Bluetooth devices may continue operating with a Mac you’ve previously sold to someone else.

To unpair a Bluetooth device(s), follow these steps:

1) In your Mac’s Menu Bar, go to  → System Preferences → Bluetooth.

2) Locate the Bluetooth device you wish to unpair and click on the X button:

How to sell your mac

3) Next, click on the Remove button to confirm your action.

How to sell your mac

6. Got a MacBook Pro with Touch Bar? – Clear Touch Bar data

MacBook Pro with Touch Bar users should clear the machine’s Touch Bar data before handing their computer to a new owner. The Touch Bar is home to the Touch ID sensor, which authenticates your fingerprint against data stored in your Mac’s secure enclave to perform high-risk system actions.

Apple recommends clearing the Touch Bar data before moving on to the next step. To learn how that’s done, our tutorial walks you through the process.

7. Erase and reinstall macOS

Perhaps the most important thing you can do before donating or selling your Mac is reformat the storage disk and reinstall macOS on it. We have an excellent in-depth tutorial explaining how to do that, but you should only take this measure if you’ve already performed the steps above.

Pro Tip: For added security, use the secure erase feature in Disk Utility when wiping the storage drive. The more passes you make over your previous data, the more secure the erase will be, but it will also take longer.

Once your Mac boots up to the setup screen, your Mac can be handed to its new owner so they can set it up for themselves.

You’re all set!

If you’ve followed all six steps (or seven if you have the MacBook Pro with Touch Bar), then your Mac is ready for the second-hand market.

As a bonus, you might want to give your machine a gentle wipe-down with a microfiber cloth to remove those unsightly sneeze splats from the screen and finger oils from the keyboard.

More than 100 million people around the world now use Macs. People love great hardware, sleek design, and robust MacOs. Unlike their competitors, Apple computers can actually increase in functionality over time thanks to new operating system releases. So although Macs on average are more expensive than PCs, they hold the value better because they stand the test of time. In fact, you can even find ten-year-old Macs that are still supported by the latest macOS release.

How to sell your mac

If you are trying to answer the question “what’s my Mac worth?” then you’ve come to the right place. Here are the key things that will determine how much you can get for used Mac.

What You Should Know Before Selling Your Mac

No matter where you sell your Mac, a few factors will automatically determine the value you can get for. In general, the newer your computer, the more you’ll get for it. Condition is also essential. Everything needs to be in working order. Even minor broken issues can result in much lower resale value. Larger hard drives, amounts of RAM, bigger CPU chips, and more will also drive up the price.

Unless your selling to a private buyer, most places are not going to be interested in any accessories you have. This includes keyboards, mice, and non-Apple screens. However, you can still find places to sell these or recycle them. Let’s take a look in more detail at some of the top factors for price determination.

What Was the Original Configuration?

How to sell your mac

You can clearly expect a Macbook Pro to sell for more than a Macbook. However, configuration and release date matter greatly. For example, there were two 2015 Macbook Pro releases. The early 2015 models, mostly came with an Intel i5 dual-core processor. The mid-year releases came with Intel i5 quad-core processors. This was a significant jump in computing power making the mid-year release much better suited for long term use.

So the first thing you should do is check the “About My Mac” tab to learn exactly what your specs your computer has. Make sure to note the following:

  • Display Size
  • Processor
  • Storage capacity
  • Total RAM and RAM type
  • Display type (LCD, Retina, etc)
  • Video card

Other factors will determine value, but these are the most important.

Is Your Mac Fully Operational?

How to sell your mac

The resale market for Macs is strong because they are such great computers that can last years. If your Mac is in fully working order, you’ll be able to get a better value. Check for the following:

  • Does the device power on with no issue?
  • Can it open and use apps?
  • Does Wi-Fi connection work?
  • Do all other connections like USB, Bluetooth, and ThunderBolt work?
  • Is there any damage to the screen?
  • Is there any damage to the body?
  • Is there water or internal damage?
  • Has the computer been fully restored to factory default conditions?

Depending on your model, some of these factors will be more important than others. Minor scratches on a desktop model that’s otherwise in perfect order should be no issue. However, even small scratches to a MacBook Pro’s display can cost you up to hundreds of dollars.

Is Your Mac Still Under AppleCare or another warranty?

Buying a used electronic is inherently risky. Even if it looks fine and performs all tests with no issue, there’s no guarantee the screen might fall off as soon as you bring it home. That’s why many people prefer buying used Apple computers that are still under Applecare or another type of warranty. This provides an essential layer of security should there be any issues, the buyer can get it repaired with reduced costs along with parts and labor direct from Apple.

Is it Worth it to Get Repairs?

Possibly. You’ll need to weigh out a few different considerations. Even if your computer is under Applecare, it can still be pricey sometimes to get repairs direct from Apple. Before you decide to undertake a repair or not, check the value of your computer. If you only have something minor wrong or can replace something cheaply, it may be worth it if you can get a few extra hundred dollars for your computer. But if it’s expensive or a hassle, skip it.

What is My Mac Worth?

Many factors will determine the value of your Mac. You need to consider age, configuration, and condition. So it’s not quite as simple as figuring out how much you can sell your phone for. Plus, there’s a difference between how much your Mac is worth and how much buyers are willing it to be for it.

If you plan to give away, sell, or trade in your Mac, the first thing you should do is erase the data on it and perform a factory reset. This article shows you how. If you’ve upgraded to macOS Monterey on a Mac with Apple silicon or a Mac with the Apple T2 Security Chip, follow the steps to erase all content and settings instead of following the steps in this article.

How to sell your mac

First, Back Up Your Data

Before you do anything, you should back up the files on your Mac. You could do this manually by copying across files onto an external drive. If you use iCloud, your photos, mail, contacts, documents, and so on should be automatically backed up in cloud storage.

However, we highly recommend that you take the time to perform a Time Machine backup of your system using an external drive. That way, the same backup volume can be used by Apple’s Migration Assistant during a macOS installation to quickly transfer your applications, files and settings from the old Mac to a new one.

Unlink your Apps

There are certain apps that will need to be manually unlinked from your Mac before you say goodbye to it. Some third-party apps require licenses that only work on a limited number of computers, so think about any licenses you may have purchased.

Similarly, you should de-authorize your iTunes account on the Mac, as this removes its access to content that you bought from the iTunes Store, iBooks Store, or App Store, including things like music, movies, TV shows, apps, and books.

To learn how to de-authorize your iTunes account, check out our dedicated guide.

Sign Out of iCloud

It’s also important to disable Find My Mac and sign out of ‌iCloud‌ in macOS. That way you’ll know for sure there isn’t anything lingering on your Mac that links your Apple ID to this machine. The following steps show you how.

Click the Apple () symbol in the top left corner of your Mac’s screen and select System Preferences. .

Click iCloud in the preference pane.

Uncheck all the boxes in the list to remove copies of the related data on this Mac.

  • Click Sign Out.
  • How to Erase and Reset Your Mac

Now that you’ve taken the above precautionary steps and unlinked your purchases and accounts, it’s time to erase your Mac’s drive and reset the system to its factory defaults.

    1. Click the Apple () symbol in the top left corner of your Mac’s screen and select Restart. .
    2. Click Restart.
    3. Hold down the Command and R keys as soon as you hear the Mac tone indicating a reboot.
    4. Wait for the macOS Utilities screen to appear, then click Disk Utility.

  • Choose your Mac’s system drive, usually named Macintosh HD, then click Erase.
  • Select the Format option Mac Extended (Journaled) or APFS.

  • Click Erase, confirm the action if prompted, and wait until formatting is complete.
  • Next, close Disk Utility and click Reinstall macOS.

  • Follow the installation prompts and allow the procedure to continue until you see the Setup Assistant appear.
  • Press the keys Command+Q to shut down your Mac.
  • And that’s it. You’re now ready to sell your Mac, pass it on, set it up as new, or restore a backup.

It is business as usual both ourselves and our couriers continue to be fully operational.

Great service. Beats all other quotes. Direct communication with Andy makes it more a satisfying exchange than the other automated sites. Highly recommended.

I recently sold my iMac 27”, I was offered the best price; not quite as much as selling privately but a lot lot easier. From start to finish, sellusyourapple were completely professional. they arranged a courier to pick up my Mac and confirmed when they had received. It took a couple of days to check it and then I got my money sent straight to my bank. I would completely recommend sellusyourapple if you want to sell your Mac and want the best price without all the hassle.

Initially I was really worried to sell my iMac , however, I contacted Andy and he reassured me. Process was quick and easy and I received the full payment quotes in a timely manner. Andy is very responsive and honest and I would happily do business with this company again!

Great Experience. Excellent and reliable service from Andy who is very responsive. Everything went really smoothly. Very happy with the price I received and speed of transaction. Would definitely use again in the future.

Andy was brilliant. It’s a simple process. You just enter the details of your Apple kit onto the website, submit your email and Andy gets back with a price. He then sends an email either arranging a collection of your kit via DPD or you can opt for your own courier. Pack your kit up and wait for their collection or send yourself. Literally 48 hours later you get the agreed amount paid as long as the kit you sent was as described. It couldn’t be simpler or more slick. Brilliant quick service and can be trusted. Top marks for this startup business and Andy.

Offered me a very fair price for my iMac. Quick and efficient service.
