How to use text-to-speech on discord

While Discord is a great platform for voice communication, you might not be able to (or want to) speak with your own voice. To get around the problem, you can use Discord’s built-in text-to-speech (TTS) feature.

You can use text-to-speech on your own Discord server, or on another server with a text-to-speech enabled channel. These steps only work for Discord users on Windows or Mac, as Discord’s text-to-speech capabilities are unavailable to Android, iPhone, or iPad users.

Enabling Text-to-Speech on a Discord Server

If you want to use text-to-speech on Discord, it’ll first need to be enabled in a channel on your server. If you’re the server owner or administrator, you can do this in your channel settings.

To change your channel settings, access your server in the Discord desktop app or on the Discord website. From the channel listings, hover over a channel name and then click the “Settings” gear icon next to it.

In the “Settings” menu for your channel, select the “Permissions” tab on the left-hand side.

How to use text-to-speech on discord

If you have roles for individual groups of users, select the role from the “Roles/Members” list, otherwise select the “@everyone” option.

A list of available permissions will be shown on the right. Make sure to enable the “Send TTS Messages” option by clicking the green check icon to the right of it.

At the bottom, select “Save Changes” to save the updated role setting.

How to use text-to-speech on discord

Once enabled, users with that role (or every user, if you selected the “@everyone” role) will be able to send text-to-speech messages in the channel you modified.

You’ll need to repeat these steps if you wish to enable text-to-speech in other channels.

Using Text-to-Speech On Discord

If you’re in a channel on Discord with text-to-speech messages enabled, you can send a TTS message by typing /tts in the chat, followed by your message.

For instance, typing /tts hello will activate your browser or device’s text-to-speech capabilities, repeating the word “hello” along with the nickname of the Discord user who sent the message.

The message will also be repeated in the channel as a text message for all users to view.

Muting All Text-to-Speech Messages on Discord

If you aren’t a server owner or administrator, or you just want to mute all text-to-speech messages, you can do so from the Discord user settings menu.

To access this, click the “Settings” gear icon next to your username in the bottom-left corner of the Discord app or website.

In your “User Settings” menu, select the “Text & Images” option on the left. Under the “Text-To-Speech” category on the right, click the slider to disable the “Allow playback and usage of /tts command” option.

How to use text-to-speech on discord

Disabling this setting will disable text-to-speech for you on Discord, regardless of each individual server or channel setting. You’ll be able to read the text element of a text-to-speech message as normal in the channel, but you won’t be able to hear it repeated to you.

You’ll also be prevented from using the /tts command yourself. You’ll need to repeat these steps and reenable the option in your user settings if you wish to use it yourself later.

The text-to-speech function can be a fun way to get your message across in chats. On Discord, you can activate text-to-speech using a simple slash command when typing out your message.

You may, however, have to enable the feature first, depending on your current user settings. And you should be aware that if others have the feature disabled, they won’t be able to hear what you say.

Here’s how to use text-to-speech in Discord through the desktop app for Mac and PC.

How to use text-to-speech on Discord

Before you can use text-to-speech, you’ll need to enable it:

To do this, you’ll need to do two things:

1. Open Discord on your Mac or PC, and then click the gear icon in the bottom-left, near your username.

2. This will open your settings. In the sidebar on the left, click “Notifications.”

3. Scroll down this page until you find “Text-to-Speech Notifications.” Underneath it, click either “For all channels” or “For current selected channel.” The former will make it so you hear every text-to-speech message sent in every server and channel, while the latter will restrict it to the channel you currently have open.

4. Next, click “Text & Images” in the sidebar.

5. Scroll down to “Allow playback & usage of the /tts command” and toggle on the switch next to it.

Text-to-speech is now enabled.

Once enabled, using text-to-speech to hear your own messages read aloud is a simple process:

1. Open Discord and navigate to the channel you want to send a voice message in.

2. Type “/tts” followed by a space, and then your message.

3. Send the message.

You’ll then see the message appear without the slash command. But, at the same time, users in the channel will hear your message read aloud by a voice bot.

If you play online games, have you used its text or voice chat to communicate with your team? How about discussing the game with other people?

I’m sure you did.

But, the problem is, you can only do that while you’re inside the game. Thankfully, we now have Discord, to help you communicate with other gamers, with ease even though you’re not in-game.

For those who don’t know:

Discord is a modern text and voice chat app for gamers out there. It enables users to communicate and discuss with other people online with ease.

It also has tons of features that you can’t find on any other voice chat app. Discord is also a place where you can meet other gamers and discuss your thoughts with them.

Discord has a feature that lets the app read whatever message you send or receive. It is useful when you’re currently in-game or if you want to have a robotic voice.

I’m sure you’re wondering:

How do I enable Text-to-Speech on Discord?

Well, you don’t have to wonder anymore because we are here to help you do that. With this guide, you can enable Text-to-Speech on Discord in just a few minutes.

How to Enable Text-to-Speech on Discord – Android and Windows

Discord is a useful app for gamers to communicate with each other. If you don’t have the app, maybe its time to get it now.

For Windows users, you can download the app by visiting the Discord website. If you’re using an Android phone, click the Google play button below to download it now.

How to use text-to-speech on discord

Without further ado, here is your guide on how to enable Text-to-Speech on Discord.

Method 1: How to Enable Text-to-Speech on Discord – Windows

If you haven’t heard about this feature on Discord, then you’re missing on a lot of things. The Text-to-Speech feature lets the app read notifications and messages, which is useful when you’re currently playing a game.

Although microphones and voice chat are great, not all people have them or prefer to use them. With the Text-to-Speech feature enabled, you can now convert text chats to robotic voice messages that are pretty cool, to be honest.

Now, there are two methods on how to enable or disable the Text-to-Speech feature on Windows, and we will go through them one by one.

Step 1: Notification Settings

1. Go to User Settings.

3. Scroll down and look for Text-to-Speech notifications.

4. Enable Text-to-Speech for all channels or the one you’re currently using.

Step 2: Enable the Text-to-Speech command

Making use of the Text-to-Speech feature is simple on Discord. To do this, add “/tts” before typing the message that you want to say.

Discord has this command enabled automatically, so if it doesn’t work, you might have disabled it accidentally. Follow these steps to enable the Text-to-Speech command quickly.

1. Go to User Settings.

2. Under App Settings, click Text & Images.

3. Look for Text-To-Speech and allow the usage of the “/tts” command.

Method 2: How to Enable Text-to-Speech on Discord – Android

We are sorry to say this, but unfortunately, the Discord app for Android doesn’t offer the Text-to-Speech feature right now. We don’t know the exact reason why, but we hope that the mobile app will have this feature soon.

We tested the app and checked its Notification Settings, but to no avail.

How to use text-to-speech on discord

We also went through the Text & Images Settings but couldn’t find the option for Text-to-Speech.

Typing the “/tts” command before the message also doesn’t work on the mobile app.

How to use text-to-speech on discord

Although the Discord app for Android doesn’t provide the Text-to-Speech feature, it still functions as a modern text and voice chat app. Even without the feature, you can still communicate and talk to other users smoothly without any worry.

What does the Discord app do?

Discord is a modern text and voice chat app designed for gamers. It allows users to communicate with other people throughout the world with ease.
There are tons of servers and channels that you can join where you can share your thoughts and discuss them with other people.

Does the Text-to-Speech feature on Discord work well?

If you don’t mind hearing robotic voice notifications while using your computer, the TTS feature works pretty well. Although it is not perfect, understanding messages through the Text-to-Speech feature isn’t a problem.

Does the Discord app for Android offer a Text-to-Speech feature?

Unfortunately, Discord for Android doesn’t offer Text-to-Speech features. Although that is the case, Discord for mobile still functions as an excellent text and voice chat app for gamers.

To sum it all up

If you’re playing video games for quite some time now, you have probably heard of Discord. Discord is a modern text and voice chat app designed for gamers throughout the world.

It allows users to join different servers and channels to discuss their thoughts with their friends and other people. Discord also has a Text-to-Speech feature that lets a robotic voice read your notifications and messages.

Not all people know about the TTS feature and how to enable it. With the step-by-step guide that we mentioned above, you can now use the Text-to-Speech feature within a few minutes.

Text to speech, abbreviated as TTS, is a form of speech synthesis that converts text into spoken voice output. TTS systems are theoretically capable of “reading” any string of text characters to form original sentences. To put it simply, you type out what you want to say and an automated robot-like voice will speak that text for you.

How to use text-to-speech on discord

TTS was primarily developed to aid the visually impaired. However, when it comes to Discord, I’d say it suits users without microphones or those who may be a bit too nervous to openly speak, perfectly. TTS on Discord is enabled by default and has a couple of ways in which it can be used.

This article is aimed at Discord members who wish to use this feature or those server administrators who would rather see it disabled. After all, it can get annoying very quickly when every text that pops up is read aloud with a robotic tone. In a heavily populated server where everyone is using the feature, could replicate a scene ripped directly out of a Terminator movie.

Beware of Skynet!

But I digress. Let’s get to the task at hand and discuss how to use and disable the Discord text to speech feature.

Enabling & Disabling Text-to-Speech (TTS) On Discord

Using text to speech is insanely simple. Seriously, there isn’t much to it at all. All it requires is that you add /tts before typing out what you want to say. That’s it. Remember that TTS is enabled by default so if this action doesn’t work then it means that the feature has been disabled.

An example sentence would be as follows:

If you want to say, “I’m the greatest!”

You’ll want to type in:

/tts I’m the greatest

Something to keep in mind, which I find pretty cool, is that if you’re using Discord in your browser, the browser that you’ve chosen to use can actually alter the voice in the text to speech. This means that those using the Google Chrome browser will have a different text to speech voice from those who use Mozilla Firefox. This happens based on whichever voice is set to default for those browsers.

Disable Text to Speech

There are two methods you can follow in order to disable the TTS feature if it hits those headache-inducing levels.

1st Method

To toggle the TTS feature off on your Discord server:

  1. Head to the User Settings by clicking on the Cog icon to the right of your user panel.
    • The user panel is found below the channel window.
  2. Next, in the menu to the left, click on “Notifications”.
  3. In the primary window, locate the Text-to-Speech section. It’ll be here that you’ll see three different selections to choose from:
    • For all channels: This setting allows any channel, across any server, to have messages be read in Text-to-Speech, regardless if they use the /tts command or not. You’ll be hearing a fair amount of TTS across all of your channels if you have this enabled. Use with caution!
    • For current selected channel: This setting means the current text channel you have selected will have messages read in Text-to-Speech.
    • Never: No matter how hard your friends try, you won’t ever hear the dulcet tones of the Text-to-Speech bot anywhere within Discord. (Unless you engage it yourself, of course.)
  4. Click the box to the left of Never to place a check mark in it, disabling TTS from being heard on your end.

2nd Method

This method can be used to enable or disable the /tts command. This means that even if you try to use it, unlike the previous method, it will not work for you.

To toggle this feature off or on:

  1. Head to the User Settings by clicking on the Cog icon to the right of your user panel.
    • The user panel is found below the channel window.
  2. Next, in the menu to the left, click on “Text & Images”.
  3. Scroll down the main window until you come to “Text-To-Speech”.
    • From here, you can toggle the switch off or on.
  4. Click the Save Changes button when you’re finished.

Now, the ability to use the /tts command is either enabled or disabled depending on the actions you’ve taken. If you have this option disabled and attempt to use the /tts command followed by what you want to say, the Text-to-Speech bot will not read it aloud.

An important note is that both of these methods are completely separate from one another. This means that the TTS option in “Text & Images” is detached from the option in “Notifications”. If a user has TTS notifications enabled, what was discussed in the 1st Method , other members can still hear your messages written for TTS regardless of your settings. So in the end, you’re really only disabling or enabling the feature for yourself.

Another helpful tip, should the above not work for you or if TTS itself just stops working, you should reach out to Discord support . Fill out the necessary information for the request, submit it, and someone from the Support Team should get back to you as soon as they can.

Text-to-Speech (TTS) in Discord may stop working due to outdated Windows and can also occur if you are using a speaker configuration other then Stereo. TTS may also not work if TTS notifications are set to Never.

Discord (a VoIP app) is used for chatting and is available in desktop and mobile versions. Discord TTS is used to play messages in a chat on the desktop version as TTS does not work on the mobile version of Discord. Discord TTS voice can be changed to different sounds and accents from within the application. But sometimes this TTS function stops working and the user cannot hear TTS bot sounds in a chat.

This is a very common problem in Discord applications and can be fixed using easy workarounds. Before trying any solutions, make sure you are using the updated version of the Discord app.

Disable and Enable Text to Speech in Discord

Discord TTS not working could be the result of a simple communication or software glitch. To rule that out, it will be a good idea to switch off TTS and then turn it back on. This will reset all the temporary settings and configurations stored in the application.

  1. Launch your Discord app.
  2. Click on the Cog icon located to the right of the user panel (just below the channel window) to open the User Settings.
  3. Now select Text & Images.
  4. Now in the right pane of the window, scroll down to the Text to Speech
  5. Now toggle the switch of Allow playback and usage of /tts command to off. How to use text-to-speech on discordTurn Off TTS
  6. Save your changes and exit Discord.
  7. Now re-launch Discord and repeat the above steps to enable TTS in Discord.
  8. Once TTS is turned on, check if TTS in Discord is working fine.

Change the ‘Never’ Option in TTS Notifications

If you have selected Never for Text to Speech notifications, then there will be no sound from TTS bot within Discord. Changing this option may solve your problem to the other two options i.e. For all channels or to For current selected channel may solve the problem. More details are given below:

  1. Open User Settings as opened in solution 1.
  2. Now in the left pane of the window, click on “Notifications”.
  3. In the right pane of the window, head towards the Text-to-SpeechNotifications. Three options will be shown: For all channels, for the currently selected channel, and never.

  • For all channels:Messages of any channel of any server will be played in TTS regardless of TTS command is used or not.
  • For the currently selected channel:Only messages in the current channel will be played in TTS.

Update your System’s Windows to the Latest Build

Windows is frequently updated to fix bugs and improve performance. Maybe the bug you are facing has already been patched in the latest version of Windows. Furthermore, there are numerous cases of Windows version conflicting with the version of Discord installed on your computer. In that case, updating Windows to the latest build may solve the problem.

  1. Close Discord and end its task from the task manager as well (Windows + R and ‘taskmgr’).
  2. Press Windows key and type Update. Then in the search results, select Check for Updates. How to use text-to-speech on discordCheck For Updates in Windows Search Box

  4. If there are updates available, install the updates and then restart your system.
  5. After your system has restarted, launch Discord and check if TTS is operating fine.

Change Speakers Configuration of Your System to Stereo

If you are using a speaker configuration other then Stereo, then TTS will not be able to function. This is known bug in the Discord community. Technically there shouldn’t be any difference, but it seems that this option conflicts with the Discord sound sometimes. In that case, changing your speaker’s configuration to Stereo may solve the problem.

  1. Close Discord.
  2. Press Windows key and type Control Panel. Then in the search results, select Control Panel. How to use text-to-speech on discordOpen Control Panel

How to use text-to-speech on discord

I decided to create a Discord bot to experiment with the library and have some fun while I’m at it. If you don’t know what Discord is, it’s a messaging app primarily used by gamers that can be used to talk and text with people. I use Discord on a daily basis since it makes interacting with friends quick and simple. However, there are some times where I want to socialize without actually having to talk. I prefer to not make too much noise when my parents are busy or I’m just not in the mood for verbal speech. This is why I created a bot that allows you to type in some text and the bot will speak it out to the other users in a voice call. I will show you how I was able to do this.

Before creating the bot, you will have to create a Discord account. Navigate to and you’ll be prompted to create one. Simply enter an email address and a desired password to move on. You should see a New Application button in the top right corner of the page. This marks the birth of your new Discord bot, so give it a name of your choice and click Create.

How to use text-to-speech on discord

How to use text-to-speech on discord

You have created a Discord bot! However, there is some further set up before we can actually get started with coding the Text-to-Speech features. On the left, you want to navigate to the Bot panel.

How to use text-to-speech on discord

Next, click on Add Bot and customize things to your liking. You may change your bot’s profile picture and name, if you choose to do so. Afterwards, navigate to the OAuth2 panel above and scroll down. Select bot and Administrator for convenience.

How to use text-to-speech on discord

We are almost done with the bot setup. Leave this page as it is, open a new tab and enter It’s a good idea to make a testing server for your bot as it acts as a playground where you’re allowed to mistakes in. It’s a poor idea to invite your bot into a preexisting server when you’re still working on it since it can perform actions you don’t want it performing. Go to the right and click on the plus sign to add a server.

How to use text-to-speech on discord

How to use text-to-speech on discord

Once your server is created, you are ready to invite your bot. To invite it, go back to the Discord Developer page and copy the link in the OAuth2 panel.

How to use text-to-speech on discord

Enter this link in a new tab and select the server you just created.

How to use text-to-speech on discord

Click Continue then Authorize and complete to Captcha to finally invite your bot to your server. This completes the bot setup.

Currently, your bot is unable to perform any actions. We’ll have to connect it to discord first. Install the library and copy your bot token from the Discord Developer page. You want to make sure that your bot token is kept secret.

How to use text-to-speech on discord

Now, you can go into your Python IDE and finally connect your bot to discord.

First, you import the libraries needed for your bot. Then you create the bot client which handles events and other actions your bot performs while connected to Discord. The command prefix is a character or phrase that the bot will recognize when a command is run. For example, the bot will respond to $talk since it contains the command prefix. We also tell our bot to print ‘READY’ when it first initializes. Finally, we run the client by pasting in our token from earlier. Running this code will cause our bot to be online.

We are on the final part of the text-to-speech bot. You will want to install FFMpeg and gTTS so the bot can take in input text and output audio.

In order for your bot to output audio in the first place, it will have to join a voice call. We can create a command called join that will join the user that typed the command in a voice call. It checks if the author of the message is in a voice call and will either join or send a message on Discord.

We also want our bot to leave the voice call when it has to. We can create a leave command that will do just that.

Our leave command checks if our bot is disconnected. If it is, the bot is disconnected from the voice channel it’s in. Otherwise, nothing occurs.

To finish up our bot, we need to add the talking command. You will want to import the gTTS library we installed earlier and os.

The above code is the completed bot. The talking command first checks if there is an audio file in our path. This will be the file that plays when our bot is talking. Since we don’t want to make many copies of this file, we delete it if it’s in our PATH. Next, we declare our bot’s voice client and turn an inputted phrase into audio. We save the audio into an mp3 file and play it using our bot’s voice client and FFmpeg.

After lot’s of setting up and coding, we have finally created a working text to speech Discord bot. This is useful for when you can’t speak out loud or just for messing around. I hope you learned something new and thanks for reading.

Voice Assistant is amazing, isn’t it? Guess what, we can create our own voice assistant to support us in our everyday lives. It would not be high-end voice assistance but a combination of basic text-to-speech and speech recognition in Python.

This function keeps track when the engine starts converting text to speech and waits for that much time, and do not allow the engine to close. If we don’t write this code, it may happen that the engine might not work properly as the processes will not be synchronized.

After all the processes are over, we shut down the engine by calling the stop() function.

Change Text-to-Speech Voice In Pyttsx3 Python

We can also change the voice of the engine, default is the voice of a male named David.

To change the voice of the pyttsx3 engine, first, we will have to get the list of objects of voices.

    Exit fullscreen mode

The getProperty() function of the pyttsx3 package takes a string as a parameter and returns an object matching the string.

Since version 1.0, SinusBot has two options for you to use Text-to-Speech. You can either

    • have the bot use an online service to do the speech synthesis or
    • install some libraries from the Chromium project to generate speech on your computer/server

Both come with advantages and disadvantages – using an online service will most likely generate some cost, while using your server to generate voice will consume quite some CPU power.

    Using an online service🔗

To let your bot speak via an online service, you need to register with such a service and get a valid URL (link) that the bot can use to do the actual conversion.

Settings -> Instance Settings has got a field called TTS-Url where you can enter such a URL.

To make this actually work, you have to replace the parameter that contains the text to __TEXT and the locale (if that can be configured via the service) to __LOCALE .

If you are using the locale feature, please also provide the default locale in the appropriate field.

    Afterwards click Save changes .

Hit Alt+S in the bot interface to run a test. If everything was successful, you should hear the bot saying what you entered after a short delay.

Given you have a tts provider that handed you an URL in the form of

you will have to replace the “Test” in the URL with __TEXT and that “en” with __LOCALE , so that it looks like

See the [[|forums]] for a list of providers known to support this kind of URLs.

Installing libraries from the Chromium project🔗

These are basic instructions for Linux. You need at least SinusBot 1.0 for this to work.

    • Download and install the library and the voices

If the last command fails, you probably need to install unzip first. On Debian/Ubuntu this can be done with apt install unzip .

Afterwards, edit your config.ini to contain the following:

You can get the proper settings for the PipelineFile and Prefix parameters from the corresponding .js files. Some voices (those that have files beginning with remote_) need to be downloaded separately first.

The Instances parameter limits the number of concurrent synthesis processes – each of those consumes about 40-100 MB RAM and some CPU cycles. Locale is the locale parameter that is actually used by the bot.

How to use text-to-speech on discord

Bots provide a lot of versatility to discord. You can automate certain tasks using them. For example, imagine a server where voice channels correspond to games. Our bot will join user’s voice channel when user starts playing a game and ask him if he wants to be transferred to the right channel. We will be using node version 8.10.0, Google speech recognition, ffmpeg and discord.js. You can install node 8.10.0 using nvm. Also I recommend using latest Ubuntu OS.

First things first, we want discord API token. There are some tutorials on the Internet on how to get it. Also you will need to add your discord bot user to your discord server. Then create a file named config.json and paste your API token there:

Then create package.json file and add dependencies:

    Create index.js file:

Now we want to test if our bot is set up correctly. Run npm install and npm start and look in your console. There should be message starting with Logged in as and the bot should come online in your discord server. Congratulations! You wrote your first discord bot. But now this bot does nothing so let’s add some functionality. To do this we will need to learn about async functions which will helps us reduce nesting and make our code prettier:

Now try joining a voice channel and then starting a game. The bot should join you and log your presence which includes the name of the game. Also it should detect when you are speaking.

So far so good. Time for some real speech recognition. To do this we will need Google speech API credentials (read the first item in “before you begin” section). Save your credentials in google-credentials.json file in your project folder. After that you can either use dotenv or start your app with

where [PATH] is a full path to your google-credentials.json file.

If you use dotenv then create .env file

in your project folder after installing the package and then add

at the start of your index.js .

Nice. Now let’s try recognizing your beautiful voice. To do this we need one more thing. Discord.js function createPCMStream creates a 16-bit signed PCM, stereo 48KHz stream, but Google speech recognition takes mono input, i.e. 1 channel. So we have to convert 2 channel stream to 1 channel stream. We achieve it by creating a transform stream:

We are ready to implement voice recognition:

Start the bot, join voice channel, start any game and then say something in English. You should see transcription of your words in console. For now we will only be needing words “yes” and “no” to command our bot.

Note here: it may now seem that the bot doesn’t hear you and doesn’t recognize your words. In this github issue they say that discord had (or has) a bug that doesn’t allow for bots to listen to you until you’ve played any sound. So just proceed with the tutorial, we will implement playing sounds before recognition.

The bot is silent right now, we need it to ask user a question:

You can download wrongChannelEn.mp3 or record your own voice line. If the audio is not playing for you then it is probably because of the missing ffmpeg binaries. You can download them here for your system. This link is for Ubuntu x64. Decompress them and put ffmpeg file in your Path , e.g. /usr/bin folder.

The last step is to create a mapping between games and channels and to tell our bot to transfer people to the right channel on “yes”. To copy the voice channel ID use earlier guide. Since I’m using Ubuntu, I will use “Mines” as the game for this demonstration.

Done. Now join a wrong voice channel (not with the ID you specified earlier), fire up “Mines” and tell the bot “yes”. You (and your buddies in the voice channel) should be transferred to the voice channel with the specified ID. If you tell the bot “no”, it just leaves the voice channel with sadness on his metal face. Final version of the code is available via this gist.

In this tutorial I demonstrated a simplified version of EzBot, a bot we developed specifically for our discord server. It is open source and is under ISC license (use however you want). You can find it on my github. It requires MongoDB, has useful commands, internationalization (only EN/RU currently), sends new users welcome messages and also has a feature to assign people their roles using emote dashboard. This project was created in collaboration with my friend MrPhoenix.

Hello. Welcome, to Text-To-Speech the online text into an audio converter program

TikTok has changed the text-to-speech voice following a lawsuit from the original voice actor—and users are making the most of the opportunity by pranking their followers.

The original voice used in the text-to-speech belonged to voice actor Bev Standing, who recently sued TikTok for using her voice without her permission.

Now, TikTok users using the text-to-speech function will hear a different woman’s voice—and they’re not all fans of the change. The new voice has been compared to the voice of the Grammarly commercials and Barbie, and TikTok users say she has a Valley Girl accent.

However, many TikTok users have made the most of the change by pretending that their text-to-speech voice has been modified to something else entirely.

TikTok user @sadradgirl made a video with a Nicki Minaj voice, making the rapper say: “Bestie. why is my f****** text-to-speech miss Nicki? I have no idea how to change it hahaha what the hell is happening why won’t it change back to normal?”

The voice then reads out lyrics from “Bang Bang” by Minaj, Ariana Grande, and Jessie J: “If they test me they sorry, pull up in this Ferrari,” before adding, “Anyway sis, I’m confused as f***.”

Unfortunately, @sadradgirl was simply pranking her viewers, and TikTok has not changed the voice to sound like the rapper. So how did the TikTok user change her voiceover to Nicki Minaj?

How to change the text-to-speech voice on TikTok

TikTok users are changing the text-to-speech voice using software called allows users to type in the text they want to use before selecting one of the dozens of character voices.

Sadly, they’ve removed Nicki Minaj’s voice, but there are still plenty of options ranging from rappers like Jay-Z and Kanye West to characters like Shrek and SpongeBob SquarePants.

    • TikTok Users Hate the New Text-to-Speech Voice
    • Why TikTokers Are Lip-Syncing to Angela Simpson’s Murder Confession
    • TikTok Party ‘Adrian’s Kickback’ Brings Chaotic Scenes to Huntington Beach

To change the TikTok voice to a fun character, first, head to on your phone and sign into Discord. You will need to create a Discord account if you do not already have one.

Select the voice of your chosen character—there are plenty of options from TV shows such as The Simpsons, South Park, and more.

Simply select your chosen character and then enter your text in the box below and press “synthesize.”

Screen record the character speaking and upload the video to TikTok privately. Once the video has been uploaded, select the video’s sound and film a new video using this sound.

Add the aforementioned text to the new video as you would normally and it will appear as though a character is reading it out rather than the default voice.

How to use text-to-speech on discord

Discord is an excellent app to use if you need to connect with various people, whether family, fellow gamers, friends, or foes.

There are generally three ways to direct message them: through a server, a channel, or a DM (direct messages). The following article will show you how you can enable direct messages on Discord and manipulate some privacy settings while you’re at it—so that it’s safe for everyone!

    Safe messaging on Discord

If you’re someone who uses Discord for school or work purposes, you might not want to change any settings. But the following method is highly recommended to anyone who is a part of large servers, channels, or actively chatting with users with whom they are not familiar. And there’s no harm in doing that!

Safe Messaging on Discord adds a layer of protection to your DMs, so you don’t have to worry about receiving unwanted messages and/or pictures. There are essentially three levels of protection Discord offers:

    • Keep me safe: This is the best option for anyone who qualifies for the criteria mentioned above. This setting will allow Discord to scan all photos that a person sends you, no matter who they are or whether you have them added as a friend or not.
    • My friends are nice: This is perhaps the most widely-used option since it’s not too extreme or basic. This setting will allow Discord to scan photos sent from users not on your friends’ list.
    • I live on the edge: This option takes away all permission from Discord to scan images in DMs. Once you enable this option, you’re on your own. It is highly recommended that you don’t enable this option unless you feel like you’re safe on Discord. Users who are part of large organizations/servers on Discord and have this option enabled will be prone to spam and inappropriate messages.

You can navigate to “User Settings” to enable any of these options. This is the little gear icon found beside your Discord tag at the bottom left of your Discord homepage. From there, go to “Privacy & Safety” > “Safe Direct Messaging.”

    More privacy settings

You should know that you can’t send anyone on Discord a direct message unless you have them added as a friend. However, this also depends on the settings of the person you’re trying to message.

    • To change these settings, you can navigate to “User Settings.”
    • This is the little gear icon found beside your Discord tag at the bottom left of your Discord homepage.
    • From there, go to “Privacy & Safety.”
    • Scroll down to where it says “Who Can Add You As a Friend.”
    • Here, you will see three toggles: Everyone, Friends of Friends, and Server Members. By default, all of these will be enabled. Here is what they mean:

Everyone: This means that anyone and everyone on Discord will be able to DM you.

Friends of Friends: This means that friends of people you are mutual friends with can DM you on Discord.

Server Members: This means that anyone you share servers with can message you on Discord .
